ועתה ישראל מה ה' אלהיך שואל מעמך כי אם ליראה וגו' ולדבקה בו. פירוש, כמו השר אפילו הוא גדול שבכל שרי המלוכה, בעמדו לפני המלך הוא בעיניו כמו קטן, ואינו רוצה שיעשו לו שום כבוד מחמת גדלו ושררותו, כמו שעושים לו כשהוא בביתו בפני עצמו, כי אז עושים לו כבוד ובושים ויראים ממנו, אמנם כשהוא לפני המלך, הוא וכל מדותיו נתבטלו, מפני יראתו ובשתו מפני המלך, וזהו שאמר מה ה' אלהיך שואל מעמך, פירוש שתהיה במדרגת מה, על ידי ולדבקה בו: (כתר שם טוב ח"ב ד"ה ע"ג, לקוטי אמרים ד"ו ע"ד).
And now, Israel, what does the L‑rd your G‑d ask of you? Only to fear the L‑rd your G‑d… (ibid. 10:12) Even the greatest nobleman feels small when standing before the king. And certainly, he does not want to receive the honor that he gets in his house, where all are ashamed and afraid of his eminence and authority. For when he stands before the king, he is completely nullified in fear and shame. This is the meaning of “What – the L‑rd G‑d asks of you.” That is, He asks that you be on the level of “what,”12As Moses and Aharon said: “…and what are we?” (Exodus 16:7), indicating their great humility. and through this, “and to cling to Him” (ibid. 11:22).
