Selichot Nusach Lita Linear · Second Day of the Ten Days of Penitence, Chapter 4

‹›
  1. 1

Our God and God of our fathers!

  3. 3

    Only in You, Adonoy,

  4. 4

    is the hope of Israel.

  5. 5

In later times and in early times

  6. 6

    was Israel saved by Adonoy.

  7. 7

Why, then, is this day so delayed

  8. 8

    for so long a time

  9. 9

while we await Your deliverance, Adonoy.

  10. 10

I resided and was delayed in exile

  11. 11

during the days that I was forsaken,

  12. 12

in the land of a detestable

  13. 13

    and ugly people.

  14. 14

    Why has there been

  15. 15

such a decline in my dignity,

  16. 16

while I was chastised with suffering.

  17. 17

Still, I say: “Hope to Adonoy,

  18. 18

be strong and He will give you courage

  19. 19

    and hope to Adonoy.”

  20. 20

    You were originally

  21. 21

the sword of our pride.1Through You our enemies were destroyed.

  22. 22

    When we hoped for You,

  23. 23

also, the way of Your judgments

  24. 24

we desired.2To see Your judgements inflicted upon the enemy.

  25. 25

    Why is it so

  26. 26

that there is no person of merit to pray

  27. 27

    for atonement of our guilt.

  28. 28

Regarding our suffering the nations say

  29. 29

that our bones have dried up

  30. 30

    and our hope is lost.

  31. 31

    We recall the previous exiles

  32. 32

    but their duration was short.

  33. 33

The two first exiles were limited

  34. 34

but the current exile is still intense.

  35. 35

Why should we be regarded as animals,3Let to the slaughter.

  36. 36

    in such variance

  37. 37

to what is normal among other people.

  38. 38

The hope of Israel is Adonoy

  39. 39

Who is their Savior during times of travail.

  40. 40

    To carry

  41. 41

and be relieved of the yoke of the nations

  42. 42

is what the children must do

  43. 43

because the Torah obliges them to do so.

  44. 44

They are driven from their homeland (Israel)

  45. 45

and their Beis Hamikdash is destroyed.

  46. 46

    Why should the Father hide

  47. 47

    their path (of redemption)

  48. 48

which is promised in their behalf,

  49. 49

that there is hope for ultimate salvation

  50. 50

    by the word of God,

  51. 51

that the Children of Israel will return

  52. 52

    to their boundaries.

  53. 53

    My legs have virtually buckled

  54. 54

and they have fallen [from the path of God]

  55. 55

    because I became jealous

  56. 56

    of the mockers of Torah

  57. 57

    who distort the proper ways.

  58. 58

Why should there not be destruction

  59. 59

    of the supremacy

  60. 60

of those who band against God.

  61. 61

When this happens, those who trust in Adonoy

  62. 62

    will obtain renewed strength

  63. 63

and grow wings like eagles.4See Radak Isaiah 40,31.

  64. 64

    I have been absolutely pursued

  65. 65

but the year of my redemption has not come.

  66. 66

We are handed over to those who afflict us

  67. 67

    and pull out our hair

  68. 68

while we are not confident of redemption.

  69. 69

    Why are our heroes pursued—

  70. 70

the few strong among us that remain.

  71. 71

    I hope sincerely to Adonoy

  72. 72

that He will turn to me.

  73. 73

Your vines5Referring to the nation of Israel. that were fenced it

  74. 74

have been penetrated by the nations

  75. 75

    וְהִבְאִישׁוּ.

    and destroyed and plundered;

  76. 76

    whereas the thorns

  77. 77

that were removed from the vineyard6Referring to the nations that veered from God.

  78. 78

became arrogant and did not rot.

  79. 79

Why then have they become old and strong?

  80. 80

Why are they not ashamed, as promised?7By the prophets.—

  81. 81

“The hope of Israel is Adonoy

  82. 82

and those who forsake You will be shamed.”8There appears to be a juxtaposition in the verse. The last two lines refer to the promise of the prophet mentioned above.

  83. 83

    Those who engage in falseness

  84. 84

    glorified themselves by saying:

  85. 85

“What we desired we saw [in Israel’s state].”

  86. 86

They explained this by saying: “Our signs

  87. 87

that we used as indications were just.”9Referring to the arrows which they shot that landed toward Jerusalem, serving as an indication that Jerusalem would be destroyed.

  88. 88

    Why is their way successful

  89. 89

while we, who awaited Your kindness

  90. 90

    became tormented.

  91. 91

    Adonoy, be merciful to us

  92. 92

    because we hope to You.

  93. 93

The resurrection of the Beis Hamikdash

  94. 94

in which there were thirteen breaches—

  95. 95

    its time appears distant.

  96. 96

The breach extended to the roof.

  97. 97

    Why should the wicked live

  98. 98

    and not be destroyed

  99. 99

so that those who trust in Adonoy

  100. 100

    will then inherit the land?

  101. 101

The nations plunder Your inheritance10Referring to the land of Israel.

  102. 102

in order to drive us from Your portion.

  103. 103

    “Turn back, turn back, Shulamith,”

  104. 104

they say in order to separate us from God.

  105. 105

However, we reply: “Why are you so arrogant

  106. 106

    and say to each other

  107. 107

that we shall disassociate Israel from God?”

