ויהי לתקופת השנה ויסעו בני יעקב משכם , וישובו ויבואו חברונה אל יצחק אביהם וישבו שם. אך צאנם ובקרם וכל אשר להם רועים בשכם יום יום, כי מרעה טוב ושמן היה בשכם בימים ההם. וישב יעקב ובניו וכל ביתם בעמק חברון. ויהי בימים ההם בשנה ההיא, שנת מאה ושש שנים לחיי יעקב בשנה העשירית לבוא יעקב מפדן ארם. ותמת לאה אשת יעקב בשנה ההיא, בת אחת וחמישים שנה במותה בחברון. ויקברו אותה יעקב ובניו במערת שדה המכפלה אשר בחברון, אשר קנה אברהם מאת בני חת לאחוזת קבר. ובני יעקב ישבו עם אביהם בעמק חברון וידעו כל יושבי הארץ את גבורתם ויהי שנים בכל הארץ. ויוסף בן יעקב ובנימין אחיו בני רחל אשת יעקב עודם קטנים בימים ההם, ולא יצאו עם אחיהם במלחמותם בכל ערי האמורי. ירא יוסף את גבורת אחיו וגדולתם וישבח אותם ויהללם, אך גדל את נפשו עליהם ויתנשא בנפשו אליהם. וגם יעקב אביו אהב אותם מכל בניו כי בן זקונים הוא לו, ויעש לו כתונת פסים באהבתו אותו. וירא יוסף כי אותן אהב אביו מכל אחיו, ויוסף עוד ויתנשא יוסף על אחיו ויבא לאחיו דיבה רעה עליהם. ויראו בני יעקב את כל מעשה יוסף אחיהם איתם וכי אהב אותו אביהם מכולם, וישנאו אותן ולא יכלו דברו לשלום כל הימים.
And when the year came around, the sons of Jacob journeyed from Shechem, and they came unto Hebron to Isaac, their father, and they dwelt there, only their sheep and cattle and all belonging to them, they drove daily for pasture unto Shechem, for there was good and fat pasture about there in those days. And Jacob and his sons and all their households dwelt in the valley of Hebron. And it came to pass on those days and in that year, which was the one hundredth year of Jacob’s life, and the tenth of his return from Padan-Aram, that Leah, Jacob's wife, died; and she was fifty one years of age at the time of her dying in Hebron. And Jacob and his sons buried her in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham had bought from the sons of Heth for a burial ground. And the sons of Jacob dwelt with their father in the valley of Hebron, and all the inhabitants of the land knew their strength and their fame was all over the land. And Joseph, and Benjamin, his brother, the sons of Rachel, Jacob’s wife, were quite young in those days, and they did not go forth with their brothers in the war against the seven cities of the Amorites. And when Joseph saw the strength and greatness of his brothers he lauded and praised them, but he considered himself greater than they and he thought himself above them. And his father Jacob loved him, indeed, more than his other brothers, and he made unto him a coat of many colors out of his love to him. And when Joseph saw himself more beloved by his father than all his brothers, he continued to regard himself far above his brothers, and he brought unto his father evil reports concerning them. And when the sons of Jacob saw all the actions of their brother Joseph against them, and that their father loved him best of all, they hated him and they could not speak to him peaceably all the time.
