Selichot Nusach Lita Linear · Third Day of the Ten Days of Penitence, Chapter 6

‹›
  1. 1

This prayer was composed by R’ Shlomo Ibn Gabirol.

  2. 2

Our God and God of our fathers!

  3. 3

I am appalled in my great affliction,

  4. 4

for on the day when my sins are reckoned,

  5. 5

what will I plead before my Master?

  6. 6

    I am desolate and speechless

  7. 7

when I remember how guilty I am,

  8. 8

    I am ashamed and disgraced.

  9. 9

    בְּהֶבֶל כָּלוּ יָמַי.

    My days are consumed in vanity;

  10. 10

because of the shame of my youth,

  11. 11

there is no peace in my bones,

  12. 12

    I am burnt with fever

  13. 13

because the scroll [of my debts] is unfolded,

  14. 14

and the Creditor has come to collect.

  15. 15

I held fast to my darkness,

  16. 16

and my soul did not consider

  17. 17

that I am a stranger and a sojourner here.

  18. 18

Woe unto me when my day comes,

  19. 19

then I will awake from my dream,

  20. 20

    and return to my place.

  21. 21

And then for the sins I did,

  22. 22

    and the transgression I committed,

  23. 23

    what excuse will I offer

  24. 24

to Him [God] Who sent me here?

  25. 25

The evil in my heart enticed me,

  26. 26

and for the iniquity which exhausted me,

  27. 27

I was met from the womb.

  28. 28

The degenerate imagines in his soul

  29. 29

that he is like a tree planted by a brook,

  30. 30

while in fact he is carried to the grave.

  31. 31

A false allusion clings to him,

  32. 32

which melts away on his [final] journey,

  33. 33

and he looks from side to side.

  34. 34

He is cast [into the grave]

  35. 35

    like a silent stone,

  36. 36

and carries into the grave nothing

  37. 37

    of all that he possessed.

  38. 38

His strength did not support him

  39. 39

even when his soul carried him,

  40. 40

how much less when the fires consume him.

  41. 41

    “My iniquity ensnared me,”

  42. 42

behold these are the words of my soul

  43. 43

    during my existence on earth.

  44. 44

    לְזֹאת נַפְשִׁי נְשַׁמָּה.

    Therefore my soul is devastated;

  45. 45

and like a man lying in disgrace

  46. 46

    I must return there naked.

  47. 47

I was carried away by my sins

  48. 48

while in my heart I called out:

  49. 49

    “I have sinned,”

  50. 50

that which is right, I did not desire,

  51. 51

and to the obstinacy of my heart, I clung,

  52. 52

to what avail is my crying now.

  53. 53

Bear the punishment of your guilt, my soul

  54. 54

    behold your sin confronts you,

  55. 55

    so, therefore, bear your disgrace.

  56. 56

When I am perplexed about my iniquity,

  57. 57

my thoughts say to me [“don’t despair]

  58. 58

for we fall into the hand of Adonoy.”

  59. 59

Turn from the Throne of Your Dwelling,

  60. 60

and open the door for me,

  61. 61

for there is none beside You.

  62. 62

    O Rock, shield me,

  63. 63

    redeem me from my iniquity

  64. 64

    and teach me Your Torah.

  65. 65

    קוֹלִי שְׁמַע כְּחַסְדֶּךָ.

    Hear my voice according to Your kindness;

  66. 66

and on the day I stand before You

  67. 67

do not turn away Your servant in anger.

  68. 68

    רְאֵה עָנְיִי וַעֲנֵנִי.

    See my affliction and answer me;

  69. 69

behold I am in Your hand,

  70. 70

and You Adonoy, be gracious to me.

  71. 71

Send Your truth and Your kindness

  72. 72

to the people [Israel] who cry unto You,

  73. 73

even to me, I am your servant.

  74. 74

    Forgive our guilt,

  75. 75

and do not reckon the sins of our youth,

  76. 76

for our days are but a shadow.

  77. 77

    Almighty! King!

  78. 78

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

  79. 79

    governs with kindness

  80. 80

forgives the iniquities of His people.

