הבעל שם טוב גילה שאף על פי שאדם מתפלל בדביקות גדול ואהבה ויראה כראוי, מכל מקום יזהר שיהיה לו הכנעה לפני השם יתברך כראוי גם כן, כי פעם אחד התפלל עם תלמידיו בדבקות גדול ולא היה להם הכנעה והיה קטרוג גדול מלמעלה, רק אחד היה מתפלל בהכנעה וניצולו על ידי זה: (דרכי צדק אות ה)
Even when you pray with great devekus, and with the proper love and fear [of G-d], you must also be careful to humble yourself before G-d, as well. Once, the Baal Shem Tov and his disciples prayed with great devekus. But because they lacked the proper humility, a great accusation was aroused [against them] Above.
