אֱלֹהִים יְהֹוָה חֵילִי.

God, Adonoy, my power,

יוֹצְרִי וּמְחוֹלְלִי.

Creator, and Maker,

לְךָ אֲנִי וְכָל־אֲשֶׁר לִי:

I am Yours with all I own;

בְּסַאסְּאָה אַל תָּרִיב.

when judging do not be harsh

פֶּן תַּשְׁחִית וְתַחֲרִיב.

lest You destroy

נֶפֶשׁ כִּי תַקְרִיב:

the soul approaching [You].

גַּרְדֹּם לִדּוֹן.

In the dock to be judged,

רֵאשִׁית מָדוֹן.

the initial judgment is

אֵשׁ הִיא עַד אֲבַדּוֹן:

fire of destruction.

דְּרָכַי הִסְכַּנְתָּ.

You know my ways,

עֲלוּמַי לְאוֹר שַׁתָּה.

have brought to light my hidden sins;

אַל תִּהְיֶה לִי לִמְחִתָּה:

do not destroy me.

הֲלִיכוֹת לוֹ עוֹלָם.

You, Who know the world’s ways,

הֵן עַל־כָּל נֶעְלָם.

including all hidden acts—

אַל־יָשׁוֹב דַּךְ נִכְלָם:

do not send the poor away in shame.

וְכִי רַבּוּ מְשׁוּבוֹתַי.

Though my wildnesses are many,

לֵב הוּתַל בְּמַחְשְׁבוֹתַי

my mind misled me,

כִּי לֹא מַחְשְׁבוֹתַי:

for my intent was not [to sin].

זַמּוֹתִי הַכֹּל הֶבֶל.

I realize all is futility,

בְּכָל מַעֲשֵׂה תֵבֵל.

for every deed on earth

נֶפֶשׁ הוּא חוֹבֵל:

one’s soul is His assurance;

חוֹשֵׁב מַאֲוַיּוֹ לְסַפֵּק.

when man seeks to fill the desire,

קוֹל דּוֹדִי דוֹפֵק.

the voice of my Beloved warns,

זְמָמוֹ אַל תָּפֵק:

“Don’t carry out that evil.”

טָהוֹר יְצִירְךָ עֲשִׂיתוֹ.

You made Your creature undefiled,

וְרֹעַ לֵב מְסִיתוֹ.

heart’s evil misleads him;

כִּי תִרְאֶה עָווֹן וְכִסִּיתוֹ:

so when You see sin cover it.

יְשׁוּעָתְךָ לְנַפְשִׁי אֱמֹר.

Tell my soul about Your salvation,

הַאִם תַּמְנוּ לִגְמֹר.

for we are hopelessly finished

אִם עֲווֹנוֹת תִּשְׁמֹר:

if You keep track of our sins.

כָּלוּ בַהֶבֶל יָמַי.

My years are wasted on futility

וּמִכֹּבֶד אֲשָׁמַי.

the seriousness of my guilt

נִבְהֲלוּ עֲצָמָי:

has terrified my bones.

לַבֵּן אֲדַמְדָּם.

Cleanse their redness,

הַמְאֻחָר וְהַמֻּקְדָּם.

the recent and the past,

יֵצֶר לֵב הָאָדָם:

the inclinations of man’s mind.

מִשַּׁשְׁתָּ אֶת כֹּל

You’ve searched all the chambers

חַדְרֵי לֵב עָקֹל.

of my crooked heart;

מַה־מָּצָאתָ

what have You found in me

מִכֹּל נֹעַם חֶפְצְךָ בִּי.

of all You consider proper?

טָמוּן עָווֹן בְּחֻבִּי.

Sin is hidden within me,

חַם לִבִּי בְּקִרְבִּי:

my heart hot inside me.

סְמֹךְ נַפְשִׁי מִפַּחַת.

Keep my soul from destruction;

וּמַה בֶּצַע לָקַחַת.

what will You gain

בְּרִדְתִּי אֶל־שַׁחַת:

if I go to the grave?

עָלַי בְּרַחֲמִים שׁוּב.

In mercy turn to me,

כִּי בַמֶּה חָשׁוּב.

for what worth has a soul

רוּחַ הוֹלֵךְ וְלֹא יָשׁוּב:

that goes and does not return?

