‹›
  1. 1

  2. 2

Our God and God of our fathers!

  3. 3

    [Inhabitants] of Jerusalem, praise Adonoy.

  4. 4

O God, exalted with myriads of [angelic] hosts,

  5. 5

    seeking its welfare

  6. 6

from the beginning to the end [of the year]

  7. 7

    providing it with benevolent rain.

  8. 8

    Your beautiful daughters [without sin]

  9. 9

are like the corner of a king’s palace

  10. 10

    which are adorned with decorations.

  11. 11

Open your mouths and sing together

  12. 12

ruins of Jerusalem [when you are rebuilt].

  13. 13

Let Jerusalem [on earth] be rebuilt

  14. 14

in the form of its twin [in heaven],1See Rashi to Psalms 122:3.

  15. 15

this one and that one was born there2God will reveal the identity of the Jews living in exile.

  16. 16

and He will establish its supremacy.

  17. 17

He will count and inscribe the [sins of] nations

  18. 18

    the awesome One.

  19. 19

    Remember Adonoy, the people Edom,

  20. 20

    the day they destroyed Jerusalem.

  21. 21

    Jerusalem, shield

  22. 22

and save her for a balm and cure.

  23. 23

Be a canopy of honor for her,

  24. 24

    You, Who measures

  25. 25

    the depths with Your footsteps

  26. 26

protect her as birds who fly on high3Who need no protection from man.

  27. 27

    so should Adonoy of Hosts

  28. 28

    protect Jerusalem.

  29. 29

    Jerusalem, no one seeks you

  30. 30

those who loved you have forgotten you—

  31. 31

    and no longer seek you.

  32. 32

Your advisors have ceased to exist.

  33. 33

    Let Your promise be fulfilled:

  34. 34

    “I shall return your judges,

  35. 35

    because who will be merciful

  36. 36

upon you, Jerusalem, [except for God].”

  37. 37

    Jerusalem, mountains surround it.

  38. 38

As the walls of a fortress.

  39. 39

    So, Adonoy envelopes His people,

  40. 40

He Who is the founder of the world.

  41. 41

    Cast asunder the fastidious nations

  42. 42

so that they can no longer stand

  43. 43

and rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.

  44. 44

    Jerusalem and Your people

  45. 45

became a disgrace amongst the nations.

  46. 46

They were cast into terror and fear.

  47. 47

    O’ wall of Jerusalem,

  48. 48

shed your tears like a river

  49. 49

over the cities of your holiness

  50. 50

which became desolate and full of fear.

  51. 51

Zion becomes a ruin like a desert

  52. 52

like a desert [and so, too] Jerusalem.

  53. 53

Jerusalem, remember the days of destruction,

  54. 54

    when you were defiled.

  55. 55

In a group you can no longer

  56. 56

come and go [up to Jerusalem].4For the festivals.

  57. 57

    Why do You not see

  58. 58

    Your weary inheritance?

  59. 59

Until when will You not have mercy

  60. 60

    upon Jerusalem?

  61. 61

The inhabitants of Jerusalem have sinned

  62. 62

    and therefore have become wanderous.

  63. 63

Bring relief to Israel who sits abandoned—

  64. 64

how are You able to witness her destruction?

  65. 65

Then it will again become sweet to Adonoy

  66. 66

the sacrifices of Judah and Jerusalem.

  67. 67

    Jerusalem,

  68. 68

    until when will your defilement

  69. 69

continue to remain in your midst.

  70. 70

    They5The nations. consider as defiled

  71. 71

    even your elders and rabbis.

  72. 72

Iniquity and hidden sin, you do in secret

  73. 73

Wash your heart from iniquity, Jerusalem.

  74. 74

    Jerusalem,

  75. 75

let those who love you live in peace

  76. 76

and let your ruins be rebuilt,

  77. 77

for which formerly you were praised

  78. 78

by people from afar and from near.

  79. 79

    Let the prophecy be fulfilled,

  80. 80

    for good deliverance:

  81. 81

    that elderly people will again

  82. 82

reside in the streets of Jerusalem.

