    "וַיְבִאֵנִי אֶל אֻלָם הַבַּיִת וְגוֹ' וּבַמַּעֲלוֹת אֲשֶׁר יַעֲלוּ אֵלָיו" (יחזקאל מ, מח-מט). שָׁנִינוּ גַּבֵּי בַּיִת שֵׁנִי (מדות פ"ג מ"ו): בֵּין הָאוּלָם וְלַמִּזְבֵּחַ כ"ב אַמָּה, וּשְׁתֵּים עֶשְׂרֵה מַעֲלוֹת הָיוּ שָׁם, רוּם מַעֲלָה חֲצִי אַמָּה וְשִׁלְּחָהּ אַמָּה וְכוּ'. וְלָרַמְבַּ"ם גָּרְסִינַן חֲצִי אַמָּה כְּמוֹ שֶׁכָּתַבְנוּ סִימָן ב'. וְהִתְבָּאֵר בְּסִימָן כ"ו-כ"ז, כִּי בְּבֵית שֶׁלֶּעָתִיד מִן הַנִּרְאֶה שֶׁיֵּשׁ בֵּין הָאוּלָם לַמִּזְבֵּחַ ל"ד אַמָּה, עַיֵּן עָלָיו.

    “And He brought me to the Vestibule (the Ulam) of the House…. There were steps by which one ascended to it.”1Yechezkel 40:48-49. With regard to the Second Beis HaMikdash, the Mishnah teaches:2Middos 3:6. “There were 22 cubits between the Ulam and the Altar and there were twelve steps there. Each step was 1/2 a cubit high and one cubit wide.” Rambam had a different version of the text which stated that the steps were also 1/2 a cubit wide, as stated in sec. 2. As explained in sec. 26-27, it appears that in the Future Beis HaMikdash there will be 34 cubits between the Ulam and the Altar. Consult that section.