  108. 108

[On the contrary,] “Adonoy is good to those who trust Him

  109. 109

and to the soul that seeks Him.”

  110. 110

    O God!

  111. 111

the answer to the ‘whys’ that we ask

  112. 112

we can answer with a full mouth.

  113. 113

We have sinned to Adonoy, our God,

  114. 114

and these predicaments have befallen us.

  115. 115

    Your judgments are just

  116. 116

and You (even when inflicting pain)

  117. 117

    are supreme and exalted.

  118. 118

    Righteousness is Yours

  119. 119

and we are full of shame.

  120. 120

    You warned us many times

  121. 121

and we said that we will not listen.

  122. 122

The voice that dripped from Your prophets

  123. 123

    we rejected instead of listening.

  124. 124

Let Your power be aggrandized forever,

  125. 125

You Who can gather the stray people,

  126. 126

    and in complete repentance,

  127. 127

    bring us back to You.

  128. 128

    [The nations will ask:] “Why

  129. 129

    is your garment red?”

  130. 130

The time for this question is near.

  131. 131

    Their blood will be sprinkled

  132. 132

on the garment that he wears.

  133. 133

    We will be eternally grateful

  134. 134

    for the day [of redemption]

  135. 135

which will come in its time.

  136. 136

[We then will say] “This is Adonoy

  137. 137

    for Whom we hoped

  138. 138

and we will rejoice and be happy

  139. 139

    in His deliverance.”

  140. 140

    Almighty! King!

  141. 141

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

  142. 142

    governs with kindness

  143. 143

forgives the iniquities of His people.

  144. 144

He removes their sins one by one,

  145. 145

    increasing forgiveness to sinners,

  146. 146

    and pardon to transgressors.

  147. 147

    Acting righteously

  148. 148

    עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ.

    with all who are of flesh and spirit;

  149. 149

    not according to their wickedness

  150. 150

    does He repay them.

  151. 151

    Almighty!

  152. 152

    You instructed us to recite

  153. 153

    שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

    the thirteen Divine attributes;

  154. 154

    remember unto us this day

  155. 155

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

  156. 156

    as You made them known

  157. 157

to the humble Moses of old,

  158. 158

    as it is written,

  159. 159

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

  160. 160

    and stood with him there,

  161. 161

    and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

  162. 162

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  163. 163

“And Adonoy passed before him [Moses]

  164. 164

    and proclaimed:

  165. 165

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  166. 166

    Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  167. 167

    Slow to Anger,

  168. 168

and Abundant in Kindness and Truth.

  169. 169

    Keeper of kindness

  170. 170

    for thousands of generations,

  171. 171

    Endurer of iniquity and transgression,

  172. 172

    and sin,

  173. 173

And Acquitter of those who repent.”

  174. 174

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  175. 175

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  176. 176

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

  177. 177

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  178. 178

    For You, my Master,

  179. 179

    are good and forgiving,

  180. 180

    and abounding in kindness

  181. 181

to all who call upon You.

  182. 182

    Deliver us Adonoy,

  183. 183

for the pious man has ceased,

  184. 184

    for the faithful have disappeared

  185. 185

from among the sons of man.

  186. 186

The pious man is gone from the land,

  187. 187

and the man of righteousness is no more.

  188. 188

Behold that there is no [righteous] man,

  189. 189

    and we are bewildered,

  190. 190

for there is no one to pray [for us].

  191. 191

You are our King, O God,

  192. 192

    command the deliverance of Jacob.

  193. 193

    Israel waits for Adonoy[‘s deliverance]

  194. 194

    from now and forever.

  195. 195

As a father has compassion on his children

  196. 196

so do You have compassion on us, Adonoy.

  197. 197

    לַיהֹוָה הַיְשׁוּעָה,

    Deliverance is Adonoy’s;

  198. 198

upon Your people is Your blessing. Selah!

  199. 199

Adonoy of Hosts is with us,

  200. 200

a stronghold for us is the God of Jacob. Selah!

  201. 201

    Adonoy of Hosts!

  202. 202

fortunate is the man who trusts in You.

  203. 203

    Adonoy, deliver us!

  204. 204

the King will answer us on the day we call.

  205. 205

The Chazzan repeats after the congregation:

  206. 206

“Please pardon the sins of this nation

  207. 207

    in accordance with the greatness

  208. 208

    חַסְדֶּֽךָ.

    of Your lovingkindness;

  209. 209

and as You forgave this people

  210. 210

from when it left Egypt until now.”

  211. 211

    And there it is said:

  212. 212

    The Congregation says:

  213. 213

    “And Adonoy said,

  214. 214

I have pardoned [them] as you have asked.”

  215. 215

Incline Your ear, my God, and hear,

  216. 216

open Your eyes and behold our desolate places,

  217. 217

    וְהָעִיר אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלֶֽיהָ

    and the city which is called by Your Name;

  218. 218

for it is not on account of our righteousness

  219. 219

that we let fall our supplication before You,

  220. 220

but because of Your great mercy.

  221. 221

My Master, hear! My Master, pardon!

  222. 222

My Master, listen and take action,

  223. 223

    do not delay!

  224. 224

    For Your sake, my God,

  225. 225

    because Your Name is proclaimed

  226. 226

over Your city and over Your people.