  83. 83

Let Jerusalem be called the throne of God

  84. 84

    in the coming times.

  85. 85

The precious stone (the Temple’s foundation)

  86. 86

will be recognized by throngs for its grace

  87. 87

when all Israel comes to be seen

  88. 88

when they beseech Adonoy of Hosts

  89. 89

    [for His kindness] in Jerusalem.

  90. 90

    Let Jerusalem dwell confidently

  91. 91

    and become a treasured land,

  92. 92

her children were exhausted in exile

  93. 93

    as they went into captivity.

  94. 94

Bring Israel back to its city,

  95. 95

    as the prophet spoke,

  96. 96

“Shake the dust off yourself, arise

  97. 97

    and return to Jerusalem.”

  98. 98

    Jerusalem, its tremendous population

  99. 99

will cause people to live in open cities.

  100. 100

On that day you will be saved

  101. 101

    and returned to your land,

  102. 102

    after being forsaken and despised.

  103. 103

Don the clothes of your glory, O Jerusalem.

  104. 104

    Jerusalem, enemies have besieged you

  105. 105

to kindle the flame of altercation.

  106. 106

This was caused by your hidden evil inclination

  107. 107

which induced you to worship strange gods.

  108. 108

    Adonoy should rebuke you, Satan,

  109. 109

    He Who chooses Jerusalem.

  110. 110

    And Adonoy should rebuke you,

  111. 111

    He Who chooses Jerusalem.

  112. 112

Jerusalem, rejoice with her6When Satan is rebuked.

  113. 113

    all those who love her,

  114. 114

The children of Jacob and Joseph.7See Rashi, Amos 5:15.

  115. 115

Do not remain silent from prayer

  116. 116

until He rebuilds the Holy Temple

  117. 117

and says: “Awaken, awaken8From the stupor of your exile.

  118. 118

    rise up Jerusalem.”

  119. 119

Jerusalem, city of the Holy Sanctuary,

  120. 120

you are satiated with bitter grass—

  121. 121

    because you denigrated His commandments

  122. 122

and the decree of reciprocity prevailed.

  123. 123

Your King, however, will still be for you

  124. 124

as a support in the coming days.

  125. 125

For the sake of the honor of Zion

  126. 126

I will not remain silent, [says God,]

  127. 127

and for the sake of Jerusalem.

  128. 128

    Jerusalem, (heed my rebuke)

  129. 129

lest My soul become detached from you,

  130. 130

    says the Most High.

  131. 131

There will yet be a time

  132. 132

when He will rule with His good will.

  133. 133

On that day the moon will be embarrassed

  134. 134

and the sun will be ashamed

  135. 135

due to their dim light9That will not shine upon the nations because of the many retributions that will be inflicted upon them.

  136. 136

because Adonoy of Hosts will rule

  137. 137

    on Mount Zion and Jerusalem.

  138. 138

Jerusalem, raise your voice in song

  139. 139

    for beauty and glory.

  140. 140

Don your strength and garment of glory.

  141. 141

    Open your mouth in song

  142. 142

and sing the prescribed song of the prophet:

  143. 143

    “Raise your voice with power!”

  144. 144

Heralds of the redemption of Jerusalem.

  145. 145

    Jerusalem will again become holy

  146. 146

and strangers will no longer traverse her.

  147. 147

    The cup of poison

  148. 148

    you will no longer drink.

  149. 149

    your path will become sure

  150. 150

and your steps will not stumble.

  151. 151

    God will then comfort Zion

  152. 152

and again choose Jerusalem [as His city].10See Isaiah ch. 66, v. 23.

  153. 153

    Jerusalem, sing and rejoice

  154. 154

    with a new song

  155. 155

and the Holy Temple11Referred to as “livanon” since it “whitens” the sins of Israel.

  156. 156

    will become exalted and supreme

  157. 157

    when all people will come

  158. 158

    each month

  159. 159

    and bow down to God

  160. 160

on the holy mountain in Jerusalem.

