Selichot Nusach Lita Linear · Erev Rosh Hashana, Chapter 8

‹›
  1. 1

This prayer was composed by Rabbi Joel ben Isaac HaLevi.

  2. 2

Our God and God of our fathers!

  3. 3

My eye pours out tears to God

  4. 4

when I cry to You, say, “I am here;”

  5. 5

give ear to my words when I pray,

  6. 6

    Answer me God, answer me.

  7. 7

When You weigh my actions on the scale,

  8. 8

[You will see] that in Your commandments,

  9. 9

my share and desire is insignificant,

  10. 10

and if You reward me according to my work

  11. 11

I am afraid, for I am bare [of good deeds].

  12. 12

Banish and consume, sin and rebellion

  13. 13

uncover the flask of healing, [heal my soul]

  14. 14

    וְעָנְתָה־בִּי צִדְקָתִי

    let [only] my righteousness testify

  15. 15

    before my Creator,

  16. 16

    tomorrow [Rosh Hashana]

  17. 17

when You come to decide my recompense.

  18. 18

    Wash away the stain

  19. 19

and whiten the redness [of sin].

  20. 20

Consider that their origin is dust,

  21. 21

repay them not according to their deeds

  22. 22

for great is the wickedness of man.

  23. 23

The sinful soul, how can it be atoned?

  24. 24

Riches are of no avail, nor great ransom

  25. 25

for You have set as witness [Satan]

  26. 26

    who is quick to testify

  27. 27

to our sins, committed inside and outside.

  28. 28

How can one deny [his] guilt

  29. 29

    when his own hand lists

  30. 30

his perverse deeds and all his activities,

  31. 31

    and how can he say:

  32. 32

“Who knows the count [of my misdeeds]?”

  33. 33

When the plague is engraved on the wall.11When his sins are obvious.

  34. 34

The pure [angels] who accompany you

  35. 35

    in every region,

  36. 36

who are alert to guard you

  37. 37

    בְּכָל אֲשֶׁר תֵּלֵךְ.

    wherever you go;

  38. 38

even [the soul] that lies within man

  39. 39

testifies against rich and poor alike

  40. 40

when it stands before the King.12Each evening the soul returns to Heaven and reports man’s activities.

  41. 41

I tremble, for nothing is hidden from Him,

  42. 42

Who relates to man his every word,

  43. 43

and even his thoughts as he lies on his bed.

  44. 44

He must give an accounting to His Creator.

  45. 45

Before your feet stumble [before death]

  46. 46

[when your] pledge [the soul is returned]

  47. 47

    cleanse yourself from all iniquity,

  48. 48

because you will not be saved

  49. 49

by all the wealth you leave behind,

  50. 50

when the Ruler says, “Come, give account.”

  51. 51

You appointed four periods13See Mesechet Rosh Hashana 16a. and set them

  52. 52

to judge the remnant of Your inheritance,

  53. 53

and if they have trespassed against You

  54. 54

regard the covenant [with the Patriarchs]

  55. 55

and do not stand in the crossway

  56. 56

    to cut them off.

  57. 57

For on the day of Rosh Hashana14See Metsudah T’hillim page 165 note 4.

  58. 58

    every man’s fate comes

  59. 59

    before his Creator,

  60. 60

be he poor or rich, he is judged,

  61. 61

some go up and some go down.

  62. 62

Appoint a just advocate for Your people,

  63. 63

    when all mankind come

  64. 64

to be counted with Your rod,

  65. 65

like a flock of sheep passing by

  66. 66

the hand of one who counts them.

  67. 67

Let Your people’s judgement be first.15Before the Almighty is angered by the other nations.

  68. 68

    Lift their souls from destruction,

  69. 69

    assure them of goodness,

  70. 70

and judge each nation by itself,

  71. 71

let there not be an inter-mixture.

  72. 72

    Illustrious God,

  73. 73

who can be associated with You?

