אם עלה לך כללים בעבודה ובמוסר, מוטב. ואם לאו, אות היא, או שאין אתה שוקע את עצמך ואת חייך בתורה ומוסר, או ששוטה אתה ואינך מרגיש את כשלונותיך ואת נצחונותיך. כי האיש המשתדל להמשיך את כל חייו לתורה ומוסר, ע״כ מוצא מניעות ועכובים, לא חיצונים בלבד, כעול הפרנסה וכדומה, רק גם בקרבו פנימה, בעצלות נטויות ומדות רעות ר״ל. וכיון שהוא עוסק תמיד בהשתדלות ובמלחמה זו, לפעמים נכשל ולפעמים מנצח, על כרחו יוצא לו כללים, באופן זה ובתחבולה זו מנצח, ובאופן ותחבולה זו נכשל. ומי שאינם עולים בקרבו כללים לעצמו סימן הוא, או שאינו ממשיך את חייו לתורה ומוסר ואינו לוחם, אין לו, לא נצחון ולא כשלון, או שהוא שוטה שאינו מרגיש את עצמו, לא כשלונו ולא נצחונו.
PRACTICE FOR SPIRITUAL MATURATION (I): If in the process of working on yourself, you develop certain principles of personal practice, consider this a sign of maturation. If you fail to develop such principles, on the other hand, then either you have failed to immerse yourself and your life in Torah study and the pursuit of ethical behavior, or you are a fool unaware fool of seeing your own failures and victories. There are those who seek for their entire lives to draw themselves into a world of Torah and ethics despite all the things that hold them back and deter them (and not solely exterior factors either such as the need to earn a living, but also inner ones like indolence, destructive urges, negative character traits, and so forth). Given such spiritual seekers are constantly involved in this inner battle, sometimes victorious and sometimes defeated, they will then conclude that there are principles of personal practice that are working one’s spiritual growth and those that are not working. Those who do not draw such conclusions are either not engaged in the struggle for integrating a life of Torah and ethics, or are not truly striving, as a result of which they know neither victories nor defeats or they are mere fools devoid of self-awareness.
