אֲדוֹנֵי הָאֲדוֹנִים,
Master of masters!
הַשְׁקִיפָה מִמְּעוֹנִים.
Gaze from Your dwelling
וְרַחֵם אֶבְיוֹנִים,
and take pity on the destitute
כְּרַחֵם אָב עַל־בָּנִים.
as a father takes pity on his children,
וּזְכֹר בְּרִית אֱמוּנִים,
and remember the covenant of trust
שִׁבְעָה אֵיתָנִים.
with the seven mighty ones¹I.e. the seven righteous who are about to be enumerated..
וְאַל־תִּזְכָּר־לָנוּ
And do not remind us
עֲווֹנוֹת רִאשׁוֹנִים:
of our earlier iniquities.
זְכֹר בְּרִית אֶזְרָח,
Remember the covenant with Abraham²I.e. Abraham who was known as אֶזְרָחִי.
אֲשֶׁר בֵּין־חוֹחִים פָּרַח.
who bloomed amongst the thorns
וּמִפְּאַת הַמִּזְרָח,
and from the East
כְּצֵאת הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ זָרַח.
[his name] shone like the sun,
וּמֵאַרְצוֹ בָרַח,
and from his land he escaped
וְאַחֲרֶיךָ אֵל אָרַח.
and he followed after You, God,
וּלְשִׁמְךָ צָרַח,
and to Your Name he cried out
וְהוּא בֶּן־שָׁלֹשׁ שָׁנִים:
when he was [only] three years old.
וְאַל תִּזְכָּר־לָנוּ
And do not remind us
עֲווֹנוֹת רִאשׁוֹנִים:
of our earlier iniquities.
זְכֹר בְּרִית אִישׁ חֲמוּדוֹ,
Remember the covenant with his desired [son]³I.e. Abraham’s beloved son, Isaac.
אֲשֶׁר לְפָנֶיךָ עֲקָדוֹ.
that he bound⁴As a sacrifice. before You,
וְשָׁלַח אֶת יָדוֹ,
and stretched forth his hand
בְּמַאֲכֶלֶת שְׁחֹט יְחִידוֹ.
for the knife to slaughter his only son,
וּפִדְיוֹן שָׂם בַּעֲדוֹ,
and, then, put a redemption in his place,
אַיִל עוֹלָה בְמַעֲמָדוֹ.
a ram as a burnt-offering in his stead.
וְזַרְעוֹ
[Therefore,] his children,
צוּר הוֹדוֹ,
for whom God, the Rock, is their splendor,
פְּדֵה הַיּוֹם מִזֵּדוֹנִים:
redeem, today, from their wickedness.
וְאַל תִּזְכָּר־לָנוּ
And do not remind us
עֲווֹנוֹת רִאשׁוֹנִים:
of our earlier iniquities.
זְכֹר בְּרִית אִישׁ תָּמִים.
Remember the covenant of the complete one⁵Jacob, whom the Torah calls אִישׁ תַּם—complete man.
בָּרַח מֵאִישׁ דָּמִים.
who escaped from a man of blood.⁶‘Man of blood’—Esau, the murderer.
בְּסֻלָּם מִמְּרוֹמִים.
With a ladder from on high⁷I.e. Jacob dreamt of a ladder extending from earth to the heavens..
בִּשַּׂרְתּוֹ נִחוּמִים,
You foretold to him words of consolation⁸That his descendants would inherit Eretz Yisrael.
וְשָׂרָה אֶת עֲצוּמִים.
and he overpowered the powerful⁹He defeated the angel in battle.
וּמָצָא חֶסֶד וְרַחֲמִים.
and he found kindness and compassion.
וְהַעֲבֵר נָא כְתָמִים.
[Therefore,] please remove the stains
וְהַלְבֵּן כַּשֶּׁלֶג שָׁנִים.
and cleanse as snow the red [thread].¹⁰The red thread tied to the goat turned white as a sign of forgiveness.
וְאַל תִּזְכָּר־לָנוּ
And do not remind us
עֲווֹנוֹת רִאשׁוֹנִים:
of our earlier iniquities.
זְכֹר בְּרִית אִישׁ עָנָו,
Remember the covenant with the humble one¹¹I.e. Moses.
וְאֶת דַּל הֶגְיוֹנָיו.
and the Law of his meditations¹²I.e. the Torah.
וְלִקְהִלּוֹת הֲמוֹנָיו,
[taught] to the great masses,
וְאֶת דַּת חֶזְיוֹנָיו.
and the Law of his visions.¹²I.e. the Torah.
