This prayer was composed by Rabbenu Gershom [the light of the exile].

גְּרוֹנִי נִחַר

My throat has become parched

זוֹעֵק חָמָס.

[from] crying out over injustice,

רְאוֹתִי רָשָׁע

when I see the evil one

נוֹתֵן קֹדֶשׁ לְמִרְמָס.

trample that which is holy.

שִׁוַּעְתִּי הוֹשִׁיעָה

I cried out: Help [us reach]

לְיוֹם נָקָם נִכְמָס.

the hidden¹I.e. for that day is known only to God. day of vengeance.

מֵעַי עַל־כֵּן אוֹחִילָה

My intestines, therefore, tremble

וְלִבִּי נָמָס:

and my heart melts.²‘My intestines … melts’ i.e. I am consumed by fear.

אָדוֹן אֶרֶץ קִדַּשְׁתָּ

Master! You have sanctified the land³I.e. the Land of Israel.

בְּעֶשֶׂר קְדֻשּׁוֹת.

with ten [levels of] holiness.

בְּתוֹכָהּ שָׁכַנְתָּ

Within her You dwelt

לְכַפָּרַת נְפָשׁוֹת.

for [so that we may merit] forgiveness.

גְּאוֹן עֻזְּךָ

[The place of] Your majestic power⁴I.e. the Temple.

כּוֹנְנוּ יָדֶיךָ הַקְּדוֹשׁוֹת.

was established by Your Holy Hands.

דָּשׁוּ בּוֹ שׁוּעָלִים

Foxes trampled there

וְנֶחְרַשׁ בְּמַחֲרָשׁוֹת:

and [the Temple] was plowed up by plows.

מֵעַי עַל־כֵּן אוֹחִילָה

My intestines, therefore, tremble

וְלִבִּי נָמָס:

and my heart melts.

הָעִיר כְּלִילַת יֹפִי

The city of perfect beauty,⁵I.e. Jerusalem.

קִרְיָה נֶאֱמָנָה.

the fortified city,

וּמְקוֹם בּוֹ מִתְכַּפְּרִים

and the place where sins are forgiven

אַחַת בַּשָּׁנָה.

once a year,⁶I.e. Yom Kippur.

זָעַמְתָּ וְאָנַפְתָּ עָלָיו

You have poured wrath and anger on it

זֶה כַּמֶּה שָׁנָה.

for so many years.

חֲרוֹן אַפְּךָ שָׁפַכְתָּ

Your anger You poured out,

וְלֹא־רִחַמְתָּ

and You have not yet taken pity

לְחֶנְנָהּ.

to reestablish it.

מֵעַי עַל־כֵּן אוֹחִילָה

My intestines, therefore, tremble

וְלִבִּי נָמָס:

and my heart melts.

טַבּוּר הָאָרֶץ

The hub of the world,⁵I.e. Jerusalem.

בִּקַּקְתָּ בִּלַּקְתָּ.

You have destroyed and emptied it.

יַעַר הַלְּבָנוֹן

The forest of Lebanon⁷‘לְבָנוֹן‘—a play on the word לָבָן—white, i.e. the place where we were cleansed by our sins—the Temple.

הִסַּקְתָּ הִדְלַקְתָּ.

You burned and ignited.

כַּבִּיר,

Great One!

יוֹשְׁבִים הוֹרַדְתָּ

The inhabitants You brought down

סִלַּקְתָּ.

[and] removed them.

לְקוּחֶיךָ

Those [i.e. the nation] that You took,

בְּיוֹם־אַף

on the day of anger

טָבַחְתָּ מָלַקְתָּ.

You slaughtered [in many ways].

מֵעַי עַל־כֵּן אוֹחִילָה

My intestines, therefore, tremble

וְלִבִּי נָמָס:

and my heart melts.

מֵאֶרֶץ חֶמְדָּה

From the delightful land

יָצְאוּ רְחוּמֶיךָ.

Your beloved left.

נוֹדְדִים בַּגּוֹלָה

They wander in exile,

וּמְהַלְּלִים שְׁמֶךָ.

they [nevertheless] praise Your Name.

שׂוֹנְאִים בְּלַחַץ

The enemies oppress

לְהוֹנוֹת עַמֶּךָ.

to cause pain to Your nation

עַם־יְהֹוָה אַתָּה

[by saying:] You are Adonoy’s nation,

וְגוֹלֶה מִמְּקוֹמֶךָ:

[yet] you are exiled from your place.

