Beur Eser Sefirot · Chapter 8

‹›
  1. 1

    8) And if the questioner should further ask: “Now you must answer me: when did these sefirot come into existence? If you answer that they came into being shortly before the creation of the world, then one must ask: why did He ordain their emanation at that time and not before? Can there be a change of intention in the Perfect One? And if you answer that they are primordial, then they would have been equal with Him. And if they all existed in a state of equality, what distinction could there be among them?”

  2. 2

Answer. Some of the sefirot existed potentially within Ein Sof before emerging into actuality, as in the case of the first sefirah, which is equivalent to them all. Some existed in an intelligible mode, having been emanated from of old, as in the case of the second sefirah, from which derives the Torah that preceded the creation of the world. Some exist in a perceptible mode, and some in a mode imprinted within nature, as in the case of those sefirot required for this world, which were emanated shortly before the creation of the world. Since the power of each is contained within the other, once the first two sefirot existed—as a hidden and intelligible emanated power—their existence was sufficient for the existence of the latter sefirot. This is as our Rabbis, of blessed memory, said: “Could the world not have been created by a single utterance?” Regarding your question, “Would they not then have been equal with Him?”, the answer is as follows. Although no analogy can properly be applied to Ein Sof, in order to bring the matter closer to your understanding, it may be compared to a lamp from which thousands upon thousands of lights are kindled. One shines more brightly than another, yet they are all equal in their relation to the first light; they all proceed from a single root. Nevertheless, the one must not be identified with the other. Nor may their precedence be compared with His precedence, for He surpasses them and their power is emanated from Him by virtue of the superiority of His precedence. No change comes into being within Him; rather, the power of emanation becomes manifest through the differentiation of their modes of existence. Therefore, one cannot say that a change of intention occurred within Him, even though nothing exists outside Him.
