אם הכהן המשיח יחטא לאשמת העם. משל שנשלח בן המלך מאביו ולא היה יכול להחזירו, עד שהוצרך שר אחד לפשוט בגדיו החשובים ולבש בגדי פחותי הערך כדי שיתחבר עם בן המלך שנעשה הדיוט מן פחותי הערך וכו':
If the anointed priest commits an [inadvertent] violation, bringing guilt to his people, the sacrifice for his violation shall be an unblemished young bull as a sin offering to G‑d. (ibid. 4:3) Once there was a king whose son was sent to a far away place, and his father was unable to bring him back. Finally, one of the ministers took off his royal raiment and dressed like a peasant in order to join the prince, who had himself become a peasant.

והנמשל הוא פשוט, בגדים החשובים הוא כינוי למעשים טובים, על דרך שאמר הכתוב (קהלת ט׳:ח׳) בכל עת יהיו בגדיך לבנים וכו', ובגדים פחותי הערך הם דוגמת בגדים הצואים ח"ו, ולא ממש בגדים צואים, והענין הוא כמו שכתוב (אשר נשיא יחטא) [אם הכהן המשיח יחטא] לאשמת העם, כי כל דור ודור ודורשיו הם שורש אחד, כמו משה רבינו עליו השלום עם דורו כן כל דור ודור לפי דורשיו והדורשין לפי הדור, כמו שאמרו בש"ס דערכין (די"ז ע"א), והכי נמי חטא הדור גורם אשמת ראש הדור, כגון כאילו, ששורש אחד להם, ואז כשיורד ראש הדור למדרגתן ולובש לבושי הדור, שהם בגדי פחותי הערך, ואז יש התחברות מה ביניהם כו', ומזה ילמדו גם כן דורות הבאים דרך גדול בעבודת השם יתברך, וזהו שזכרתי וקבלתי ממורי פה אל פה ואי אפשר לבאר בספר ודע והבן: (תוי"י פ' בהעלותך דקל"ז ע"ג אריכות גדול).
The meaning of the parable is obvious. The “raiment” is our good deeds, as the verse says: “At all times, may your garments be white” (Ecclesiastes 9:8). The “peasant’s garb” are like soiled garments, though they are not really. This is as is written: “If the anointed priest commits an [inadvertent] violation, bringing guilt to his people.” For the generation and its leaders share a single root, as was the case of Moses and his generation. Thus, the leaders are appropriate to the generation, and the generation appropriate to the leaders.10See Archin 17a. In this case, too, the sins of the people caused the leader of the generation to sin. But then, when the leader descends to their level and puts on the lowly garment of the generation, he finds a point that unites them.