פְּצָעַי לְפִי פְּשָׁעַי.

My wounds match my sins,

וְשַׂק וָאֵפֶר מַצָּעַי.

sack and ash are my bed;

עַל־כֵּן הָמוּ מֵעַי:

my innards are in turmoil.

צוּקוֹת עִם צָרוֹת.

Anguish and troubles

אֲשֶׁר הֵנָּה חוֹבְרוֹת.

come so thick

לֹא יָדַעְתִּי סְפוֹרוֹת:

I cannot count them.

קְשֵׁה רוּחַ אָנִי.

I am bitter;

הֲלֹא תִרְאֶה בָּעֳנִי.

won’t You consider my suffering

כִּי תְבַקֵּשׁ לַעֲווֹנִי:

when You examine my sin?

רַחֲשִׁי לְךָ יֶעֱרַב.

May my prayer please You,

וּלְפָנֶיךָ תִּקְרַב.

be accepted by You,

וְנִקֵּיתִי מִפֶּשַׁע רָב:

that I be cleansed from great sin.

שָׁבֵי פֶשַׁע תְּנַקֶּה.

Cleanse from sin the repentant

בְּלֵב נִשְׁבָּר וְנִדְכֶּה.

with broken, oppressed heart;

וְאִם יִתְמַהְמַהּ חַכֵּה:

if he tarries, wait.

תְּשׁוּבָתוֹ תְּצַפֶּה.

Look forward to his penance,

וְעַל חֲטָאָיו תְּחַפֶּה.

cover his errors,

לְשָׂטָן בַּסֵּתֶר יִכְפֶּה:

and bend Satan secretly.

אֵל עָווֹן־וְחֵטְא נוֹשֵׂא.

Almighty Who bears iniquity and error;

אִם פָּשֹׂה יִפְשֶׂה.

should they increase,

וְעָשִׂיתָ לוֹ מִכְסֶה:

conceal them.

פְּדֵנוּ מֵעֲבֹר בַּשֶּׁלַח.

Redeem us from being put to the sword.¹The sword of the Angel of Death.

לְפָנֶיךָ תְּפִלָּתִי תִצְלַח.

Let my prayer succeed before You,

אֵל טוֹב וְסַלָּח:

good and forgiving Almighty.

רֹן תְּפִלָּתִי תִּשַׁע.

Heed my prayer,

וּמְחֵה כָעָב פֶּשַׁע.

and wipe away sin like a cloud,

כִּי לֹא אֵל חָפֵץ רֶשַׁע:

for You, Almighty do not want evil.

יִגְמְלֵנִי יְהֹוָה

Adonoy will compensate me

כְּצִדְקוֹ.

according to His righteousness,

תָּמִיד יִצְפְּנֵנִי בְּסֻכּוֹ.

He will always hide me in His shelter—

הָאֵל תָּמִים דַּרְכּוֹ:

the Almighty whose way is perfect.

מֵעֹמֶק בּוֹר קְרָאתִיךָ.

From the depths of the pit do I call You,

מִכְּאֵב לֵב שִׁחַרְתִּיךָ.

I pray to You with a pained heart,

כִּי זָכוֹר זְכַרְתִּיךָ:

for I always recall You.

בְּרַחֲמֶיךָ תִּלְבֹּשׁ.

Be clothed in mercy

וְאֶת חֲטָאַי תִּכְבֹּשׁ.

and set aside my errors,

וְאֵדַע כִּי לֹא־אֵבוֹשׁ:

so that I need no longer be ashamed.

רַבִּים אוֹמְרִים לְנַפְשִׁי.

Many say to me,

בָּאֵפֶר הִתְפַּלְּשִׁי.

“Wallow in dust

וְלֹא תֵצֵא חָפְשִׁי:

and you still won’t be freed.”

יֶהֱמוּ הֲמוֹן מֵעֶיךָ.

May Your innards show mercy;

זְכֹר חֶסֶד יוֹדְעֶיךָ.

recall the kindliness of Your intimates;²Our forefathers.

וְלִי מַה־יָּקְרוּ רֵעֶיךָ:

[as You have said:] how valuable to Me are your friends.

צֵא עַל־אוֹיְבֶיךָ כְּגִבּוֹר.

Attack Your enemies heroically,

זְרוֹעַ רוֹדְפַי תִּשְׁבֹּר.

break the power of my enemies

כִּי שָׂמוּ אוֹתִי בַּבּוֹר:

who put me into the pit.

חִצֶּיךָ בָּהֶם תְכַלֶּה.

Use up Your arrows against them,

אֲסִירֶיךָ מֵהֶם תַּעֲלֶה.

release Your prisoners from them.

וְיִהְיוּ דְבָרַי אֵלֶּה

And may these words of mine

קְרוֹבִים וַעֲרֵבִים.

be accepted pleasantly,

אֲהוּבִים וַחֲבִיבִים.

beloved and cherished,

יְהֹוָה צְבָאוֹת

Adonoy of Hosts

יוֹשֵׁב הַכְּרוּבִים:

Who dwells between the cherubim.

אֵל מֶֽלֶךְ.

Almighty! King!

יוֹשֵׁב עַל כִּסֵּא רַחֲמִים.

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

מִתְנַהֵג בַּחֲסִידוּת.

governs with kindness

מוֹחֵל עֲו‍ֹנוֹת עַמּוֹ.

forgives the iniquities of His people.

מַעֲבִיר רִאשׁוֹן רִאשׁוֹן.

He removes their sins one by one,

מַרְבֶּה מְחִילָה לְחַטָּאִים

increasing forgiveness to sinners,

וּסְלִיחָה לְפוֹשְׁעִים.

and pardon to transgressors.

עוֹשֶׂה צְדָקוֹת

Acting righteously

עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ.

with all who are of flesh and spirit;

לֹא כְרָעָתָם

not according to their wickedness

תִּגְמוֹל:

does He repay them.

אֵל

Almighty!

הוֹרֵיתָ לָנוּ לוֹמַר

You instructed us to recite

שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

the thirteen Divine attributes;

וּזְכָר לָֽנוּ הַיּוֹם

remember unto us this day

בְּרִית שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

כְּמוֹ שֶׁהוֹדַֽעְתָּ

as You made them known

לֶעָנָו מִקֶּֽדֶם.

to the humble Moses of old,

כְּמוֹ שֶׁכָּתוּב

as it is written,

וַיֵּרֶד יְהֹוָה בֶּֽעָנָן

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

וַיִּתְיַצֵּב עִמּוֹ שָׁם

and stood with him there,

וַיִּקְרָא בְשֵׁם יְהֹוָה:

and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

קהל וחזן:

Congregation and Chazzan:

וַיַּֽעֲבֹר יְהֹוָה עַל פָּנָיו

And Adonoy passed before him [Moses],

וַיִּקְרָא:

and proclaimed:

יְהֹוָה יְהֹוָה

Adonoy, Adonoy,

אֵל רַחוּם וְחַנּוּן

Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

אֶֽרֶךְ אַפַּֽיִם

Slow to Anger,

וְרַב חֶֽסֶד וֶֽאֱמֶת:

and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.

נֹצֵר חֶֽסֶד

Keeper of kindness

לָאֲלָפִים

for thousands of generations,

נֹשֵׂא עָו‍ֹן וָפֶֽשַׁע

Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,

וְחַטָּאָה

and sin;

וְנַקֵּה:

and Acquitter of those who repent.

וְסָלַחְתָּ לַעֲו‍ֹנֵֽנוּ וּלְחַטָּאתֵֽנוּ

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

וּנְחַלְתָּֽנוּ:

and take us for Your inheritance.”

סְלַח לָֽנוּ אָבִֽינוּ כִּי חָטָֽאנוּ.

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

מְחַל לָֽנוּ מַלְכֵּֽנוּ כִּי פָשָֽׁעְנוּ:

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

כִּי אַתָּה אֲדֹנָי

“For You, my Master,

טוֹב וְסַלָּח

are good and forgiving,

וְרַב חֶֽסֶד

and abounding in kindness

לְכָל קֹרְאֶֽיךָ:

to all who call upon You.”

יֹאחֵז צַדִּיק דַּרְכּוֹ

Let the righteous hold to his way,

וּטֳהָר־יָדַיִם יֹסִיף אֹמֶץ׃

and the pure of hands gather strength.

