לא יאמר אדם כשאוכל להתפלל בהתלהבות אתפלל ואם לאו לא אאנוס א"ע להתפלל כ"א אדרבא במשל המלך כשבא למלחמה משנה את בגדיו אותם שהם קרובים למלכות מכירים את המלך בתנועותיו ואותם שאין קרובים למלך רואים כשהם משמרים יותר באותו מקום מסתמא שם המלך כך הוא כשאינו יכול להתפלל משמרים את המלך שלא לגלות אותו לפניו ואם כן יחזק א"ע יותר כי הלא המלך בכאן ומסתתרין אותו בפניו:
A person should not say to himself, “When I am able to pray with passion I will do so, but if not, I will not force myself to pray with passion.” Rather, he should say the opposite! This is analogous to a King who comes to the battlefield in different clothing, so that he will not be recognized. Those who are close to the King recognize Him by his mannerisms. Those who are not close to the King do not recognize Him, but when they see that there is additional security in the place, they can assume that the King is there. It is the same way when you are unable to properly pray. It means that there is additional security around the King, blessed is He, so that He is not openly revealed to you. This being the case, strengthen yourself to a greater degree, for the King is surely here, but is being concealed from you.
