  2. 2

One King will rule [all] the nations,

  3. 3

He [God] will raise my banner,1Of redemption.

  4. 4

He will cause those appointed to tax me

  5. 5

    to seek my peace,

  6. 6

and my oppressors to deal righteously.

  7. 7

I will make it known to him

  8. 8

when I say, “Where is God Who made me?”

  9. 9

I say, “My deeds are in honor of the King.”

  10. 10

The King will call to judgement

  11. 11

His people Israel [on Rosh Hashana],

  12. 12

therefore, I hasten to flee [from evil]

  13. 13

[and seek] the Presence of the Almighty.

  14. 14

I and my young men will fast,

  15. 15

    and plead with supplications,

  16. 16

and thus will I go into the King.

  17. 17

The King is greater than all gods,

  18. 18

He is the possessor of heaven and earth,

  19. 19

    around those who fear Him,

  20. 20

    מַלְאָךְ יְהֹוָה חוֹנֶה.

    the angel of Adonoy encamps;

  21. 21

Angels of mercy! Please entreat Him

  22. 22

Who appeared in the [burning] bush,

  23. 23

    and also you angels

  24. 24

who serve in the Presence of the King.

  25. 25

    O King! Leave out nothing

  26. 26

    that You have promised:

  27. 27

to repair the breaches of the house,2The House of Israel.

  28. 28

to remove the stones from Your vineyard3Remove the sins, the stumbling blocks from Israel.

  29. 29

    וּלְעַזֵּק.

    and to erect a fence around it;

  30. 30

strengthen the advocate and silence the accuser,

  31. 31

so that he does no damage,

  32. 32

    for the adversary

  33. 33

is not worthy of the King’s loss.

  34. 34

O King! see what is good in Your eyes—

  35. 35

    forgive our iniquities,

  36. 36

    rebuke the seducer [Satan]

  37. 37

    לְהָבִיא הַשֶּׁבֶר וְהַשֵּׁאת.

    let destruction and ruin come upon him;

  38. 38

    וְיֵצֵא חָפוּר

    let him withdraw disgraced

  39. 39

    מֵרֹב פַּחַד וּשְׂאֵת.

    before [Your] great terror and awe;

  40. 40

let the evil decree against him be final

  41. 41

    from the King’s will.

  42. 42

The King and His command approaches

  43. 43

on the day when judgment is recorded,

  44. 44

    He judges the peoples,

  45. 45

    צַדִּיק וְחוֹטֵא וְאָשֵׁם.

    the righteous, the sinner and the guilty;

  46. 46

and now let the King’s scribes be called,

  47. 47

those who cause drought and make rain,

  48. 48

and let them inscribe for the Jews

  49. 49

whatever You desire in the King’s Name.

  50. 50

O King! Put to shame the sun’s brilliance,4So that men will not worship it.

  51. 51

and let the worshippers of Nebo be disgraced,

  52. 52

let man despise his idols of silver

  53. 53

    וְאִישׁ אֱלִילֵי זְהָבוֹ.

    and his idols of gold;

  54. 54

for they will see with their eyes

  55. 55

    His [God’s] return to Zion,

  56. 56

and be uplifted doors to eternity

  57. 57

so that the King may enter.

  58. 58

The wise King Who scatters the wicked

  59. 59

    and also the empty-headed,

  60. 60

and turns the wheel upon them5He punishes them.

  61. 61

    and rebukes them—

  62. 62

    cast out the scorner [Satan],

  63. 63

    and let strife depart,

  64. 64

    וּפִיהוּ לֹא־יִפְעַר.

    that he not open his mouth [against us];

  65. 65

[and say to him]: “That he is forbidden

  66. 66

    to enter the King’s gate.

  67. 67

    If it pleases the King

  68. 68

let there go forth a royal edict from Him

  69. 69

    based on the following:

  70. 70

“I will guard the feet of my children,

  71. 71

and will not put them in stockades6To torture them.

  72. 72

on the day set for judging

  73. 73

who shall prosper and who shall fail,”

  74. 74

for so has the King ordained.

  75. 75

The King sits on the throne of judgment,

  76. 76

small and great, He reviews as one,

  77. 77

and discerns who is truly penitent

  78. 78

and who returns like a dog;7He who returns to his sin as a dog who returns to his vomit.

  79. 79

He will avenge the offended [Israel]

  80. 80

    from the offender [its oppressors]

  81. 81

    in the seventh month [Tishrei]

  82. 82

when the heart of the King is benevolent.