חִזְקוּ וְיַאֲמֵץ לְבַבְכֶם

Let your hearts be strong and with courage

כָּל־הַמְיַחֲלִים לַיהוָה׃

all who hope in Adonoy[‘s redemption]

בַּצַּר־לָנוּ נִקְרָא יְהוָה

In our affliction we call to Adonoy,

וְאֶל־אֱלֹהֵינוּ נְשַׁוֵּעַ

and to our God, we cry,

וְיִשְׁמַע מֵהֵיכָלוֹ קוֹלֵינוּ

and from His Sanctuary, He hears our voice,

וְשַׁוְעָתֵנוּ לְפָנָיו תָּבוֹא׃

and our cry is before Him.

עֲנֵנֵוּ יְהוָה

Answer us, Adonoy,

כִּי־טוֹב חַסְדֶּךָ

for Your kindness is good;

כְּרֹב רַחֲמֶיךָ פְּנֵה אֵלֵינוּ׃

in Your abundant mercy, turn to us.

כְּרַחֵם אָב עַל בָּנִים

As a father has compassion on his children

כֵּן תְּרַחֵם יְהֹוָה עָלֵֽינוּ:

so do You have compassion on us, Adonoy.

לַיהֹוָה הַיְשׁוּעָה,

Deliverance is Adonoy’s;

עַל עַמְּךָ בִרְכָתֶֽךָ סֶּֽלָה:

upon Your people is Your blessing. Selah!

יְהֹוָה צְבָאוֹת עִמָּֽנוּ

Adonoy of Hosts is with us,

מִשְׂגָּב לָֽנוּ, אֱלֹהֵי יַעֲקֹב סֶֽלָה:

a stronghold for us is the God of Jacob. Selah!

יְהֹוָה צְבָאוֹת,

Adonoy of Hosts!

אַשְׁרֵי אָדָם בֹּֽטֵֽחַ בָּךְ:

fortunate is the man who trusts in You.

יְהֹוָה הוֹשִֽׁיעָה,

Adonoy, deliver us;

הַמֶּֽלֶךְ יַעֲנֵֽנוּ בְיוֹם קָרְאֵנוּ:

the King will answer us on the day we call.

סְלַח נָא לַעֲו‍ֹן הָעָם הַזֶּה,

“Please pardon the sins of this nation

כְּגֹֽדֶל

in accordance with the greatness

חַסְדֶּֽךָ.

of Your lovingkindness;

וְכַאֲשֶׁר נָשָֽׂאתָה לָעָם הַזֶּה.

and as You forgave this people

מִמִּצְרַֽיִם וְעַד הֵֽנָּה.

from when it left Egypt until now.”

וְשָׁם נֶאֱמַר:

And there it is said:

וַיֹּאמֶר יְהֹוָה

“And Adonoy said,

סָלַֽחְתִּי כִּדְבָרֶֽךָ:

I have pardoned [them] as you have asked.”

הַטֵּה אֱלֹהַי אָזְנְךָ וּשְׁמָע,

Incline Your ear, my God, and hear,

פְּקַח עֵינֶֽיךָ וּרְאֵה שֹׁמְמֹתֵֽינוּ,

open Your eyes and behold our desolate places,

וְהָעִיר אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלֶֽיהָ

and the city which is called by Your Name;

כִּי לֹא עַל צִדְקֹתֵֽינוּ,

for it is not on account of our righteousness

אֲנַֽחְנוּ מַפִּילִים תַּחֲנוּנֵֽינוּ לְפָנֶֽיךָ,

that we let fall our supplication before You,

כִּי עַל רַחֲמֶֽיךָ הָרַבִּים:

but because of Your great mercy.

אֲדֹנָי שְׁמָֽעָה, אֲדֹנָי סְלָֽחָה,

My Master, hear! My Master, pardon!

אֲדֹנָי הַקְשִֽׁיבָה וַעֲשֵׂה,

My Master, listen and take action,

אַל תְּאַחַר.

do not delay!

לְמַעַנְךָ אֱלֹהַי,

For Your sake, my God,

כִּי שִׁמְךָ נִקְרָא

because Your Name is proclaimed

עַל עִירְךָ וְעַל עַמֶּֽךָ:

over Your city and over Your people.
