ויחי יעקב בארץ מצרים שבע עשרה שנה, ויהי ימי יעקב שני חייו שבע שנים וארבעים ומאת שנה. בעת ההיא חלה יעקב את חילו אשר ימות בו, וישלח ויקרא אל יוסף בנו ממצרים ויבוא יוסף אל אביו. ויאמר יעקב אל יוסף ואל בניו הנה אנוכי מת ואלוקי אבותיכם פקוד יפקוד אתכם והשיב אתכם אל הארץ אשר נשבע ה׳ לתת לכם ולבניכם אחריכם. ועתה במותי קברו אותי במערת שדה המכפלה בחברון בארץ כנען, אל אבותיי. וישבע יעקב את בניו לקבור אותו במכפלה בחברון, וישבעו לו בניו על הדבר הזה. ויצו אותם לאמור, עבדו את ה׳ אלוקיכם, כי הוא יציל אתכם מכל צרה כאשר הציל את אבותיכם. ויאמר יעקב קראו לי לכל בניכם, ויבואו כל ילדי בני יעקב וישבו לפניו. ויברך אותם יעקב ויאמר אליהם, ה׳ אלוקי אבותיכם יוסף עליכם ככם וככם אלף פעמים ויברך אתכם ויתן לכם את ברכת אברהם אביכם. ויצאו כל ילדי בני יעקב מאת פני יעקב ביום ההוא, כאשר ברך אותם. ויהי ממחרת ויקרא יעקב עוד אל בניו, ויקבצו כולם ויבואו אליו וישבו לפניו. ויברך יעקב את בניו ביום ההוא לפני מותו, איש איש כברכתו ברך אותם, הנה כתובה בספר תורת ה׳ לישראל. ויאמר יעקב אל יהודה, ידעתי בני כי גביר לאחיך אתה ומלך עליהם, ובניך ימלכו על בניהם עד עולם. אך למד נא את בניך קשת וכל כלי מלחמה, למען ילחמו את מלחמות אחיהם המלך בכל אויביו. ויצו יעקב את בניו עוד ביום ההוא לאמור, אני הנני נאסף היום הזה אל עמי, שטוני ממצרים וקברוני במערת המכפלה כאשר צויתי אתכם.
And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years, and the days of his life was one hundred and forty-seven years. At that time Jacob took sick, it was the sickness of which he died. And he had his son Joseph called from Egypt, and Joseph came unto his father. And Jacob said unto Joseph and unto his sons: Behold, I am dying, and the God of your fathers will remember you and he will bring you back to the land which the Lord hath sworn to give unto you and unto your children after you. And now after I am dead bury me in the cave of Machpelah, in Hebron, in the land of Canaan, with my forefathers. And Jacob caused his sons to swear that they would bury him in Machpelah, in Hebron, and his sons swore unto him concerning this thing. And he commanded unto them saying: Serve ye the Lord your God, for he will deliver you from all trouble as he hath delivered your forefathers. And Jacob said: Call unto me all your children. And all the children of Jacob's household came, and they sat down before him. And Jacob blessed them, and he said unto them : May God the Lord of your forefathers add unto you a thousand times as many as you are, and may he bless you and bestow upon you the blessing of Abraham your forefather. And all the children went away on that day, after Jacob had blessed them. And on the following morning Jacob called his sons once more and they assembled and seated themselves before him. And Jacob blessed his sons on that day before his death every one of them according to his blessing Jacob blessed his sons, and behold it is all written in the book of the law of the Lord to the children of Israel. And Jacob said unto Judah: Behold, my son, I know that thou art the most valiant among thy brothers and therefore rule thou over them, and thy sons shall rule over their sons forever. But teach thou thy sons to handle the bow and all the instruments of war that they may know to fight in the wars of their brothers against their enemies. And Jacob commanded his sons once more on that day, saying: Behold, I shall be gathered unto my people this day, and you shall carry me up from Egypt and bury me in the cave of Machpelah as I have commanded you,
