‹›
  1. 1

To not reveal the nakedness of a woman and the daughter of her daughter: To not reveal the nakedness of a woman and the daughter of her daughter. And we have already said that this prohibition is always with marriage to the first one (as a condition), as it is stated (Leviticus 18:17), “the daughter of her daughter you shall not take.” And the expression of taking is understood by us to be an expression of marriage.

  2. 2

From the laws of the commandment is that which they, may their memory be blessed, forbade — as a fence to this — only the daughter of her daughter of her daughter, and only the mother of the mother of the mother of his wife, and only the mother of the father of the mother of his wife. The general rule of the matter of the prohibition of a woman and her daughter or the daughter of her son or the daughter of her daughter is that the Torah forbids a man from marrying six relatives of his wife besides the sister: three above, which are her mother and her two grandmothers; and three below, which are her daughter, the daughter of her daughter and the daughter of her son. And the Sages also added six others upon them as a fence — four above and two below. As the matter is proper to be like this perforce — as the two grandmothers drag along four others as a fence for them, whereas it is impossible for the daughter of her son and the daughter of her daughter to have [anyone] besides the two corresponding to them as a fence. And there is nothing to add upon the mother and the daughter, as behold there are women below them and above them [already] forbidden from the Torah.

  3. 3

And this prohibition is practiced in every place and at all times. And [in the case of] one who transgresses it and volitionally laid [with] a woman and the daughter of her daughter — in the lifetime of the first — both of them are burned; but if the first one died, both of them are [punished] with excision. And if it was inadvertent, they bring a fixed sin-offering. And if he laid with the secondary [prohibitions], they would strike him with rabbinic lashes of rebellion.
