Selichot Nusach Lita Linear · Fast of Gedaliah, Chapter 10

‹›
  1. 1

This prayer was composed by Rabbi Benjamin ben Zorach.

  2. 2

You taught the way of repentance

  3. 3

    לְבַת הַשּׁוֹבֵבָה.

    to the rebellious daughter [Israel];

  4. 4

between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur

  5. 5

we are to return unto You [in repentance].

  6. 6

Cause us to return to You, Adonoy,

  7. 7

    and we shall return.

  8. 8

    Long ago, from of old,

  9. 9

You prepared the way for repentance,

  10. 10

before You spread out the mighty heavens,

  11. 11

    וִיסוֹדֵי רְגוּבָה.

    and established the earth;

  12. 12

    thus, for all who return,

  13. 13

repentance is a balm and a remedy.

  14. 14

Those who knock at Your door,

  15. 15

do not send them away empty-handed.

  16. 16

Cause us to return to You, Adonoy,

  17. 17

    and we shall return.

  18. 18

Behold, the first to be created from dust,

  19. 19

Adam, the first to be formed,

  20. 20

You tried him with a light commandment,1Not to eat from the tree of knowledge.

  21. 21

    which he did not keep.

  22. 22

You were indignant and angry with him,

  23. 23

    שְׁנוֹתָיו לְקַצֵּר.

    [and decreed] to shorten his years;

  24. 24

    but when he repented,

  25. 25

You preserved him like the apple of Your eye.

  26. 26

Cause us to return to You, Adonoy,

  27. 27

    and we shall return.

  28. 28

When his offspring [Cain] went astray

  29. 29

    by shedding his brother’s blood,

  30. 30

You sentenced him to be a wanderer,

  31. 31

    לֶכֶת כֹּה וָכֹה.

    to go from place to place;

  32. 32

but when he returned to You

  33. 33

    and left his evil ways,

  34. 34

You prolonged his life to seven generations,

  35. 35

    anyone who found him

  36. 36

    was forbidden to slay him.

  37. 37

Cause us to return to You, Adonoy,

  38. 38

    and we shall return.

  39. 39

He [Reuben] who profaned his father’s bed,

  40. 40

    was unstable as water,

  41. 41

his feet had almost slipped2He was almost condemned to Gehinom for his sin.

  42. 42

had he not poured out his heart as water.3Before You in repentance.

  43. 43

    The young lion [Judah] sinned

  44. 44

with Tamar at Enaim,4See Genesis 38:15–23.

  45. 45

    when he confessed his sin,

  46. 46

You inclined the scale to justify him.

  47. 47

Cause us to return to You, Adonoy,

  48. 48

    and we shall return.

  49. 49

He broke the barriers of the world,

  50. 50

did [Achav] son of Omri, with his wickedness,

  51. 51

he desired to worship the Asherim idols,

  52. 52

and added transgression upon sin.5By causing others to do likewise.

  53. 53

    You tore up his sentence

  54. 54

    בְּשׁוּבוֹ מִלִּפְשַׁע.

    when he repented of his transgressions;

  55. 55

You had mercy on him as he confessed

  56. 56

    and forsook [his evil way],

  57. 57

and in You he found deliverance.

  58. 58

Cause us to return to You, Adonoy,

  59. 59

    and we shall return.

  60. 60

    Tongues as sharp as arrows

  61. 61

had the people of [Ninveh] the great city,

  62. 62

    their errors and willful sins

  63. 63

    רָבּוּ עַד־לְמַעְלָה.

    were numerous, without count;

  64. 64

when You sent the vision of their destruction6Through the prophet Jonah.

  65. 65

    אֲחָזוּם רֶתֶת וְחַלְחָלָה.

    they were seized with trembling and terror;

  66. 66

    they repented properly, and

  67. 67

it was accepted before Your glorious throne.

  68. 68

Cause us to return to You, Adonoy,

  69. 69

    and we shall return.

  70. 70

You Who searches the innermost heart,

  71. 71

and Who is girded with might,

  72. 72

teach us that we may know

  73. 73

    לֶכֶת בְּאֹרַח יְשָׁרָה.

    to walk the straight path;

  74. 74

    if our rebelliousness is great

  75. 75

    with transgression and crookedness,

  76. 76

for Your sake, please, cause us to return,

  77. 77

that we should repent in the proper way.

