R. Jose continued: ‘It is written, “But he said not, Where is the God my maker, who giveth songs in the night” (Job 35, 10). As already stated, when the north wind awakes at midnight, it strikes the wings of the cock, which looks to see what it is, and then for the sake of the honour of its Master calls aloud to the sons of men.
Then the faithful arise and give strength and power to the Community of Israel, and through this David and his sons inherit the kingdom for all generations.
But if the cock calls and men continue to sleep in their beds and do not rise, then it claps its wings and says, Woe to so-and-so who contemns his Master, who deserts his Master, and heeds not His honour!
When the day breaks a herald proclaims concerning him, “He did not say, Where is God my maker, who giveth songs in the night, so as to assist in those praises.” What is the meaning of “my Maker”? If a man rises in the middle of the night and engages in the chanting of the Law-for the true singing is only at night-when day comes the Holy One, blessed be He, and the Community of Israel adorn him with a thread of grace to keep him safe from all harm and shed light upon him among both upper and lower beings,
פָּתַח רִבִּי יוֹסֵי וְאָמַר, (איוב ל״ה:י׳) וְלא אָמַר אַיֵּה אֱלוֹהַּ עוֹשָׂי נוֹתֵן זְמִירוֹת בַּלָּיְלָה. תָּא חֲזִי, (שלח לך קע"א ע"ב) בְּשַׁעֲתָא דְּאִתְּעַר רוּחַ צָפוֹן, וְאִתְפְּלַג לֵילְיָא, הָא אוּקְמוּהָ, דְּשַׁלְהוֹבָא חַד נָפִיק, וּבָטַשׁ תְּחוֹת גַּדְפּוֹי דְּתַרְנְגוֹלָא, וְאָקִישׁ גַּדְפּוֹי וְקָארֵי. וְהַהוּא שַׁלְהוֹבָא בְּזִמְנָא דְּמָטֵי גַּבֵּיהּ, וְאִתְּעַר לָקֳבְלֵיהּ, אִסְתָּכֵי בֵּיהּ, וְאִזְדַּעְזָע וְקָארֵי, וְאִסְתְּכֵי וְאַשְׁגַּח בְּגִין יְקָרָא דְּמָארֵיהּ, לְמֶעְבַּד רְעוּתֵיהּ, וקָאֲרִי לוֹן לִבְנֵי נָשָׁא.

and they make him every day a new creature; hence the expression “my Maker” (osai, lit. makers),
והָא (לך לך צ"ד ע"א) אוּקְמוּהָ, א"ל ו"ה. א"ל: דָּא אַבְרָהָם. דִּכְתִּיב, בֵּיהּ, הָאֵל הַגָּדוֹל. ו' דָּא קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא. ה' דָּא כְּנֶסֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל. וְדָא הוּא אֱלוֹהַּ. וְאִינּוּן עַבְדִּין לֵיהּ לְבַּר נָשׁ, וּמְתַקְּנִין לֵיהּ בְּכָל יוֹמָא, וּבְגִין כָּךְ כְּתִיב, עוֹשָׂי, כְּמָה דְאַתְּ אָמֵר (תהילים קמ״ט:ב׳) יִשְׂמַח יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּעוֹשָׂיו. אָמַר רִבִּי יוֹסֵי, ודַּאי כַּךְ הוּא, וְכֹלָּא חַד מִלָּה.
