There was an area 2 cubits wide on all sides of the 24 cubit square described in the previous section. One cubit of this space was designated as the area where kohanim would walk. It was a totally empty area,1In contrast to the area beyond this square, where the horns were located. They obstructed the movement of the kohanim. to allow the kohanim to walk freely without being burnt or tripping over portions of the sacrificial animals or pieces of wood.