  74. 74

    Ordinarily

  75. 75

no one uses a broken vessel,

  76. 76

    but You do not despise

  77. 77

    לֵב נִדְכֶּה וְנִשְׁבָּר.

    a humble and broken heart;

  78. 78

is anything too miraculous for Adonoy?

  79. 79

Clear away the stumbling block16The Evil Inclination.

  80. 80

that the path may become smooth,

  81. 81

    “Depart you unclean one!”

  82. 82

call out to the concealed fool,

  83. 83

    כִּי אֵין־הַצָּר בְּנֶזֶק שֹׁוֶה.

    for the enemy cares not of our hurt;

  84. 84

come let us deal wisely with him,

  85. 85

    lest he become too mighty.

  86. 86

    Man serves two masters

  87. 87

during the years of his life,

  88. 88

doing the will of his Creator

  89. 89

    וּלְיִצְרוֹ כִּרְצוֹנָיו.

    or serving his [evil] inclination;

  90. 90

but well for him who clings to his Creator

  91. 91

    all of his [life] time,

  92. 92

then he is a servant free from his master.17The Evil Inclination.

  93. 93

He who prepares his meal before evening,

  94. 94

he who works in this [world]

  95. 95

    וְלַבָּא יְהִי נָכוֹן.

    will be prepared for the future [world];

  96. 96

but he who waits for the Sabbath,18When death approaches.

  97. 97

what gain will he have?19This is a paraphrase of the saying, “He who prepares before the Sabbath, will have what to eat on the Sabbath.”

  98. 98

    That which is crooked

  99. 99

    cannot be made straight.20Koheles 1:15.

  100. 100

Therefore, we hasten to pray even before

  101. 101

    לְיוֹם הַדִּין, וְתַקְשִׁיב.

    the Day of Judgement, listen to our prayer;

  102. 102

    fasting and whole-hearted repentance

  103. 103

    will turn away Your wrath,

  104. 104

    but not [like the dog]

  105. 105

    which returns to his vomit

  106. 106

    to sin again and repent,

  107. 107

for no opportunity will be given him

  108. 108

    to repent.

  109. 109

Rise you who sleep in the cave of Machpelah,21The Patriarchs.

  110. 110

    and help me,

  111. 111

I am disgraced, and I have no good deeds,

  112. 112

cry out and pray to God, with me,

  113. 113

and from the strength [of your deeds]

  114. 114

offer a gratuity on my behalf.

  115. 115

    Arouse Your mercy

  116. 116

to strengthen those that are powerless,

  117. 117

    Exalted One, [do it]

  118. 118

for they were forgotten these many years,

  119. 119

    open the gates of tears

  120. 120

    for [Your] beautiful plants [Israel],

  121. 121

who come weeping and supplicating [to You].

  122. 122

Almighty One, because of our rebellion,

  123. 123

    we are considered strangers,

  124. 124

but now that we return to You

  125. 125

    וּכְאָב עַל־בֵּן תְּרַחֲמֵנוּ:

    have mercy on us as a father on his sons;

  126. 126

remember that You called us children,

  127. 127

and You are the one Father of us all,

  128. 128

why diminish the Name of our Father?

  129. 129

I have no offering to present to You,

  130. 130

in exchange accept my prayer and plea,

  131. 131

    please accept the present

  132. 132

    that goes before me,

  133. 133

and let all these people know

  134. 134

    that You are Adonoy.

  135. 135

    You made known and ordained

  136. 136

repentance even before creation,22God knew that the world could not exist without repentance.

  137. 137

God considered it a benefit [to man],

  138. 138

    בְּכֵן רַצְנוּ עָדֶיךָ לָשׁוּבָה.

    and so we hasten to return to You;

  139. 139

cause us to return to You Adonoy

  140. 140

    and we shall return.

  141. 141

    Your loved ones cry out,

  142. 142

they beseech You with great murmuring,

  143. 143

let their voice be heard in His Dwelling,

  144. 144

    מִמְּרוֹמִים.

    from on high;

  145. 145

    may His mercy be aroused

  146. 146

in the merit of the three Patriarchs,

  147. 147

may Almighty God grant you mercy.

