That a levirate wife not marry another until she is released: That every man of Israel is prevented from having intercourse with the levirate wife while she is still bound with the levirate husband. And about this was it stated (Deuteronomy 25:5), “the wife of the deceased shall not be married to a stranger outside the family; the levirate husband shall have intercourse with her.”
I will write what I have known about the roots of the commandment of levirate marriage in its positive commandment in this Order (Sefer HaChinukh 598). And there I will also write some of the laws of the commandment and its content, as is the custom of this book. And one who transgresses it and has intercourse with a levirate wife while she is bound to the levirate husband is liable for lashes. And the essence of this warning is upon men, but she is also included in the prohibition [such] that she should not go and get married to any man until she is released from the levirate husband. And it is possible that if she transgresses and has sexual relations while she is still bound to the levirate husband, that she is also [included] in the liability for lashes. (See Tur, Even HaEzer 173.)