  161. 161

    Jerusalem has become desolate

  162. 162

and its cities destroyed because of my sins.

  163. 163

    Cast her sins

  164. 164

into the depths of the turbulent waters

  165. 165

and then raise her to the heights

  166. 166

in the merit of the righteous patriarchs.

  167. 167

The nations will then flock to her

  168. 168

    in the Name of Adonoy,

  169. 169

    to Jerusalem.

  170. 170

    Jerusalem,

  171. 171

let it be praised in the land,

  172. 172

even among the residents of [distant] isles.

  173. 173

Gifts and presentations will be brought

  174. 174

by Shva, Sva and the Kutites.

  175. 175

    Come deliver us

  176. 176

    and redeem us from captivity.

  177. 177

    On that day

  178. 178

    flowing spring waters will emanate

  179. 179

    from Jerusalem.

  180. 180

The city of Jerusalem [we will]

  181. 181

raise her to the forefront of all rejoicing,

  182. 182

because of the light of Your Divine Presence.

  183. 183

    Restore the songs of Zion

  184. 184

with song of the Holy Temple.12The songs sung by the Levites.

  207. 207

to the humble Moses of old,

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  213. 213

and Acquitter of those who repent.

  224. 224

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  225. 225

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  226. 226

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  228. 228

    “For You, my Master,

  229. 229

    are good and forgiving,

  230. 230

    and abounding in kindness

  231. 231

to all who call upon You.”

  232. 232

    The [correct] offerings to God—

  233. 233

    a broken spirit,

  234. 234

    לֵב־נִשְׁבָּר וְנִדְכֶּה

    a broken and humbled heart;

  235. 235

    God, [You] will not despise.

  236. 236

    Then will You desire

  237. 237

    the sacrifices of righteousness,

  238. 238

    עוֹלָה וְכָלִיל

    burnt offerings and whole offerings;

  239. 239

bullocks will then be offered upon Your altar.

  240. 240

    And the kindness of Adonoy

  241. 241

    is forever and ever

  242. 242

    upon those who fear Him,

  243. 243

    and His righteousness

  244. 244

    upon children’s children.

  245. 245

    And He said,

  246. 246

“I have sworn by Myself,” declares Adonoy

  247. 247

    “that because you performed

  248. 248

    this deed

  249. 249

    and did not withhold

  250. 250

    your only son.”

  251. 251

As a father has compassion on his children

  252. 252

so do You have compassion on us, Adonoy.

  253. 253

    לַיהֹוָה הַיְשׁוּעָה,

    Deliverance is Adonoy’s;

  254. 254

upon Your people is Your blessing. Selah!

  255. 255

Adonoy of Hosts is with us,

  256. 256

a stronghold for us is the God of Jacob. Selah!

  257. 257

    Adonoy of Hosts!

  258. 258

fortunate is the man who trusts in You.

  259. 259

    יְהֹוָה הוֹשִֽׁיעָה,

    Adonoy, deliver us;

  260. 260

the King will answer us on the day we call.

  261. 261

“Please pardon the sins of this nation

  262. 262

    in accordance with the greatness

  263. 263

    חַסְדֶּֽךָ.

    of Your lovingkindness;

  264. 264

and as You forgave this people

  265. 265

from when it left Egypt until now.”

  266. 266

    And there it is said:

  267. 267

    “And Adonoy said,

  268. 268

I have pardoned [them] as you have asked.”

  269. 269

Incline Your ear, my God, and hear,

  270. 270

open Your eyes and behold our desolate places,

  271. 271

    וְהָעִיר אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלֶֽיהָ

    and the city which is called by Your Name;

  272. 272

for it is not on account of our righteousness

  273. 273

that we let fall our supplication before You,

  274. 274

but because of Your great mercy.

  275. 275

My Master, hear! My Master, pardon!

  276. 276

My Master, listen and take action,

  277. 277

    do not delay!

  278. 278

    For Your sake, my God,

  279. 279

    because Your Name is proclaimed

  280. 280

over Your city and over Your people.
