אל תעניש ישראל ואל תקללו אך התפלל עליו שישלים הקב"ה לבו ויחזירהו למוטב ואל תמסור עליו דין לאמר הצור ינקמנו מידו וישיב לעושה הרע כרעתו כי כל המוסר דין על חבירו באה מדת הדין לפני הקדוש ברוך הוא ואומרת רבונו של עולם לזה תעשה דין ראוי הוא שתעניש זה על כך וכך כללו של דבר אל תקלל שום אדם כי פעמים רבות הקללות חוזרות וחלות כולן על ראשו ועל זרעו שכן מצינו שכל הקללות שקלל דוד את יואב נתקיימו בזרעו. אל תשנא את חבירך מפני אהבת חבירך השונא אותו כי אין לשנוא אלא מי שהקב"ה שונאו ועוד פעמים שיתפייסו שניהם והוא לא יתפייס עמך כי שנאתך היתה חנם ואל תהי בז לכל אדם שאין לך אדם שאין לו שעה:
Do not punish an Israelite, nor curse him1Berakoth 10a. but pray for him that the Holy One, blessed be He, make his heart whole and return him to right conduct. Do not invoke judgement on him saying, “The Lord should avenge me from his hand and visit evil upon him according to his wickedness.” For he who invokes divine judgement upon his neighbor, the attribute of justice comes before the Holy One, blessed be He, and says, “Lord of all the Universe, shall we then acquiesce to his request? he is deserving to be punished for such and such.” The conclusion of the matter is do not curse anyone for very often all curses return and fall on one’s own head and children, as in the case of David, we find that all the curses with which he maledicted Joab were fulfilled in his own children.2Sanhedrin 48b. Do not hate your neighbor because of the love of your friend who hates him. One should not hate except him whom the Holy One, blessed be He, hates.3Pesahim 113b. Moreover, it occurs at times that the two become reconciled. But he (whom you hate because of love for a friend) will not be reconciled with you because your animosity was without cause. Do not go about shaming people, for there is no man who is without his hour.4Aboth 4:3.
