  1. 1

Our God and God of our fathers!

  3. 3

I longed for You, I hoped for You,

  4. 4

though I was in a distant land.

  5. 5

    בְּקִרְבִּי שְׁחַרְתִּיךָ,

    With all my heart, I seek You;

  6. 6

I call to You from the depths [of my being].

  7. 7

I am crushed with my longing for You

  8. 8

as a stag longs for springs of water.

  9. 9

I seek You and search for You

  10. 10

[even] on the streets and in the markets.

  11. 11

    Behold the time has come

  12. 12

for You to relieve the distressed

  13. 13

and do justice for the oppressed.

  14. 14

    זְמוֹרֵיהֶם שִׁחֲתוּ

    Their vineyards, they [the enemy] destroyed;

  15. 15

    וּבְקָקוּם בּוֹקְקִים.

    they have been plundered by the plunderers;

  16. 16

they have been robbed and oppressed

  17. 17

    by those who crushed them.

  18. 18

    טְפוּלֶיךָ

    Those who cling to You;

  19. 19

those in whom You took delight

  20. 20

    as with tender infants,

  21. 21

    have been for many days

  22. 22

    oppressed and battered.

  23. 23

    They lack everything,

  24. 24

they are destitute of [all] good.

  25. 25

Lions4This is a reference to our enemies who are likened to lions. gnash their teeth at them.

  26. 26

You have abhored, forsaken, and cast off

  27. 27

    those who cleave to You.

  28. 28

    You have annulled the covenant

  29. 29

with the three [Patriarchs] who You desired.

  30. 30

You have made us an object of repulsiveness.

  31. 31

    מֻכִּים וְלוֹקִים.

    We are whipped and beaten;

  32. 32

torn by maggots and devoured by locust.5This is a reference to our enemies who are likened to locust and maggots.

  33. 33

    We are wounded, bruised,

  34. 34

    וְאֵבָרִים מִתְפָּרְקִים.

    our limbs torn;

  35. 35

we lack balm, and we are without ointment.

  36. 36

    Arise! help those

  37. 37

    who sigh and groan.

  38. 38

    Lift them from the dunghill

  39. 39

and raise them from the dust.

  40. 40

The power is in Your hand

  41. 41

    to raise up the downtrodden.

  42. 42

Your might is in the heavens

  43. 43

and Your dominion is on earth.

  44. 44

The righteous will acknowledge Your Name

  45. 45

when You lift the head of those

  46. 46

who have been purified seven times.6Israel has been purified in the fires of suffering in exile.

  47. 47

    Then all [nations] will say,

  48. 48

    those near and far,

  49. 49

when You deliver those who yearn for You,

  50. 50

    those strengthened by Your mitzvos:

  51. 51

    “The Strong and Mighty One

  52. 52

    has fulfilled His promise

  53. 53

    to the rose of Sharon,

  54. 54

the lily of the valley [Israel].”

  55. 55

    Almighty! King!

  56. 56

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

  57. 57

    governs with kindness

  58. 58

forgives the iniquities of His people.

  59. 59

He removes their sins one by one,

  60. 60

    increasing forgiveness to sinners,

  61. 61

    and pardon to transgressors.

  62. 62

    Acting righteously

  63. 63

    עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ.

    with all who are of flesh and spirit;

  64. 64

    not according to their wickedness

  65. 65

    does He repay them.

  66. 66

    Almighty!

  67. 67

    You instructed us to recite

  68. 68

    שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

    the thirteen Divine attributes;

  69. 69

    remember unto us this day

  70. 70

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

  71. 71

    as You made them known

  72. 72

to the humble Moses of old,

  73. 73

    as it is written,

  74. 74

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

  75. 75

    and stood with him there,

  76. 76

    and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

  77. 77

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  78. 78

    וַיַּֽעֲבֹר יְהֹוָה עַל פָּנָיו

    And Adonoy passed before him [Moses];

  79. 79

    and proclaimed:

  80. 80

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  81. 81

    Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  82. 82

    Slow to Anger,

  83. 83

and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.

  84. 84

    Keeper of kindness

  85. 85

    for thousands of generations,

  86. 86

    Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,

  87. 87

    וְחַטָּאָה

    and sin;

  88. 88

and Acquitter of those who repent.”

  89. 89

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  90. 90

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  91. 91

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

  92. 92

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  93. 93

    “For You, my Master,

  94. 94

    are good and forgiving,

  95. 95

    and abounding in kindness

  96. 96

to all who call upon You.”
