Love of Torah scholars and those who fear heaven and contemplate His name — Love of Torah scholars, those who fear heaven, and contemplate His name also stems from love of G-d, for one who has a faithful friend, he also loves his [the friend’s] children and household. And furthermore since he deeply loves his friend and seeks his welfare with all his soul and all his heart, everyone who benefits and brings satisfaction to his friend he also loves. And further, we have already said that reason obligates anyone who is similar to him to love an admirable person, perfect in character and understanding—whether he himself possesses admirable qualities, or merely loves perfection even though it is not present in him. Thus, for all these reasons, it is considered proper [lit. they sought] to arouse love for Torah scholars, those who fear Hashem, and those who contemplate his name (Malachi 13:15), so they should be as dear [to him] as the pupil of his eye. And behold the reward of this, as our Rabbis of blessed memory say (Shabbat 23b): “He who loves the rabbis, will have children who are rabbis”. And the essence of love is in the heart, but one needs to also express it with action. If Hashem increases his means, he should support Torah scholars with all his soul and might [wealth], and he should both act and cause others to act. And if he doesn’t have the means, in any case he should personally fullfill [the principle that it is] “greater to serve [a Torah scholar than to study under one]” with all his strength such that [the scholar] will be able to observe the Torah and do his service without difficulty. And great is one who causes others to act, more on which will be written below. And it goes without saying that one must guard his soul greatly to not pain a Torah scholar and [to ensure that] no Torah scholar finds a reason to resent him, as the teaching already elucidated (Pirkei Avot 2:10, Midrash Tanchuma Yitro 12): “come and warm yourself by the fire of the sages, but beware of being singed etc.”

And if it is a great obligation to love Torah scholars even though they are not relatives, since they are all like relatives, even more so, if the Torah scholar is a family member, one is obligated to love them with an even greater love. And it is the task of the brothers and the relatives [of the scholar] to support him even more so and with greater strength so that he may remain devoted to the Torah and do his service [of Hashem]. And this will bring them praise, renown, and splendor. And in this way they honor the [deceased] father since he will receive spiritual satisfaction through his son the Torah scholar. And they too will have a portion, [for] this is the portion of each person in all of their labors, and it is found that they did kindness for [both] the dead and the living. “Happy is the man that does this, and the son of man that holds this” (Isaiah 56:2). “She is a tree of to those who lay hold on her, and happy are those who hold fast to her” (Proverbs 3:18)

Surely, one should not view a Torah scholar as small in his eyes because he provides for his needs, G-d forbid, nor should he give himself credit for sustaining and supporting him, for [the torah scholar’s] portion rests among [the benefactor’s] assets, as is said on the verse (Exodus 22:24): “to the poor among your people”: it is [merely] the mission of the Merciful one that he is doing. And not only this, but what the poor person does for the rich benefactor is greater than what the benefactor does for the poor person, for it is a merit for him [the rich person] in the world where all is good, as our Sages of blessed memory say (Ruth Rabbah 5:9, Vayikra Rabbah 34:8) on the verse (Ruth 2:19): “the man with whom I did [kindness] today was Boaz” [that is, Ruth said she did kindness to Boaz despite him giving her food], therefore one should be very careful about [the recipient’s] honor. And also the Torah scholars must be careful with the honor of their rich brethren who benefit and support them. For if it is said (Eruvin 86a) that Rabbi [Yehuda] and Rabbi Akiva honored the wealthy even though were not dependent on them, how much more so is one who needs them and benefits from them obligated to not be ungrateful, to show them some respect, and to exert himself somewhat on their behalf to give them satisfaction. Extra affection should be shown to them, and [the scholar] should teach them “the proper way to go and the deeds they should perform” (Exodus 18:20). With pleasant conversation and sweet language, “open rebuke is better than love” (Proverbs 27:5). And he should share in their distress and grieve with them and pray for them, and he should always pray for them so that they will succeed in all they undertake. And in all their Torah study and good deeds, they [the scholars] should have them [their supporters] in mind as well. Regarding this and similar matters, “the wise man shall hear and increase learning”(Proverbs 1:5), and he shall do so that he may find favor and good understanding in the eyes of G-d and man.
