ואחר שאוכל מן המצה לוקח מן החזרת שהוא המרור וטובל בחרוסת ומברך לאכול מרור. ואל ישהנו בחרוסת פן יתבטל טעם המרור. ואוכל ממנו כזית הוא וכל אחד מן המסובין עמו בלא הסבה שאינו זכר לחירות אלא זכר לשעבוד שנאמ' בו וימררו את חייהם ועל כן אין צריך לאכלו דרך חירות.
After eating the matzah, one takes some of the chazeret, (a type of) maror, and dips it in the charoset,194Maimonides, Mishneh Torah Hilchot Chametz U’Matzah, 8:8 and recites, “To eat the maror.” One should not leave bitter herbs in the charoset too long since it will negate the taste of the maror. One should eat an olive's amount along with the others who are eating without leaning since it is not a symbol of freedom but a reminiscence of subjugation, as Scripture states, “They embittered their lives.” Therefore, one does not eat it in the manner of freedom.