מֵעַי עַל־כֵּן אוֹחִילָה

My intestines, therefore, tremble

וְלִבִּי נָמָס:

and my heart melts.

פָּתוֹחַ נִפְתַּח פִּינוּ

We shall open our mouths

וּלְךָ נַצְדִּיק.

and we will justify You.⁸I.e. We will admit that You have dealt rightly with us.

צוּר עַל־כָּל־הַבָּא

Our Strength! [Despite] all that befalls us,

אַתָּה צַדִּיק.

You are righteous.

קָדוֹשׁ הַדִּין עִמְּךָ

Holy One! Justice is with You

לְמָסְרֵנוּ בְּיַד־מַדִּיק.

to give us over to the oppressor,

רוֹפֵשׂ בְּרֶגֶל

who tramples us with his foot,

וְחֹרֵק שֵׁן וּמַדִּיק:

grates his teeth and crushes us.

מֵעַי עַל־כֵּן אוֹחִילָה

My intestines, therefore, tremble

וְלִבִּי נָמָס:

and my heart melts.

שִׁחֲתוּ־דֶרֶךְ אָבוֹת,

Our fathers corrupted their ways,

עֲווֹנָם סְבֹל נִתְפַּסְנוּ.

and for their sins we were trapped to suffer

תַּחַת

for the reason that

כִּי מַעֲשֵׂימוֹ בְּיָדֵינוּ תָפַסְנוּ.

we held on to their deeds.⁹I.e. we continued in their ways.

גַּעַר מְלָאוּנוּ

[Because] we were filled with rebuke

נִגְעַלְנוּ נִמְאַסְנוּ.

we became repulsive and despicable,

רָעוֹת רַבּוֹת וְצָרוֹת

[so that] many evils and tribulations

לְהַמְצִיא נִקְנַסְנוּ:

were provided [for us] as our punishment.

מֵעַי עַל־כֵּן אוֹחִילָה

My intestines, therefore, tremble

וְלִבִּי נָמָס:

and my heart melts.

שׁוּב עָדֶיךָ אָדוֹן

To return to You, Master,

נִמְלַכְנוּ נִסְכַּמְנוּ.

we have consulted and agreed.

מְאֹד אַחֲרֵי שׁוּבֵנוּ

Upon returning

נֶחֱרַטְנוּ נִחַמְנוּ.

we have been greatly remorseful and contrite.

בְּרַחֲמֶיךָ חָנֵּנוּ

With Your mercy be gracious to us

כִּי כָלִינוּ תַּמְנוּ.

for we have been annihilated and finished.

יְרִיבֵינוּ אֶל־יְשְׂמְחוּ

Let our enemies not rejoice,

כִּי נָפַלְנוּ קַמְנוּ:

for despite that we have fallen we shall rise.

מֵעַי עַל־כֵּן אוֹחִילָה

My intestines, therefore, tremble

וְלִבִּי נָמָס:

and my heart melts.

הָשֵׁב שְׁבוּת זְרוּיִים

Return the captives who have been scattered

בְּאַשְׁמָה רַבָּה.

due to their great guilt.

וְקַבְּצֵם מִן הַגּוֹיִם

And gather them from amongst the nations

בִּיתֵרָה חִבָּה.

with an abundance of love.

דְּבָרְךָ יֵאָמֵן

Fulfill Your promise

שְׁלוּחֲךָ הַחוֹזֵה נִבָּא.

that Your messenger the prophet prophesied.

הָקֵם סֻכַּת דָּוִד

Establish the kingdom of David

הַנּוֹפֶלֶת וַחֲרֵבָה.

that is fallen and destroyed.

וְאָז מֵעַי יָגִילוּ

Then my intestines will exult

וְלִבִּי יִשְׂמַח:

and my heart will rejoice.

חֶסֶד נְעוּרִים זָכְרָה

Remember the kindness of our youth¹⁰I.e. Remember what You did for us when we first became Your nation.

וּבְרִית רִאשׁוֹנִים.

and the covenant with our early generations.

זְכוּת אָבוֹת תִּזְכֹּר

Remember the merit of our forefathers,

וְאַל־יֹאבְדוּ בָנִים.

[so that] the sons will not be destroyed.

קוֹמְמִיּוּת יֵלְכוּ

With pride they shall go

בִּבְכִי וּבְתַחֲנוּנִים.

with tears [of joy] and with prayers

מִצָּפוֹן וּמִיָּם

from north and south

וּמֵאֶרֶץ צְפוֹנִים.

and from the hidden lands.¹¹The lands to which the ten lost tribes were exiled.

