אל תגביה קולך לשוב עזות אך כל דבריך תדבר בענוה וכבוד כי דברי חכמים בנחת נשמעים ואל תרבה דברים בטלים אם עמדת בין האנשים וכ"ש בין הנשים אל תרבה שיחה. אם באו לצים במקום מושבך פתאום ומדברים דברי הבאי אל תוכיחם פן ישנאוך לך מאצלם פן תלמוד ממעשיהם הרעים כי הלצנות שנייה לערוה:
Do not raise your voice to answer arrogantly but all your words should be spoken with humility and dignity. For the words of the scholars are heard in quietness. Do not multiply idle matters.1Yoma 19b. If you stand among men, all the more so among women, do not speak excessively.2Aboth 1:5. If scoffers suddenly come to your neighborhood and speak vain matters, do not reprove them lest they hate you. Leave them, for you might learn from their evil deeds, for scorning is second to immorality.3Ibid., 3:18.
