with words of virtue [concerning Israel].

  5. 5

    Perhaps, He will spare

  6. 6

    this poor and needy people.

  7. 7

    perhaps He will be compassionate.

  8. 8

    Perhaps He will be compassionate

  9. 9

with the remnant of Joseph,16See Amos 5:16.

  10. 10

who are lowly and disgraced, torn to pieces,

  11. 11

    שְׁבוּיֵי חִנָּם מְכוּרֵי בְּלֹא־כֶסֶף.

    innocent captives, sold without compensation;

  12. 12

    they cry out in prayer

  13. 13

seeking permission [to enter His Presence].

  14. 14

    Perhaps [then] He will spare

  15. 15

    this poor and needy people,

  16. 16

    perhaps He will be compassionate.

  17. 17

    Perhaps He will be compassionate

  18. 18

toward those who are afflicted in chains,

  19. 19

    accustomed to beatings—enduring oppression,

  20. 20

    the subject of head-shaking

  21. 21

    בְּיוֹשְׁבֵי תֵבֵל.

    among the nations;

  22. 22

a byword among peoples, of anger and shame.

  23. 23

    Perhaps [then] He will spare

  24. 24

    this poor and needy people,

  25. 25

    perhaps He will be compassionate.

  26. 26

    Perhaps He will be compassionate

  27. 27

and see the affliction of His people,

  28. 28

    וְיַקְשֵׁב וְיִשְׁמַע הַצָּגִים לְעֻמּוֹ.

    and listen to those who pray to Him;

  29. 29

they gather to offer silent prayer

  30. 30

    amid their suffering,

  31. 31

their eyes look to Him, hoping for favor.

  32. 32

    Perhaps [then] He will spare

  33. 33

    this poor and needy people,

  34. 34

    perhaps He will be compassionate.

  35. 35

    Perhaps He will be compassionate

  36. 36

toward those who say “Please pardon us,”

  37. 37

who vigorously praise Him at all times,

  38. 38

who band together in times of trouble

  39. 39

    לִשְׁפֹּךְ תְּחִנָּה.

    to pour out supplications;

  40. 40

in the Presence of their God,

  41. 41

they pour out their weak hearts.

  42. 42

    Perhaps [then] He will spare

  43. 43

    this poor and needy people,

  44. 44

    perhaps He will be compassionate.

  45. 45

    Perhaps He will be compassionate

  46. 46

upon those who have been doubly smitten,

  47. 47

swallowed by lions [enemies of Israel],

  48. 48

even in the mouth of small lions

  49. 49

    smitten [by God] and punished

  50. 50

    for their conspicuous iniquities;17See Lamentations 1:9—טוּמֽאָתָה בְּשׁוּלֶיהָ

  51. 51

    yet, she has not forgotten

  52. 52

    the Torah.18See Rashi to Habakuk 3:4—חֶבְיוֹן עוּזוֹ.

  53. 53

    Perhaps [then] He will spare

  54. 54

    this poor and needy people,

  55. 55

    perhaps He will be compassionate.

  56. 56

    Perhaps He will be compassionate

  57. 57

upon those who hide their faces [in shame],

  58. 58

    who listen to their degradation

  59. 59

    וְלֹא־מְשִׁיבִים וְעוֹנִים.

    and do not reply or argue;

  60. 60

to Him Who is eternal they hope,

  61. 61

and upon His deliverance they depend,

  62. 62

for His mercy is never absolutely withheld.

  63. 63

    Perhaps [then] He will spare

  64. 64

    this poor and needy people,

  65. 65

    perhaps He will be compassionate.

  66. 66

    Perhaps He will be compassionate

  67. 67

to strengthen one, oppressed in poverty,

  68. 68

release the captive from his land of captivity,

  69. 69

remove his pain and heal his sickness,

  70. 70

    hear his cry

  71. 71

and hasten the time of redemption.

  72. 72

    Perhaps [then] He will spare

  73. 73

    this poor and needy people,

  74. 74

    perhaps He will be compassionate.

  75. 75

    Almighty! King!

  76. 76

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

  77. 77

    governs with kindness

  78. 78

forgives the iniquities of His people.

  79. 79

He removes their sins one by one,

  80. 80

    increasing forgiveness to sinners,

  81. 81

    and pardon to transgressors.

  82. 82

    Acting righteously

  83. 83

    עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ.

    with all who are of flesh and spirit;

  84. 84

    not according to their wickedness

  85. 85

    does He repay them.

  86. 86

    Almighty!

  87. 87

    You instructed us to recite

  88. 88

    שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

    the thirteen Divine attributes;

  89. 89

    remember unto us this day

  90. 90

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

  91. 91

    as You made them known

  92. 92

to the humble Moses of old,

  93. 93

    as it is written,

  94. 94

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

  95. 95

    and stood with him there,

  96. 96

    and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

  97. 97

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  98. 98

    וַיַּֽעֲבֹר יְהֹוָה עַל פָּנָיו

    And Adonoy passed before him [Moses];

  99. 99

    and proclaimed:

  100. 100

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  101. 101

    Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  102. 102

    Slow to Anger,

  103. 103

and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.

  104. 104

    Keeper of kindness

  105. 105

    for thousands of generations,

  106. 106

    Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,

  107. 107

    וְחַטָּאָה

    and sin;

  108. 108

and Acquitter of those who repent.”

  109. 109

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  110. 110

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  111. 111

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

  112. 112

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  113. 113

    “For You, my Master,

  114. 114

    are good and forgiving,

  115. 115

    and abounding in kindness

  116. 116

to all who call upon You.”
