שמעתי מאא"ז זללה"ה, כי כל עליות של אדם אי אפשר להיות כי אם על ידי ראשי וצדיקי הדור, הן המדות של האדם, הן דיבורים שלו, הכל הצדיק יכול להעלות, ויש שני בחינות בזה, יש אנשים שהצדיק מעלה אותם בתורתו ותפלתו, ויש אנשים שאינו יכול להעלותן כי אם בשיחה שלו, על דרך שדרשו חכמינו ז"ל (סוכה דכ"א ע"ב) על פסוק (תהילים א׳:ג׳) ועלהו לא יבול אפילו שיחת חולין שלו יש בו צורך, אף שנראה שהם דברים בטלים, ובאמת הצדיק מעלה אותו על ידי דיבורים לו שמדבר עמו, וכן שמעתי מאא"ז זללה"ה, ולאו כל אדם זוכה לזה, כמו שאמר אא"ז זללה"ה על המשנה (כתובות די"ג ע"א) ראוה מדברת עם אחד ודי בזה: (דמ"א פ' מצורע).
I heard from my grandfathers [the Baal Shem Tov] that all the ascents of a person – whether of his character traits, or his speech – only occur through the leaders and Tzaddikim of generation. The Tzaddik is able to uplift everything. Now, there are two aspects to this. There are those people whom the Tzaddik uplifts through his Torah study and prayer. And there are those people whom the Tzaddik is only able to uplift through his mundane speech, as our Sages have said on the verse: “And their leaves will not wither (Psalms 1:…) – “Even the common talk of a Torah scholar is necessary.”1Sukkos 21b. Even though it seems to be empty words (devorim betalim). Really, the Tzaddik uplifts them with his words when he speaks with them. However, not every person is worthy of coming to this.