  83. 83

The King of all the earth,

  84. 84

    the Almighty Who answers me

  85. 85

in the day of my distress,

  86. 86

    and Who was with me

  87. 87

every time I was encircled by enemy camps,

  88. 88

may He continue forever to surround me

  89. 89

    with glad songs of rescue,

  90. 90

when I find favor in the eyes of the King.

  91. 91

    O King! Grant superior honor

  92. 92

    to Your servants [Israel],

  93. 93

let their lives be precious in Your eyes

  94. 94

for they are children of the Almighty’s kings,8שֶׁהֵם נִקְרָאִים בְּנֵי מְלָכִים—sons of kings.

  95. 95

and see how the whole of Israel

  96. 96

    every man and woman

  97. 97

come before the King [in judgment].

  98. 98

O King! His servants seek His Presence

  99. 99

    with fasting and affliction [saying],

  100. 100

    “The nations have been warned,

  101. 101

    whoever touches them [Israel]

  102. 102

touches the apple of His eye;”

  103. 103

    and behold Esau oppresses them,

  104. 104

    say to him, “Perverse one,

  105. 105

    why do you transgress

  106. 106

    the King’s command?”

  107. 107

    Awesome King!

  108. 108

    How long will You imprison

  109. 109

the children of Zorach and Peretz,

  110. 110

the twins of Tamar?9The sons of Judah from where the royal House of David were descended and from whence the Messiah will come.

  111. 111

Restore their kingdom and uproot Amalek

  112. 112

    כְּנֶאֱמַר.

    as it is said [in Your Torah, see Deut 25:19];

  113. 113

    for she has not kept

  114. 114

the word [command] of the King.

  115. 115

    O King!

  116. 116

    May His princes and servants

  117. 117

surround Him in His Palace [the Holy Temple],

  118. 118

let them dwell in Bashan and Gilead,

  119. 119

    לְבָדָד שׁוֹכְנִי.

    let them dwell alone [in security];

  120. 120

lead Your people with Your scepter,

  121. 121

    take us out into abundance,

  122. 122

    You my Master, the King.

  123. 123

    O King!

  124. 124

The eyes of all Israel are upon You,

  125. 125

    to gather my multitude,

  126. 126

may they yet dwell in the gates of Jerusalem,

  127. 127

    זְקֵנוֹתַי וּזְקֵינַי.

    my aged women and men;

  128. 128

and then, together they will serve You

  129. 129

my Priests and my deputy Priests,

  130. 130

    and Adonoy will be King.

  131. 131

    O King!

  132. 132

The magnificence of the House of Adonoy,

  133. 133

    my eyes long to behold,

  134. 134

    and the whole people together

  135. 135

    לְשִׁמְךָ יַאֲדִירוּן.

    will magnify Your Name;

  136. 136

then will our mouths be filled with laughter,

  137. 137

    and all will joyfully sing:

  138. 138

“[God] will be King in Jeshurun.”

  139. 139

O King! [How long] will my enemies exult?

  140. 140

    How long will they prevail?

  141. 141

    They have grown and prospered

  142. 142

    וְהֶחֱרִיבוּ אֲרִיאֵל.

    and destroyed the Holy Temple;

  143. 143

behold they say: “Our hands are mighty,”

  144. 144

and I have not been called

  145. 145

    to come to the King.

  146. 146

O King! Rise in Your [lit. His] anger

  147. 147

    to destroy as You promised

  148. 148

those who eat the flesh of swine,

  149. 149

    הַשֶּׁקֶץ וְהָעַכְבָּר.

    [and] the [other] abominated animals and mice;

  150. 150

    יָרִיעַ אַף יַצְרִיחַ

    let Him trumpet and shout,

  151. 151

He will prevail over His enemies,

  152. 152

for this is the promise of the King.

  153. 153

    O Great King,

  154. 154

remove from us the heart of stone,

  155. 155

whiten our sins like snow and wool,

  156. 156

that we may cling to You

  157. 157

like the red to the white;10The yolk of the egg to the albumen.

  158. 158

grant the king [Moshiach] Your justice

  159. 159

and Your righteousness to the king’s son[s].11The Children of Israel are called the sons of kings (בְּנֵי מְלָכִים).

  160. 160

O King Who faithfully judges the poor,

  161. 161

    You see

  162. 162

that the pride of our spirit is broken12We are no longer haughty or arrogant.

  163. 163

    even this day.

  164. 164

    A broken and humbled heart

  165. 165

    אֱלֹהִים לֹא־תִבְזֶה.

