ואשר שאלתם על אודות החזן שהיו רוב הציבור חפצים בו ומקצתם אינם חפצים בו. ולא נתרצו לו יעשה על פי הדוכוס שביקש הממאנים להתרצות. לא טוב עשה להמנות ש"צ דרחמנא על פי הדוכוס. ובארצינו היו מקפידים מאד על כיוצא בזה. וכבר נעשה מעשה. בימי אב"י הע"זרי בקולוני"יא שנתמנה חזן והלך יהודי אחד ונתכוון לכבדו וגרם שההגמון שלח אחריו ולקח מצנפתו מעל ראשו ונתן לרב ואמר הא לך החזנות. וכעס מאד אף על כנגד ההגמון. ואמר אדוני אין דיני לקבל ממך עבודת בוראינו. ולא קבל ממנו החזנות. אע"פ שתחלה קבל עליו. וסבורני שקנס את היהודי גם החזן עליו לתקן:
Q. The members of the community wanted to engage A as their cantor but encountered the opposition of a few members. A asked the Duke for help, and the latter brought about A's election by asking the opposition to withdraw its objections. A. A did wrong in procuring his election as cantor — a deputy of the community before the Almighty — with the help of the Duke. In our country a matter like that would be very sternly dealt with. A similar case happened in Cologne in the time of R. Eliezer b. Joel. A Jew wanting to honor a newly elected cantor, arranged that the bishop should invite the cantor to his house. Then the bishop removed his miter and gave it to the Rabbi [cantor] and said: "I give you herewith the office of cantor." The cantor became very much incensed and said to the bishop: "Sir, our law does not permit me to receive the right to serve our Lord from your hands."