וְאָז מֵעַי יָגִילוּ

Then my intestines will exult

וְלִבִּי יִשְׂמַח:

and my heart will rejoice.

וְעַתָּה בַּצַּר

Now in our oppression

פְּקַדְנוּךָ

we have remembered You,

בּוֹשִׁים וְנִכְלָמִים.

ashamed and humiliated.

אוֹמְרִים חָטָאנוּ

We declare: ‘We have sinned.’

סְלַח נָא נוֹאֲמִים.

‘Forgive us, please,’ we pronounce.

מִדַּת הַדִּין הֲפָךְ־נָא

Please convert ‘strict justice’

לְמִדַּת רַחֲמִים.

to ‘lenient justice.’

צִדְקָתֵנוּ הָאֵר

Bring our righteousness into the light

כְּאוֹר שִׁבְעַת יָמִים.

as bright as the seven days.¹²Of creation.

וְאָז מֵעַי יָגִילוּ

Then my intestines will exult

וְלִבִּי יִשְׂמַח:

and my heart will rejoice.

וַאֲנַֽחְנוּ לֺא נֵדַע מַה נַּעֲשֶׂה כִּי עָלֶֽיךָ עֵינֵֽינוּ: זְכֹר רַחֲמֶֽיךָ יְהֹוָה וַחֲסָדֶֽיךָ כִּי מֵעוֹלָם הֵֽמָּה: יְהִי חַסְדְּ֒ךָ יְהֹוָה עָלֵֽינוּ כַּאֲשֶׁר יִחַֽלְנוּ לָךְ: אַל תִּזְכָּר לָֽנוּ עֲוֹנוֹת רִאשׁוֹנִים מַהֵר יְקַדְּמֽוּנוּ רַחֲמֶֽיךָ כִּי דַלּֽוֹנוּ מְאֹד: חָנֵּֽנוּ יְהֹוָה חָנֵּֽנוּ כִּי־רַב שָׂבַֽעְנוּ בוּז: בְּרֺֽגֶז רַחֵם תִּזְכּוֹר: כִּי הוּא יָדַע יִצְרֵֽנוּ זָכוּר כִּי עָפָר אֲנָֽחְנוּ: עָזְרֵֽנוּ אֱלֺהֵי יִשְׁעֵֽנוּ עַל־דְּבַר כְּבוֹד־שְׁמֶֽךָ וְהַצִּילֵֽנוּ וְכַפֵּר עַל־חַטֹּאתֵֽינוּ לְמַֽעַן שְׁמֶֽךָ:

הש"ץ אומר קדיש שלם עם תתקבל

יִתְגַּדַּל וְיִתְקַדַּשׁ שְׁמֵהּ רַבָּא בְּעָלְמָא דִּי בְרָא כִרְעוּתֵהּ וְיַמְלִיךְ מַלְכוּתֵהּ בְּחַיֵּיכוֹן וּבְיוֹמֵיכוֹן וּבְחַיֵּי דְכָל בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל. בַּעֲגָלָא וּבִזְמַן קָרִיב וְאִמְרוּ אָמֵן:

יְהֵא שְׁמֵהּ רַבָּא מְבָרַךְ לְעָלַם וּלְעָלְמֵי עָלְמַיָּא: יִתְבָּרַךְ וְיִשְׁתַּבַּח וְיִתְפָּאַר וְיִתְרוֹמַם וְיִתְנַשֵּׂא וְיִתְהַדָּר וְיִתְעַלֶּה וְיִתְהַלָּל שְׁמֵהּ דְקֻדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא לְעֵֽלָּא מִן כָּל בִּרְכָתָא וְשִׁירָתָא. תֻּשְׁבְּחָתָא וְנֶחֱמָתָא. דַּאֲמִירָן בְּעָלְמָא וְאִמְרוּ אָמֵן:

תִּתְקַבֵּל צְלוֹתְהוֹן וּבָעוּתְהוֹן דְּכָל (בֵּית) יִשְׂרָאֵל קֳדָם אֲבוּהוֹן דִּי בִשְׁמַיָּא וְאִמְרוּ אָמֵן:

יְהֵא שְׁלָמָא רַבָּא מִן שְׁמַיָּא וְחַיִּים עָלֵֽינוּ וְעַל כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל וְאִמְרוּ אָמֵן:

עֹשֶׂה שָׁלוֹם בִּמְרוֹמָיו הוּא יַעֲשֶׂה שָׁלוֹם עָלֵֽינוּ וְעַל כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל וְאִמְרוּ אָמֵן:
