‹›
  1. 1

The following prayer was composed by Rabbi Solomon ben Isaac (Rashi).

  2. 2

    Adonoy, God of Hosts,

  3. 3

Who is feared by the heavenly angels,

  4. 4

You said, “Repent you stubborn children,

  5. 5

come to Me with thanksgiving and praise,

  6. 6

    seek My Presence

  7. 7

    with tears and supplications.

  8. 8

    Though the doors are closed

  9. 9

    to expressions of prayer,

  10. 10

the gates are open to the penitent—

  11. 11

    even the windows,

  12. 12

    דְּבָרְךָ נִצָּב לְעוֹלְמֵי עִדָּנִים.

    Your words stand firm for all time;

  13. 13

    Your ways of goodness

  14. 14

    are forever unchangeable.

  15. 15

    Behold, we come before You

  16. 16

    like the poor and needy,

  17. 17

    the righteousness is Yours,

  18. 18

    and the iniquity is ours,

  19. 19

we return to You with shameful faces,

  20. 20

and at Your gates we moan like doves.

  21. 21

Remember us for a [good] proper life,

  22. 22

    cleanse our stains

  23. 23

that they be pure and white,

  24. 24

erase the sins of our youth,

  25. 25

    כַּעֲנָנִים.

    let them vanish like clouds;

  26. 26

renew our days as the days of old.1Before we sinned.

  27. 27

    Remove [our] defilement

  28. 28

    and abolish [our] presumptuous sins,

  29. 29

    cleanse [us]

  30. 30

sprinkle upon us the faithful [pure] waters.

  31. 31

    We know our wickedness,

  32. 32

we are rebellious and as evil as thorns,

  33. 33

our necks are as stiff as oaks.

  34. 34

    The vineyard of our planting,

  35. 35

    is overgrown with weeds [sins]

  36. 36

it is covered with nettles and thorns [evil]

  37. 37

    accustomed to doing evil,

  38. 38

    clinging to sun-deities,

  39. 39

    taking bribes, pursuing pay-offs.

  40. 40

    We have quickly profaned

  41. 41

the wedding-canopy2The giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai is compared to a wedding canopy.

  42. 42

since then we have been thrust backward

  43. 43

    and not forward,

  44. 44

gone are the sacrifices of choice rams,

  45. 45

    the fragrance of the incense-offerings.

  46. 46

Gone are the captain(s) of fifty,

  47. 47

the advisor(s), the man (men) of honor,

  48. 48

    the deputy [High Priest],

  49. 49

the Annointed [High Priest], the Levites,

  50. 50

and the Aaronites [sons of Aaron].

  51. 51

Behold! we stand impoverished and empty

  52. 52

grieved in spirit, bitter as wormwood.

  53. 53

We remember You in our distress

  54. 54

    with an outpouring of prayers,

  55. 55

    in fear of Your judgement,

  56. 56

    דּוֹאֲגִים וּמִתְאוֹנְנִים:

    we worry and groan;

  57. 57

    צֶמַח־צְדָקָה הַצְמַח

    let righteousness spring forth

  58. 58

    for the faithful,

  59. 59

Order the removal of our early iniquities.

  60. 60

Let the voice [of our prayer] that calls,

  61. 61

put an end to those who contend with us,

  62. 62

    קַטֵּגוֹר יַהַס

    let it hush the accuser

  63. 63

    and silence the antagonists.

  64. 64

    Let our humble spirit,

  65. 65

    our subdued and broken hearts,

  66. 66

    be as acceptable to You

  67. 67

as the fat of the sacrifice.

  68. 68

The oath You swore to the Patriarchs—

  69. 69

    fulfill unto their children,

  70. 70

    the cry of Your callers

  71. 71

    תִּשְׁמַע מִמְּעוֹנִים:

    hear from heaven;

  72. 72

prepare their hearts to fear You,

  73. 73

    may Your ear be attentive

  74. 74

to the words of their supplication.

  75. 75

    Return to raise Your people

  76. 76

    from destruction,

  77. 77

    מַהֵר יְקַדְּמוּנוּ

    let come swiftly to us

  78. 78

    Your former mercy,

  79. 79

    in their judgement,

  80. 80

let Your favored ones be found innocent.

  81. 81

    They hope for Your lovingkindness,

  82. 82

    and depend on Your compassion.

  83. 83

    For in Your abundant mercy

  84. 84

    we trust,

  85. 85

and on Your righteousness, we rely,

  86. 86

and for Your pardon, we hope,

  87. 87

and for Your deliverance, we yearn.

  88. 88

    You are a King

  89. 89

Who loves righteousness from of old,

  90. 90

Who passes over the iniquities of His people,

  91. 91

and removes the sins of those who fear Him.

  92. 92

You made a covenant with the Patriarchs,

  93. 93

    and will keep [Your] oath

  94. 94

    with their descendants.

  95. 95

    You are He Who descended

  96. 96

in the cloud of Your glory, on Mount Sinai,

  97. 97

and disclosed the ways of Your goodness

  98. 98

    to Moses, Your servant.