  78. 78

Cause us to return to You, Adonoy,

  79. 79

    and we shall return.

  80. 80

    Almighty! King!

  81. 81

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

  82. 82

    governs with kindness

  83. 83

forgives the iniquities of His people.

  84. 84

He removes their sins one by one,

  85. 85

    increasing forgiveness to sinners,

  86. 86

    and pardon to transgressors.

  87. 87

    Acting righteously

  88. 88

    עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ.

    with all who are of flesh and spirit;

  89. 89

    not according to their wickedness

  90. 90

    does He repay them.

  91. 91

    Almighty!

  92. 92

    You instructed us to recite

  93. 93

    שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

    the thirteen Divine attributes;

  94. 94

    remember unto us this day

  95. 95

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

  96. 96

    as You made them known

  97. 97

to the humble Moses of old,

  98. 98

    as it is written,

  99. 99

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

  100. 100

    and stood with him there,

  101. 101

    and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

  102. 102

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  103. 103

    וַיַּֽעֲבֹר יְהֹוָה עַל פָּנָיו

    And Adonoy passed before him [Moses];

  104. 104

    and proclaimed:

  105. 105

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  106. 106

    Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  107. 107

    Slow to Anger,

  108. 108

and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.

  109. 109

    Keeper of kindness

  110. 110

    for thousands of generations,

  111. 111

    Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,

  112. 112

    וְחַטָּאָה

    and sin;

  113. 113

and Acquitter of those who repent.”

  114. 114

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  115. 115

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  116. 116

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

  117. 117

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  118. 118

    “For You, my Master,

  119. 119

    are good and forgiving,

  120. 120

    and abounding in kindness

  121. 121

to all who call upon You.”

  122. 122

    אַל תִּזְכָּר לָנוּ עֲו‍ֹנוֹת רִאשׁוֹנִים.

    Remember not the sins of our ancestors;

  123. 123

let Your compassion come swiftly toward us,

  124. 124

for we have been brought very low.

  125. 125

The sins of our youth and our transgressions,

  126. 126

    אַל תִּזְכֹּר

    remember not;

  127. 127

    with Your kindliness remember us

  128. 128

for the sake of Your goodness, Adonoy.

  129. 129

    Remember Your mercies, Adonoy,

  130. 130

    and kindlinesses

  131. 131

for they are from the beginning of the world.

  132. 132

    Remember us Adonoy

  133. 133

    with favor for Your people

  134. 134

    recall us with Your deliverance.

  135. 135

    Remember Your congregation

  136. 136

which You have acquired of old,

  137. 137

    You have redeemed the tribe

  138. 138

    of Your inheritance,

  139. 139

this mountain of Zion where You have dwelled.

  140. 140

Remember, Adonoy, the affection of Jerusalem,

  141. 141

the love of Zion, forget not until eternity.

  142. 142

    Remember, Adonoy,

  143. 143

to the sons of Edom, the day of Jerusalem,

  144. 144

    [it was they] who said,

  145. 145

“Raze it, raze it to its very foundations.”

  146. 146

    You will arise

  147. 147

    and have compassion on Zion,

  148. 148

for it is time to be gracious to her,

  149. 149

for the appointed time has come.

  150. 150

    Remember Abraham, Isaac, Israel,

  151. 151

    Your servants,

  152. 152

to whom You swore by Your very Self,

  153. 153

    and You said to them:

  154. 154

    “I will multiply your seed

  155. 155

    כְּכוֹכְבֵי הַשָּׁמָֽיִם.

    as the stars of the heavens;

  156. 156

and all this land that I have promised,

  157. 157

I will give to your descendants,

  158. 158

and they will inherit it forever.”

  159. 159

    Remember Your servants,

  160. 160

    לְאַבְרָהָם לְיִצְחָק וּלְיַעֲקֹב.

    Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob;

  161. 161

do not regard the stubborness of this people,

  162. 162

or their wickedness, or their sin.

  163. 163

    Do not, we beseech You

  164. 164

    place upon us this sin,

  165. 165

wherein we have acted foolishly and sinned.

  166. 166

    חָטָֽאנוּ צוּרֵֽנוּ

    We have sinned, our Rock;

  167. 167

    pardon us our Creator.