נוֹרָא בְעֶלְיוֹנָיו,
He was feared in His heavens,¹³I.e. even the angels feared Moses.
כְּבוֹדְךָ רָאוּ עֵינָיו.
and he witnessed Your splendor.
וּזְכוֹר זֹאת אֲדֹנָיו,
[Therefore,] remember this, his Master
יְדָעוֹ פָּנִים בְּפָנִים:
Whom he knew face to face.¹⁴Moses reached the highest possible human understanding of God.
וְאַל תִּזְכָּר־לָנוּ
And do not remind us
עֲווֹנוֹת רִאשׁוֹנִים:
of our earlier iniquities.
זְכֹר בְּרִית שְׁלוּחֶךָ,
Remember the covenant with Your messenger,
מְכַהֵן בִּמנוּחֶךָ.
who served as priest in Your dwelling¹⁵The tabernacle; a reference to Aaron, the priest.
וְשָׂם עוֹלוֹת מֵחֶיךָ,
and placed robust burnt-offerings
לְרֵיחַ נִיחֹוחֶךָ.
for a pleasant aroma for You;
וְתִמּוּר רִקּוּחֶךָ,
and the smoke of Your spices
כָּלִיל עַל מִזְבְּחֶךָ.
consumed on Your Altar.
וְעָלָיו נָחָה רוּחֶךָ,
Upon him Your spirit rested
בְּבוֹאוֹ לִפְנַי וְלִפְנִים:
when he entered the innermost chamber.¹⁶The High Priest entered the Holy of Holies on Yom Kippur.
וְאַל תִּזְכָּר־לָנוּ
And do not remind us
עֲווֹנוֹת רִאשׁוֹנִים:
of our earlier iniquities.
זְכֹר בְּרִית
Remember the covenant
תָּם בִּלְבָבוֹ,
with the loyal-hearted,¹⁷King David.
נָגִיד בָּחַרְתָּ בוֹ.
whom You chose as a ruler.
אֲשֶׁר מִכָּל סְבִיבוֹ,
Whom, from all his surroundings
הִנַּחְתּוֹ מֵאוֹיְבוֹ.
You gave him rest from his enemies.
וְרוּחֲךָ אֵל שִׂגְּבוֹ,
Your spirit, God, strengthened him
בְּעָמְדוֹ לָצֵאת וְלָבוֹא.
when he rose to go and come.¹⁸‘Go and Come’—when he went to battle and returned.
יְקַדְּמוּךָ בְּנִיבוֹ,
Let them come before You with his utterances¹⁹David’s psalms.
כַּמֶּה שָׁרִים וְנוֹגְנִים.
the poets and the singers.
וְאַל תִּזְכָּר־לָנוּ
And do not remind us
עֲווֹנוֹת רִאשׁוֹנִים:
of our earlier iniquities.
זְכֹר הַבְּרִית הַמְקַנֵּא,
Remember the covenant with the zealous one²⁰I.e. Pinchas (v. Numbers 25 v. 11, 12).
לְדוֹר עִקֵּשׁ מִתְאַנֶּה.
who quarreled with a stubborn generation.
וְהֶעֱלִיתוֹ מְמֻנֶּה,
[Therefore,] you elevated and appointed him
לִמְּבַשֵּׂר
to be the bearer of good tidings²¹I.e. our Sages tell us that Pinhas and Elijah are one.
וּמְפַנֶּה.
and to prepare [the way for the Messiah].
וְעִם עֲלוֹת וּמְעֻנֶּה,
And because of his pain and suffering²²‘Pain and suffering’ Elijah suffers the pain of our exile.
אֵלָיו לְטוֹב תִּפְנֶה.
turn to him for good
וּשְׁעֵה
and turn towards
עָם מְכֻנֶּה,
those who are called [Your] nation,
בְּרַחֲמֶיךָ נִשְׁעָנִים:
who are supported by Your compassion.
וְאַל תִּזְכָּר־לָנוּ
And do not remind us
עֲווֹנוֹת רִאשׁוֹנִים:
of our earlier iniquities.
זְכֹר
Remember the one
נְבִיאֵי־שָׁוְא הִכְרִית,
who destroyed the false prophets²³Elijah.
הִסְתַּרְתּוֹ בְנַחַל כְּרִית.
and You hid him in Nachal Kris.²⁴When he hid from Achav and Ezevel.