  99. 99

    The ways of Your kindliness,

  100. 100

    גִּלִּיתָ לוֹ,

    You revealed to him;

  101. 101

and You made known to him

  102. 102

that You are Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  103. 103

Slow to anger, Abounding in kindness,

  104. 104

    and full of beneficence,

  105. 105

    guiding the entire world

  106. 106

    with the quality of mercy.

  107. 107

    And so it is written:

  108. 108

    “And He said:

  109. 109

    ‘I will cause to pass

  110. 110

    all My goodness before you,

  111. 111

and I will proclaim the Name, Adonoy

  112. 112

    לְפָנֶיךָ.

    in your presence;

  113. 113

    I will be gracious

  114. 114

to whom I will be gracious,

  115. 115

    and I will be compassionate

  116. 116

to whom I will be compassionate.’”

  117. 117

You are Almighty, Slow to Anger,

  118. 118

Lord of Mercy, You are called,

  119. 119

and the way of repentance, You have taught us.

  120. 120

The greatness of Your mercy and kindliness,

  121. 121

remember this day and every day

  122. 122

for the descendants of Your loved ones.

  123. 123

    Turn to us with compassion

  124. 124

for You are the Lord of Mercy.

  125. 125

    With supplication and prayer

  126. 126

    we approach Your Presence,

  127. 127

    as You made known

  128. 128

to [Moses,] the modest one of old.

  129. 129

    From Your fierce anger turn,

  130. 130

as it is written in Your Torah.

  131. 131

In the shadow of Your wings,

  132. 132

may we be sheltered and lodged,

  133. 133

as on the day [of which it is said:]

  134. 134

“When Adonoy descended in the cloud.”

  135. 135

    Remove [our] transgression,

  136. 136

    and blot out [our] iniquity,

  137. 137

as on the day [of which it is said:]

  138. 138

“And He stood with him there.”

  139. 139

    Give ear to our cry

  140. 140

    and listen to our speech,

  141. 141

as on the day [of which it is said:]

  142. 142

“And He proclaimed the Name, Adonoy”

  143. 143

    And there it is said:

  144. 144

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  145. 145

“And Adonoy passed before him [Moses]

  146. 146

    and proclaimed:

  147. 147

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  148. 148

    Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  149. 149

    Slow to Anger,

  150. 150

and Abundant in Kindness and Truth.

  151. 151

    Keeper of kindness

  152. 152

    for thousands of generations,

  153. 153

    Endurer of iniquity and transgression,

  154. 154

    and sin,

  155. 155

And Acquitter of those who repent.”

  156. 156

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  157. 157

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  158. 158

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

  159. 159

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  160. 160

    For You, my Master,

  161. 161

    are good and forgiving,

  162. 162

    and abounding in kindness

  163. 163

to all who call upon You.

  164. 164

Do not enter into judgment with us,

  165. 165

for no living soul will be justified before You.

  166. 166

Seek Adonoy when He is accessible,

  167. 167

call Him when He is near.

  168. 168

Adonoy is near to all who call upon Him,

  169. 169

to all who call upon Him in truth.

  170. 170

Adonoy is close to the broken-hearted,

  171. 171

and those crushed in spirit, He delivers.

  172. 172

For what nation is there so great

  173. 173

that has God so near unto them,

  174. 174

    as Adonoy, our God

  175. 175

in all that we call upon Him?

  176. 176

For Your sake, our God, act!

  177. 177

    and not for our sake.

  178. 178

See how we stand impoverished and empty.

  179. 179

As a father has compassion on his children

  180. 180

so do You have compassion on us, Adonoy.

  181. 181

    לַיהֹוָה הַיְשׁוּעָה,

    Deliverance is Adonoy’s;

  182. 182

upon Your people is Your blessing. Selah!

  183. 183

Adonoy of Hosts is with us,

  184. 184

a stronghold for us is the God of Jacob. Selah!

  185. 185

    Adonoy of Hosts!

  186. 186

fortunate is the man who trusts in You.

  187. 187

    Adonoy, deliver us!

  188. 188

the King will answer us on the day we call.

  189. 189

The Chazzan repeats after the congregation:

  190. 190

“Please pardon the sins of this nation

  191. 191

    in accordance with the greatness

  192. 192

    חַסְדֶּֽךָ.

    of Your lovingkindness;

  193. 193

and as You forgave this people

  194. 194

from when it left Egypt until now.”

  195. 195

    And there it is said:

  196. 196

    The Congregation says:

  197. 197

    “And Adonoy said,

  198. 198

I have pardoned [them] as you have asked.”

  199. 199

Incline Your ear, my God, and hear,

  200. 200

open Your eyes and behold our desolate places,

  201. 201

    וְהָעִיר אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלֶֽיהָ

    and the city which is called by Your Name;

  202. 202

for it is not on account of our righteousness

  203. 203

that we let fall our supplication before You,

  204. 204

but because of Your great mercy.

  205. 205

My Master, hear! My Master, pardon!

  206. 206

My Master, listen and take action,

  207. 207

    do not delay!

  208. 208

    For Your sake, my God,

  209. 209

    because Your Name is proclaimed

  210. 210

over Your city and over Your people.