  148. 148

    Almighty! King!

  149. 149

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

  150. 150

    governs with kindness

  151. 151

forgives the iniquities of His people.

  152. 152

He removes their sins one by one,

  153. 153

    increasing forgiveness to sinners,

  154. 154

    and pardon to transgressors.

  155. 155

    Acting righteously

  156. 156

    עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ.

    with all who are of flesh and spirit;

  157. 157

    not according to their wickedness

  158. 158

    does He repay them.

  159. 159

    Almighty!

  160. 160

    You instructed us to recite

  161. 161

    שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

    the thirteen Divine attributes;

  162. 162

    remember unto us this day

  163. 163

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

  164. 164

    as You made them known

  165. 165

to the humble Moses of old,

  166. 166

    as it is written,

  167. 167

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

  168. 168

    and stood with him there,

  169. 169

    and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

  170. 170

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  171. 171

And Adonoy passed before him [Moses],

  172. 172

    and proclaimed:

  173. 173

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  174. 174

    Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  175. 175

    Slow to Anger,

  176. 176

and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.

  177. 177

    Keeper of kindness

  178. 178

    for thousands of generations,

  179. 179

    Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,

  180. 180

    וְחַטָּאָה

    and sin;

  181. 181

and Acquitter of those who repent.

  182. 182

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  183. 183

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  184. 184

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

  185. 185

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  186. 186

    “For You, my Master,

  187. 187

    are good and forgiving,

  188. 188

    and abounding in kindness

  189. 189

to all who call upon You.”

  190. 190

The Rock, His work is perfect,

  191. 191

for all His ways are justice.

  192. 192

    Almighty of faithfulness, without iniquity,

  193. 193

    just and right is He.

  194. 194

For Your judgement they stand today,

  195. 195

for they are all Your servants.

  196. 196

Blow the shofar on the new month,

  197. 197

at the appointed time for our festive day.

  198. 198

For it is a statute for Israel,

  199. 199

a day of judgement of the God of Jacob.

  200. 200

    Your righteousness

  201. 201

    is like the mighty mountains,

  202. 202

    מִשְׁפָּטֶךָ תְּהוֹם רַבָּה

    Your judgements like the great deep;

  203. 203

man and beast, You deliver, Adonoy.

  204. 204

As a father has compassion on his children

  205. 205

so do You have compassion on us, Adonoy.

  206. 206

    לַיהֹוָה הַיְשׁוּעָה,

    Deliverance is Adonoy’s;

  207. 207

upon Your people is Your blessing. Selah!

  208. 208

Adonoy of Hosts is with us,

  209. 209

a stronghold for us is the God of Jacob. Selah!

  210. 210

    Adonoy of Hosts!

  211. 211

fortunate is the man who trusts in You.

  212. 212

    יְהֹוָה הוֹשִֽׁיעָה,

    Adonoy, deliver us;

  213. 213

the King will answer us on the day we call.

  214. 214

“Please pardon the sins of this nation

  215. 215

    in accordance with the greatness

  216. 216

    חַסְדֶּֽךָ.

    of Your lovingkindness;

  217. 217

and as You forgave this people

  218. 218

from when it left Egypt until now.”

  219. 219

    And there it is said:

  220. 220

    “And Adonoy said,

  221. 221

I have pardoned [them] as you have asked.”

  222. 222

Incline Your ear, my God, and hear,

  223. 223

open Your eyes and behold our desolate places,

  224. 224

    וְהָעִיר אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלֶֽיהָ

    and the city which is called by Your Name;

  225. 225

for it is not on account of our righteousness

  226. 226

that we let fall our supplication before You,

  227. 227

but because of Your great mercy.

  228. 228

My Master, hear! My Master, pardon!

  229. 229

My Master, listen and take action,

  230. 230

    do not delay!

  231. 231

    For Your sake, my God,

  232. 232

    because Your Name is proclaimed

  233. 233

over Your city and over Your people.
