"This day we have seen that God speaks with a human being — and they live." (Deuteronomy 5:21) And after this it is written: "If we continue to hear… any more, we shall die."(Deuteronomy 5:22) Behold, the two verses apparently contradict and refute one another: they themselves said "that God speaks with a human being and they live," and then said, "if we continue… we shall die."
2
Let us preface by interpreting a verse in Tehillim: "I said: you are elohim, children of the Most High, all of you; yet like any human you shall die" (Psalms 82:6–7). For we have written many times that one who is a tzaddik is called ish Elohim — as it is written, "Moshe, the man of God" — because one who is a tzaddik is master of the dinim, and the dinim are in the tzaddik's hand, to be inclined wherever the tzaddik desires: to subdue them and to sweeten them. And the tzaddik is the judge — for judges are called elohim — and as the tzaddik judges and decrees below, so it is established; for when there is judgment below, there is no judgment above. Therefore through this the tzaddik can annul all the dinim from Israel, and all the decrees; and therefore one who is a tzaddik is called ish Elohim — meaning, master of Elohim. And this is what we say in the Gemara: "The Holy One decrees, and the tzaddik annuls, as it is said: You shall decree a word, and it shall be established for you" (Iyov 22:28). At first glance — how is it proved from here that the tzaddik annuls what the Holy One decrees? The plain sense of the verse is that when the tzaddik decrees, the Holy One fulfills! But by the words above it sits well: when the tzaddik judges below and decrees, there is no judgment above — and of themselves the decrees are annulled.
3
But this one must understand: whence does one who is a tzaddik have the power to heal the sick through prayer, and to draw down aliveness so that the person may live? For the tzaddik's own aliveness is not forever — it is, as it were, on loan — and how can what is borrowed give aliveness to another? The Blessed God, who lives and endures forever and to all eternities, whose aliveness is essential, can give aliveness to the human being whose aliveness is borrowed; but not so a human being, whose aliveness is not their own essence. Rather, it is nothing other than this: because the tzaddik cleaves to the Blessed God, the tzaddik's aliveness is found cleaving to the eternal, essential Life — and that aliveness becomes itself essential and eternal, for essence to Essence cleave together. And therefore there is power in the tzaddik's hand to draw aliveness to the sick. And if you should say: if so, let the tzaddik live and endure forever! — this is impossible, because the tzaddik is not always in devekut. At times the devekut is interrupted, for thus were the worlds created — מטי ולא מטי, touching and not-touching (Zohar I 16b; 65a): one who is a tzaddik must go always from rung to rung, and wishing to ascend to the higher, loftier rung, must first descend and return a little below, and afterward ascend to the rung above. And when the time arrives to go the way of all the earth, to the world of truth, and the devekut is interrupted — then the tzaddik goes, and is gathered in.And indeed, this was the desire and the will of the Omnipresent, blessed be He: that all of us be cleaving to God. And therefore Anochi and Lo yihyeh we heard from the mouth of the Gevurah — for Anochi is a positive commandment, and Lo yihyeh lecha a negative commandment, in Divinity — and they are words of devekut. Therefore the Blessed God spoke them to us directly, in order that we be cleaving to God — to the eternal Life.
4
And this is the interpretation of "I said: you are elohim" — that you be cleaving to God through the rung of Elohim, namely the negative commandment, Lo yihyeh lecha; "and children of the Most High" — namely the positive commandment, Anochi, which is supreme over all; and thus you are cleaving to the eternal Life. "Yet like any human you shall die" — that is: when you interrupt yourselves from the devekut.
5
And this is also the interpretation of "And you who cleave to the Lord your God are alive, all of you, today." The word hayom is superfluous. But by the above it is explained: you who cleave to the Lord — all of you, each and every one, through devekut in the Blessed God, in the eternal Life, is alive; but only "today" — that is, every single day one must return and cleave again, for it is impossible to be in devekut continuously.
6
And this is what Israel said: "This day we have seen that God speaks et ha-adam" — with the human being, as two speaking with one another: the Blessed God speaks and decrees, and the tzaddik decrees and annuls; even if death, God forbid, has been decreed upon a person, the tzaddik can draw aliveness to them. And if you say, as above — how can a human being, whose aliveness is not their own essence, give aliveness? — to this it said va-chai: through the devekut the tzaddik has in the Blessed God, in the eternal Life, that aliveness too is found essential. And they said "if we continue" — that is: what we heard from the mouth of the Gevurah, Anochi and Lo yihyeh lecha (Deut. 5:7; Ex. 20:3), the positive and negative commandments in Divinity — that is devekut, and we were well able to hear it, and live. But if we continue to hear the rest of the mitzvot from the Blessed God directly — this is impossible, that God speak with a human being and they live, except for the need of some matter: as God spoke with Moshe panim be-fanim, face to face, in order to speak to Israel. And were it not for this — "who of all flesh…" (Exodus 16:3) Therefore: "you draw near, and hear."
