Selichot Nusach Lita Linear · Erev Rosh Hashana, Chapter 6

‹›
  1. 1

This prayer was composed by Rabbi Joseph ben Isaac of Orleans (1150).

  2. 2

Our God and god of our fathers!

  3. 3

The needs of Your people are numerous,

  4. 4

but [since] their knowledge is limited—

  5. 5

    their wants and desires

  6. 6

    בַּל יוּכְלוּ לְסַפְּרָה.

    they are unable to recount;

  7. 7

    please [therefore] regard our thoughts

  8. 8

    even before we call.

  9. 9

The Almighty, Great, Powerful and Awesome.

  10. 10

    Utterly extinct are they

  11. 11

that knew how to invoke [You],

  12. 12

    with the order of prayers

  13. 13

    בְּמַעֲנֵה לְשׁוֹנָם לְהַבִּיעָה.

    to express them with eloquence;

  14. 14

we are left bare and evil has increased,

  15. 15

therefore we have not attained deliverance.

  16. 16

    We have not the arrogance

  17. 17

    to approach You with supplication,

  18. 18

    [for] we have transgressed, rebelled,

  19. 19

    וְהֶעֱוִינוּ מְסִלּוֹת.

    and perverted our ways;

  20. 20

Your charitable benevolence is all we ask

  21. 21

as we set forth Your praise,

  22. 22

we who stand in the House of God, nightly.

  23. 23

    Holy One, behold!

  24. 24

how the capable advocate is extinct,

  25. 25

    accept my words [of prayer]

  26. 26

    כְּמַרְבִּית תְּשׁוּרָה.

    as if it were a generous offering;

  27. 27

    רִנָּתִי הַיּוֹם

    let my praise today

  28. 28

    be fastened to Your crown,

  29. 29

    Almighty, girded with might.

  30. 30

    Regard my plea

  31. 31

and may my prayer be pleasant [before You],

  32. 32

hear my prayer as if it were perfect,

  33. 33

decree for us a good life,

  34. 34

    and make good for us

  35. 35

    the inscription and seal.

  36. 36

You suspend the earth on nothingness.

  37. 37

    Stretch out Your hand

  38. 38

and accept my repentance as I stand,5Before You.

  39. 39

please pardon and forgive my evil deeds.

  40. 40

    Please turn and occupy Yourself

  41. 41

with the welfare of those who seek You,

  42. 42

    דּוֹדִי וּמְעוֹדְדִי.

    my friend and my support;

  43. 43

for You, Adonoy, are a shield about me.

  44. 44

Do not despise my words of praise,

  45. 45

    I have exalted Your majesty

  46. 46

    כְּפִי מִעוּט שִׂכְלִי.

    according to my limited wisdom;

  47. 47

fulfill for good my desire and my request

  48. 48

God, my Master, is my strength.

  49. 49

Let my words be pleasant [before You]

  50. 50

and be receptive to my prayer,

  51. 51

add to my account [of merit]

  52. 52

every word [of praise and prayer],

  53. 53

Holy One, regard my standing [in prayer]

  54. 54

as a meal-offering mixed with oil.

  55. 55

Give ear, God of Jacob, forever.

  56. 56

    Almighty! King!

  57. 57

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

  58. 58

    governs with kindness

  59. 59

forgives the iniquities of His people.

  60. 60

He removes their sins one by one,

  61. 61

    increasing forgiveness to sinners,

  62. 62

    and pardon to transgressors.

  63. 63

    Acting righteously

  64. 64

    עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ.

    with all who are of flesh and spirit;

  65. 65

    not according to their wickedness

  66. 66

    does He repay them.

  67. 67

    Almighty!

  68. 68

    You instructed us to recite

  69. 69

    שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

    the thirteen Divine attributes;

  70. 70

    remember unto us this day

  71. 71

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

  72. 72

    as You made them known

  73. 73

to the humble Moses of old,

  74. 74

    as it is written,

  75. 75

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

  76. 76

    and stood with him there,

  77. 77

    and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

  78. 78

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  79. 79

And Adonoy passed before him [Moses],

  80. 80

    and proclaimed:

  81. 81

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  82. 82

    Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  83. 83

    Slow to Anger,

  84. 84

and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.

  85. 85

    Keeper of kindness

  86. 86

    for thousands of generations,

  87. 87

    Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,

  88. 88

    וְחַטָּאָה

    and sin;

  89. 89

and Acquitter of those who repent.

  90. 90

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  91. 91

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  92. 92

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

  93. 93

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  94. 94

    “For You, my Master,

  95. 95

    are good and forgiving,

  96. 96

    and abounding in kindness

  97. 97

to all who call upon You.”

  98. 98

Do not enter into judgement with us

  99. 99

for no living soul will be justified before You.

  100. 100

Give ear, Adonoy, to our prayer

  101. 101

listen to the voice of our supplication.

  102. 102

What can we say before You, Adonoy, our God

  103. 103

    what can we speak

  104. 104

and how can we justify ourselves?

  105. 105

We have sinned, as have our fathers,

  106. 106

we have caused others to sin,

  107. 107

and we have caused others to do evil.

  108. 108

The sins and transgressions of our youth,

  109. 109

    do not recall.

  110. 110

    According to Your kindness

  111. 111

    should You remember us,

  112. 112

    for the sake of Adonoy.

  113. 113

As a father has compassion on his children

  114. 114

so do You have compassion on us, Adonoy.

  115. 115

    לַיהֹוָה הַיְשׁוּעָה,

    Deliverance is Adonoy’s;

  116. 116

upon Your people is Your blessing. Selah!

  117. 117

Adonoy of Hosts is with us,

  118. 118

a stronghold for us is the God of Jacob. Selah!

  119. 119

    Adonoy of Hosts!

  120. 120

fortunate is the man who trusts in You.

  121. 121

    יְהֹוָה הוֹשִֽׁיעָה,

    Adonoy, deliver us;

  122. 122

the King will answer us on the day we call.

  123. 123

“Please pardon the sins of this nation

  124. 124

    in accordance with the greatness

  125. 125

    חַסְדֶּֽךָ.

    of Your lovingkindness;

  126. 126

and as You forgave this people

  127. 127

from when it left Egypt until now.”

  128. 128

    And there it is said:

  129. 129

    “And Adonoy said,

  130. 130

I have pardoned [them] as you have asked.”

  131. 131

Incline Your ear, my God, and hear,

  132. 132

open Your eyes and behold our desolate places,

  133. 133

    וְהָעִיר אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלֶֽיהָ

    and the city which is called by Your Name;

  134. 134

for it is not on account of our righteousness

  135. 135

that we let fall our supplication before You,

  136. 136

but because of Your great mercy.

  137. 137

My Master, hear! My Master, pardon!

  138. 138

My Master, listen and take action,

  139. 139

    do not delay!

  140. 140

    For Your sake, my God,

  141. 141

    because Your Name is proclaimed

  142. 142

over Your city and over Your people.