  81. 81

He removes their sins one by one,

  82. 82

    increasing forgiveness to sinners,

  83. 83

    and pardon to transgressors.

  84. 84

    Acting righteously

  85. 85

    עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ.

    with all who are of flesh and spirit;

  86. 86

    not according to their wickedness

  87. 87

    does He repay them.

  88. 88

    Almighty!

  89. 89

    You instructed us to recite

  90. 90

    שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

    the thirteen Divine attributes;

  91. 91

    remember unto us this day

  92. 92

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

  93. 93

    as You made them known

  94. 94

to the humble Moses of old,

  95. 95

    as it is written,

  96. 96

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

  97. 97

    and stood with him there,

  98. 98

    and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

  99. 99

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  100. 100

And Adonoy passed before him [Moses],

  101. 101

    and proclaimed:

  102. 102

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  103. 103

    Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  104. 104

    Slow to Anger,

  105. 105

and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.

  106. 106

    Keeper of kindness

  107. 107

    for thousands of generations,

  108. 108

    Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,

  109. 109

    וְחַטָּאָה

    and sin;

  110. 110

and Acquitter of those who repent.

  111. 111

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  112. 112

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  113. 113

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

  114. 114

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  115. 115

    “For You, my Master,

  116. 116

    are good and forgiving,

  117. 117

    and abounding in kindness

  118. 118

to all who call upon You.”

  119. 119

Adonoy is great and highly extolled

  120. 120

in the city of our God,

  121. 121

    the mountain of His Sanctuary.

  122. 122

    Beautiful in its panoramic vista,

  123. 123

the joy of all the earth is Mount Zion,

  124. 124

on the northern edge [of Jerusalem]

  125. 125

the city of the great King.

  126. 126

Do good as You see fit, to Zion,

  127. 127

may You rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.

  128. 128

Turn away Your anger and Your rage

  129. 129

    from Your city, Jerusalem,

  130. 130

    Your holy mountain.

  131. 131

To recount in Zion, the Name, Adonoy,

  132. 132

    and His praise in Jerusalem.

  133. 133

    And may Adonoy be pleased

  134. 134

with the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem

  135. 135

as in the days of old and in earlier years.

  136. 136

The builder of Jerusalem is Adonoy,

  137. 137

the banished ones of Israel, He will gather.

  138. 138

For Adonoy will not cast off His people,

  139. 139

and His inheritance, He will not abandon.

  140. 140

As a father has compassion on his children

  141. 141

so do You have compassion on us, Adonoy.

  142. 142

    לַיהֹוָה הַיְשׁוּעָה,

    Deliverance is Adonoy’s;

  143. 143

upon Your people is Your blessing. Selah!

  144. 144

Adonoy of Hosts is with us,

  145. 145

a stronghold for us is the God of Jacob. Selah!

  146. 146

    Adonoy of Hosts!

  147. 147

fortunate is the man who trusts in You.

  148. 148

    יְהֹוָה הוֹשִֽׁיעָה,

    Adonoy, deliver us;

  149. 149

the King will answer us on the day we call.

  150. 150

“Please pardon the sins of this nation

  151. 151

    in accordance with the greatness

  152. 152

    חַסְדֶּֽךָ.

    of Your lovingkindness;

  153. 153

and as You forgave this people

  154. 154

from when it left Egypt until now.”

  155. 155

    And there it is said:

  156. 156

    “And Adonoy said,

  157. 157

I have pardoned [them] as you have asked.”

  158. 158

Incline Your ear, my God, and hear,

  159. 159

open Your eyes and behold our desolate places,

  160. 160

    וְהָעִיר אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלֶֽיהָ

    and the city which is called by Your Name;

  161. 161

for it is not on account of our righteousness

  162. 162

that we let fall our supplication before You,

  163. 163

but because of Your great mercy.

  164. 164

My Master, hear! My Master, pardon!

  165. 165

My Master, listen and take action,

  166. 166

    do not delay!

  167. 167

    For Your sake, my God,

  168. 168

    because Your Name is proclaimed

  169. 169

over Your city and over Your people.