וּזְכָר לָנוּ הַבְּרִית,
And remember for us the covenant
אֲשֶׁר כָּרַתָּ לְאַחֲרִית.
that You formed to the end of days.
וְטַהֵר הַשְּׁאֵרִית,
Cleanse the remnant [of Israel]
כְּמוֹ נֶתֶר וּכְבוֹרִית.
as with cleanser and soap.
וּלְשָׁבֵי שַׁעֲרוּרִית,
And to those who return from disgrace²⁵Those who repent.
סְלַח פֶּשַׁע וְזֵידוֹנִים:
forgive iniquity and wickedness.
אָבִֽינוּ מַלְכֵּֽנוּ חָנֵּֽנוּ וַעֲנֵֽנוּ כִּי אֵין בָּֽנוּ מַעֲשִׂים עֲשֵׂה עִמָּֽנוּ צְדָקָה וָחֶֽסֶד וְהוֹשִׁיעֵֽנוּ:
וַאֲנַֽחְנוּ לֺא נֵדַע מַה נַּעֲשֶׂה כִּי עָלֶֽיךָ עֵינֵֽינוּ: זְכֹר רַחֲמֶֽיךָ יְהֹוָה וַחֲסָדֶֽיךָ כִּי מֵעוֹלָם הֵֽמָּה: יְהִי חַסְדְּ֒ךָ יְהֹוָה עָלֵֽינוּ כַּאֲשֶׁר יִחַֽלְנוּ לָךְ: אַל תִּזְכָּר לָֽנוּ עֲוֹנוֹת רִאשׁוֹנִים מַהֵר יְקַדְּמֽוּנוּ רַחֲמֶֽיךָ כִּי דַלּֽוֹנוּ מְאֹד: חָנֵּֽנוּ יְהֹוָה חָנֵּֽנוּ כִּי־רַב שָׂבַֽעְנוּ בוּז: בְּרֺֽגֶז רַחֵם תִּזְכּוֹר: כִּי הוּא יָדַע יִצְרֵֽנוּ זָכוּר כִּי עָפָר אֲנָֽחְנוּ: עָזְרֵֽנוּ אֱלֺהֵי יִשְׁעֵֽנוּ עַל־דְּבַר כְּבוֹד־שְׁמֶֽךָ וְהַצִּילֵֽנוּ וְכַפֵּר עַל־חַטֹּאתֵֽינוּ לְמַֽעַן שְׁמֶֽךָ:
הש"ץ אומר קדיש שלם עם תתקבל
יִתְגַּדַּל וְיִתְקַדַּשׁ שְׁמֵהּ רַבָּא בְּעָלְמָא דִּי בְרָא כִרְעוּתֵהּ וְיַמְלִיךְ מַלְכוּתֵהּ בְּחַיֵּיכוֹן וּבְיוֹמֵיכוֹן וּבְחַיֵּי דְכָל בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל. בַּעֲגָלָא וּבִזְמַן קָרִיב וְאִמְרוּ אָמֵן:
יְהֵא שְׁמֵהּ רַבָּא מְבָרַךְ לְעָלַם וּלְעָלְמֵי עָלְמַיָּא: יִתְבָּרַךְ וְיִשְׁתַּבַּח וְיִתְפָּאַר וְיִתְרוֹמַם וְיִתְנַשֵּׂא וְיִתְהַדָּר וְיִתְעַלֶּה וְיִתְהַלָּל שְׁמֵהּ דְקֻדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא לְעֵֽלָּא מִן כָּל בִּרְכָתָא וְשִׁירָתָא. תֻּשְׁבְּחָתָא וְנֶחֱמָתָא. דַּאֲמִירָן בְּעָלְמָא וְאִמְרוּ אָמֵן:
תִּתְקַבֵּל צְלוֹתְהוֹן וּבָעוּתְהוֹן דְּכָל (בֵּית) יִשְׂרָאֵל קֳדָם אֲבוּהוֹן דִּי בִשְׁמַיָּא וְאִמְרוּ אָמֵן:
יְהֵא שְׁלָמָא רַבָּא מִן שְׁמַיָּא וְחַיִּים עָלֵֽינוּ וְעַל כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל וְאִמְרוּ אָמֵן:
עֹשֶׂה שָׁלוֹם בִּמְרוֹמָיו הוּא יַעֲשֶׂה שָׁלוֹם עָלֵֽינוּ וְעַל כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל וְאִמְרוּ אָמֵן:
