Our troubles are by no means minor and we should not minimize them. But compare them to a single experience of God’s nearness. All suffering is then like nothing.
Suffering brings us closer to God. When we lose our health, who is taking it if not God? Therefore, we are nearer to Him. When we lose a child, who takes him if not God? If anything, these things bring us even closer to God. One is closest to Him in the World to Come (see “His Wisdom” #96).
אָמַר: אַחַר כָּל הַיִּסּוּרִים, אַף עַל פִּי כֵן הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ מֵטִיב עִמָּנוּ.
The Rebbe said: After all the suffering, God is still good to us.
רַק שֶׁאֵין אָנוּ רוֹצִים לְהַקְטִין אֶת הַיִּסּוּרִים. וְגַם בֶּאֱמֶת בְּוַדַּאי אֵינָם יִסּוּרִים קְטַנִּים, אֲבָל נֶגֶד דְּבֵקוּת אֶחָד לְהַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ מַה שֶּׁזּוֹכִין לְאֵיזֶה בְּחִינָה שֶׁל דְּבֵקוּת בְּמַחֲשָׁבָה אוֹ בִּבְחִינָה אַחֶרֶת. כָּל הַיִּסּוּרִים אֵינָם כְּלוּם נֶגֶד זֶה, וְעַל יָדָם בְּעַצְמָם מִתְקָרְבִים וּמִתְדַּבְּקִים אֵלָיו יִתְבָּרַךְ.

כִּי נוֹטְלִין מִמֶּנִּי הַבְּרִיאוּת גּוּפִי, מִי נוֹטֵל מִמֶּנִּי הַבְּרִיאוּת? הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ! אִם כֵּן אֲנִי נִדְבָּק בּוֹ יִתְבָּרַךְ. וְכֵן כְּשֶׁלּוֹקֵחַ ח"ו, אֵיזֶה בֵּן. מִי לוֹקֵחַ? הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ! אִם כֵּן אַדְּרַבָּא עַתָּה הוּא סָמוּךְ יוֹתֵר אֵלָיו יִתְבָּרַךְ, כִּי בָּעוֹלָם הַבָּא סְמוּכִין יוֹתֵר לְהַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ.
