במדרש (תנחומא סו"פ וישב) אמר ריב"ל בא וראה שלא כמדת הקדוש ברוך הוא מדת בשר ודם, מדת בשר ודם מכה באיזמל ומרפא ברטיה, והקדוש ברוך הוא במה שהוא מכה הוא מרפא כו', נודע דברי הבעל שם טוב ז"ל על הפסוק (ירמיה ל') ועת צרה הוא ליעקב וממנה יושע כי מן הדינים בעצמם צומח ישועה: (בית ישראל זידיטשוב, בפ' ויצא).
And Joseph dreamed a dream. (Ibid. 37:5) Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi said: “Come and see. G-d’s traits are not like man’s traits. A human being inflicts with a knife and heals with a bandage. G-d, however, heals with the very thing with which He inflicts, as it says: ‘For I will restore to you your health, and I will heal you from your wounds”3The implication being that G-d heals with the wound itself. (Jeremiah 30:17). Joseph was sold because of a dream… and he ruled because of a dream.4Midrash Tanchuma, Vayeshev 9. On the verse: “It is a time of distress for Jacob, and from it he will be delivered” (Jeremiah 30:7), the Baal Shem Tov commented: From the Harsh Judgments themselves sprout forth the deliverance.