    You, God, will not despise;

  166. 166

[therefore] deposit our works13Our repentance and good deeds.

  167. 167

in the treasury of the King.

  168. 168

O King grant Your righteousness to Israel,

  169. 169

for he is a tender youth,

  170. 170

    cling to him,

  171. 171

    אִישׁ וְלוֹיוֹת כְּמַעַר.

    as a man clings to his wife;

  172. 172

    do not despise him,

  173. 173

but turn to the prayer of the destitute,

  174. 174

and to all the servants of the King

  175. 175

who are at the gate of the King.

  176. 176

O King, I have come to beseech Him,

  177. 177

to inscribe me for a good life,

  178. 178

from the abundance of His House,

  179. 179

    to be filled,

  180. 180

let all nations gather in the Name of God,

  181. 181

and let them go up every year

  182. 182

to bow in worship to the King.

  183. 183

    Almighty! King!

  184. 184

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

  185. 185

    governs with kindness

  186. 186

forgives the iniquities of His people.

  187. 187

He removes their sins one by one,

  188. 188

    increasing forgiveness to sinners,

  189. 189

    and pardon to transgressors.

  190. 190

    Acting righteously

  191. 191

    עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ.

    with all who are of flesh and spirit;

  192. 192

    not according to their wickedness

  193. 193

    does He repay them.

  194. 194

    Almighty!

  195. 195

    You instructed us to recite

  196. 196

    שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

    the thirteen Divine attributes;

  197. 197

    remember unto us this day

  198. 198

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

  199. 199

    as You made them known

  200. 200

to the humble Moses of old,

  201. 201

    as it is written,

  202. 202

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

  203. 203

    and stood with him there,

  204. 204

    and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

  205. 205

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  206. 206

And Adonoy passed before him [Moses],

  207. 207

    and proclaimed:

  208. 208

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  209. 209

    Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  210. 210

    Slow to Anger,

  211. 211

and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.

  212. 212

    Keeper of kindness

  213. 213

    for thousands of generations,

  214. 214

    Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,

  215. 215

    וְחַטָּאָה

    and sin;

  216. 216

and Acquitter of those who repent.

  217. 217

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  218. 218

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  219. 219

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

  220. 220

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  221. 221

    “For You, my Master,

  222. 222

    are good and forgiving,

  223. 223

    and abounding in kindness

  224. 224

to all who call upon You.”

  225. 225

Do not enter into judgment with us,

  226. 226

for no living soul will be justified before You.

  227. 227

Even in His holy ones, He does not trust,

  228. 228

and the heavens are not innocent in His eyes.

  229. 229

Even more, since man is but a worm

  230. 230

and the son of man a maggot.

  231. 231

Behold we are guilty in Your Presence,

  232. 232

we are not worthy to stand in Your Presence

  233. 233

    because of this.

  234. 234

Who cay say: “My heart is pure,

  235. 235

I have cleansed it from sin.”

  236. 236

As a father has compassion on his children

  237. 237

so do You have compassion on us, Adonoy.

  238. 238

    לַיהֹוָה הַיְשׁוּעָה,

    Deliverance is Adonoy’s;

  239. 239

upon Your people is Your blessing. Selah!

  240. 240

Adonoy of Hosts is with us,

  241. 241

a stronghold for us is the God of Jacob. Selah!

  242. 242

    Adonoy of Hosts!

  243. 243

fortunate is the man who trusts in You.

  244. 244

    יְהֹוָה הוֹשִֽׁיעָה,

    Adonoy, deliver us;

  245. 245

the King will answer us on the day we call.

  246. 246

“Please pardon the sins of this nation

  247. 247

    in accordance with the greatness

  248. 248

    חַסְדֶּֽךָ.

    of Your lovingkindness;

  249. 249

and as You forgave this people

  250. 250

from when it left Egypt until now.”

  251. 251

    And there it is said:

  252. 252

    “And Adonoy said,

  253. 253

I have pardoned [them] as you have asked.”

  254. 254

Incline Your ear, my God, and hear,

  255. 255

open Your eyes and behold our desolate places,

  256. 256

    וְהָעִיר אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלֶֽיהָ

    and the city which is called by Your Name;

  257. 257

for it is not on account of our righteousness

  258. 258

that we let fall our supplication before You,

  259. 259

but because of Your great mercy.

  260. 260

My Master, hear! My Master, pardon!

  261. 261

My Master, listen and take action,

  262. 262

    do not delay!

  263. 263

    For Your sake, my God,

  264. 264

    because Your Name is proclaimed

  265. 265

over Your city and over Your people.
