בדמות אלהים עשה אותו. ופירוש עשה תיקון, כמו לא עשה שפעמו (ש"ב יט כה). וכיצד עשה אותו בדמותו שנתן לו חכמה ובינה מעין חכמה של מעלה שקרא שם לכל בריה:
"Male and female were they created." The human had two faces, one in the back and one in the front.

זכר ונקבה בראם. שני פרצופין היו לו לאדם אחור וקדם:
And God called them Humanity. From here, the woman called is called human, and similarly it says "human beauty to dwell in a shrine." (Isaiah 44:13)

ויקרא את שמם אדם. מיכן שהאשה נקראת אדם, וכן הוא אומר כתפארת אדם לשבת בית (ישעיה מד יג):
"And Jared lived." And why was his name Jared? In his days, the angels came down from the heavens and were teaching humanity how to serve the Holy One.

ויחי ירד. ולמה נקרא שמו ירד, שבימיו ירדו המלאכים מן השמים והיו מלמדים הבריות היאך יעבדו להקב"ה:
"Enoch walked with God." He walked with the angels three hundred years in the garden of Eden he was with them, and he learned from them intercalations, and seasons, and constellations and much wisdom.

ויתהלך חנוך את האלהים. עם המלאכים הלך שלש מאות שנה בגן עדן היה עמם ולמד מהם עיבור ותקופות ומזלות וחכמות רבות:
"And he was no more, for God took him." Because he was a righteous man, the Holy One Blessed Be He took him from humanity and made him an angel and he is Metatron. There is a disagreement between Rabbi Akiva and his fellows on this matter. And the Sages say that Hanoch was sometimes a righteous man and sometimes a wicked man. The Holy One Blessed Be He said: While he is righteous, I will remove him from the world, meaning I will make him truthful, as it is stated, "Behold, I am about to take away the delight of your eyes from you through pestilence." (Ezekiel 24:16)

ואיננו כי לקח אותו אלהים. לפי שהיה צדיק, הקב"ה לקחו מבני אדם ועשה אותו מלאך והוא מטטרון, ומחלוקת בין ר' עקיבא וחביריו בדבר זה, וחכמים אומרים חנוך היה פעם צדיק ופעם רשע, אמר הקב"ה עד שהוא בצדקו אסלקנו מן העולם, כלומר אמיתנו, שנאמר הנני לוקח [ממך] את מחמד עיניך במגפה (יחזקאל כד טז):
"And Methuselah lived." And why was his name called Methuselah? Because the explicit name of God was written on his sword, and he killed many demons without number. And because he was a righteous man, he lived 969 years, therefore it is stated, "The fear of the Lord prolongs life." (Proverbs 10:27)

ויחי מתושלח. ולמה נקרא שמו מתושלח, כי שם המפורש כתוב על הסייף שלו והמית כמה שדים אשר אין להם מספר, ולפי שהיה צדיק חיה תשע מאות ותשע וששים שנה, לכך נאמר יראת ה' תוסיף (חיים) [ימים] (משלי י כז):

ויולד בן. שממנו נבנה העולם והוא נח, ולא קרא שמו זה השם כשנולד, אלא לאחר כשחדש להם כלי מחרישה:

זה ינחמנו ממעשינו. שלא היו חורשים כי אם באצבעותיהם:

ויהי נח בן חמש מאות שנה. ולמה איחר כל כך להעמיד תולדות, לפי שהיה רואה שיהיו רשעים, לכך לא היה רוצה להעמיד תולדות, עד שאמר הקב"ה כי אני עתיד להביא מבו ואצילך ואת בניך:

את שם. שהיה עדיף מכולהו בחכמתא, שהרי יפת היה גדול מכולם, שנאמר אחי יפת הגדול (בראשית י כא), לכך חשב שם בתחלה ויפת בסוף:
