Selichot Nusach Lita Linear · Second Day of the Ten Days of Penitence, Chapter 7

‹›
  1. 1

Our God and God of our fathers!

  3. 3

How can I return to You through repentance

  4. 4

when those who worship other gods

  5. 5

don’t permit me to worship You?

  6. 6

They seek to separate me from You

  7. 7

and still I did not forsake Your precepts.

  8. 8

How was I able to go into exile

  9. 9

and go on every path and province

  10. 10

while the idol worshippers ruled over me

  11. 11

    with their laws that endured

  12. 12

    וּמַלְכָּם מוֹלֵךְ.

    and their king reigned for a long time;

  13. 13

while I have not been called

  14. 14

    to come to the king?

  15. 15

How were the rivers able to flow

  16. 16

from the dripping of my tears

  17. 17

while I was given over to evil doers?

  18. 18

    They and their children

  19. 19

shoot me with arrows from their quivers

  20. 20

while I am a choice sheep taken to slaughter.

  21. 21

How is it that the end of days is concealed

  22. 22

    and not known,

  23. 23

and my enemies who cut my glory

  24. 24

    are saved from death,

  25. 25

    considering themselves wise

  26. 26

like Haymon1See Rashi Kings I, 2:11, referring to Moses and the generation that left Egypt. and Darda

  27. 27

while I am foolish without wisdom.

  28. 28

How is it possible that the kingdom

  29. 29

of the Chosen People has been torn apart

  30. 30

    while their kingdom has endured—

  31. 31

    the kingdom of evildoers

  32. 32

    and they live with confidence,

  33. 33

    in joy and gladness

  34. 34

    and I reside in exile?

  35. 35

    The potion of poison—

  36. 36

how did I drink and swallow?

  37. 37

    I cried and shed tears

  38. 38

because of the oppressive yoke of Ishmael

  39. 39

while they mock me [and insist]

  40. 40

that I heed and harken what they say

  41. 41

and I remain like a deaf person

  42. 42

    and I do not hear.

  43. 43

How was my God able to smite me

  44. 44

while my previous wounds were still unhealed

  45. 45

and the cloak of my glory

  46. 46

    was donned by Edom

  47. 47

as they eat their sweet delicacies—

  48. 48

    milk and honey,

  49. 49

when I am like withered grass?

  50. 50

How did the nation of Kedar surround me

  51. 51

and Didan and Shva rule over me?

  52. 52

    They proclaim as a prophet

  53. 53

    a man who never prophecied

  54. 54

they provide strength for their kingdoms,

  55. 55

    troops and armies

  56. 56

and I, where shall I go?

  57. 57

How did You administer such suffering

  58. 58

commensurate with my sins and foolishness?

  59. 59

In the teeth of lions and lionesses

  60. 60

    was I consumed,

  61. 61

and they, young and old [were confident]

  62. 62

saying that they can overpower us.

  63. 63

As I was childless from previous suffering,

  64. 64

I became again childless from further suffering.

  65. 65

How did my stars become dark

  66. 66

    and my zodiac change

  67. 67

as the nations abominated my scrolls?

  68. 68

    They prevented my feet

  69. 69

from ascending to Jerusalem during festivals

  70. 70

and I virtually veered completely from God.

  71. 71

How did You heed my iniquities

  72. 72

    and scrutinize my guilt

  73. 73

but against those who battle my soul

  74. 74

    You did not defend me?

  75. 75

Even while they were in full strength

  76. 76

in inflicting pain and anguish upon me

  77. 77

and still I trusted in Your kindness

  78. 78

    and my heart therefore rejoiced.

  79. 79

    How did I sit alone

  80. 80

    and become cast astray

  81. 81

    and denigrated from my dignity?

  82. 82

    I wandered amongst the nations

  83. 83

while they ruled and were successful

  84. 84

    their kingdom endured

  85. 85

and I am childless and alone.

  86. 86

How have my mockers and denigraters

  87. 87

    so embarrassed me.

  88. 88

    צִלָּם אֶצְלָם לֹא־סָר מֵעֲלֵיהֶם.

    Their power has not deserted them;

  89. 89

    as they cried out

  90. 90

Aha! Aha! with words [of joy]

  91. 91

I was a disgrace with them.

  92. 92

How did I remain amongst them

  93. 93

    in worry and pain?

  94. 94

From the waves of anguish they pour on me

  95. 95

    וּמִמְּקוֹרָם שׁוֹאֵב

    and from their spring, do I draw;

  96. 96

while they rest and lay [secure]

  97. 97

as the raven and the wolf,

  98. 98

while I am oppressed and sore.

  99. 99

How is it that those who despise pureness,

  100. 100

    dwell in Zion?

  101. 101

Who would believe such a thing,

  102. 102

who would imagine this to be God’s will?

  103. 103

    While they are wealthy princes,

  104. 104

    having been given high positions,

  105. 105

    I remain impoverished and needy.

  106. 106

How do they live in my Palace [my Temple]

  107. 107

    and dwell there in dwellings

  108. 108

from above to below2The Temple mount to the Courtyard.

  109. 109

and from below to the middle?3From the Courtyard to the Temple.

  110. 110

While they have inherited a wealth of gold

  111. 111

    and precious coins,

  112. 112

I am crippled while awaiting more blows.

  113. 113

How is that my thoughts are confused

  114. 114

while they remain in Your thoughts?

  115. 115

Remember us and be mindful of us

  116. 116

    for deliverance from idol worshippers.

  117. 117

Let them be devoured and removed

  118. 118

from the Place of Your Dwelling,

  119. 119

and then through Your abundant kindness,

  120. 120

    I will enter Your House.

  121. 121

    Almighty! King!

  122. 122

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

  123. 123

    governs with kindness

  124. 124

forgives the iniquities of His people.

  125. 125

He removes their sins one by one,

  126. 126

    increasing forgiveness to sinners,

  127. 127

    and pardon to transgressors.

  128. 128

    Acting righteously

  129. 129

    עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ.

    with all who are of flesh and spirit;

  130. 130

    not according to their wickedness

  131. 131

    does He repay them.

  132. 132

    Almighty!

  133. 133

    You instructed us to recite

  134. 134

    שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

    the thirteen Divine attributes;

  135. 135

    remember unto us this day

  136. 136

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

  137. 137

    as You made them known

  138. 138

to the humble Moses of old,

  139. 139

    as it is written,

  140. 140

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

  141. 141

    and stood with him there,

  142. 142

    and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

  143. 143

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  144. 144

And Adonoy passed before him [Moses],

  145. 145

    and proclaimed:

  146. 146

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  147. 147

    Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  148. 148

    Slow to Anger,

  149. 149

and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.

  150. 150

    Keeper of kindness

  151. 151

    for thousands of generations,

  152. 152

    Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,

  153. 153

    וְחַטָּאָה

    and sin;

  154. 154

and Acquitter of those who repent.

  155. 155

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  156. 156

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  157. 157

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

  158. 158

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  159. 159

    “For You, my Master,

  160. 160

    are good and forgiving,

  161. 161

    and abounding in kindness

  162. 162

to all who call upon You.”

  163. 163

    God will remember His covenant

  164. 164

    with Abraham, with Isaac

  165. 165

    and with Jacob.

  166. 166

“I have sworn by Myself,” declares Adonoy,

  167. 167

    “That because you performed

  168. 168

    this deed

  169. 169

    and did not withhold

  170. 170

    your only son,

  171. 171

    I will bless you greatly

  172. 172

    and make your descendants numerous

  173. 173

as the stars of the sky

  174. 174

and as the sand on the seashore,

  175. 175

    and your descendants will inherit

  176. 176

    the gate of their enemies.

  177. 177

Through your children, will be blessed

  178. 178

all the nations of the world

  179. 179

    because you heeded my voice.”

  180. 180

As a father has compassion on his children

  181. 181

so do You have compassion on us, Adonoy.

  182. 182

    לַיהֹוָה הַיְשׁוּעָה,

    Deliverance is Adonoy’s;

  183. 183

upon Your people is Your blessing. Selah!

  184. 184

Adonoy of Hosts is with us,

  185. 185

a stronghold for us is the God of Jacob. Selah!

  186. 186

    Adonoy of Hosts!

  187. 187

fortunate is the man who trusts in You.

  188. 188

    יְהֹוָה הוֹשִֽׁיעָה,

    Adonoy, deliver us;

  189. 189

the King will answer us on the day we call.

  190. 190

“Please pardon the sins of this nation

  191. 191

    in accordance with the greatness

  192. 192

    חַסְדֶּֽךָ.

    of Your lovingkindness;

  193. 193

and as You forgave this people

  194. 194

from when it left Egypt until now.”

  195. 195

    And there it is said:

  196. 196

    “And Adonoy said,

  197. 197

I have pardoned [them] as you have asked.”

  198. 198

Incline Your ear, my God, and hear,

  199. 199

open Your eyes and behold our desolate places,

  200. 200

    וְהָעִיר אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלֶֽיהָ

    and the city which is called by Your Name;

  201. 201

for it is not on account of our righteousness

  202. 202

that we let fall our supplication before You,

  203. 203

but because of Your great mercy.

  204. 204

My Master, hear! My Master, pardon!

  205. 205

My Master, listen and take action,

  206. 206

    do not delay!

  207. 207

    For Your sake, my God,

  208. 208

    because Your Name is proclaimed

  209. 209

over Your city and over Your people.
