591. He continued, Envy inflicts the greatest misery on its votaries, their sadness is perpetual, their soul is grieved, their intellect is dimmed, and their heart disquieted.

ואמר כל אדם אוכל לרצון חוץ מן המקנא על הטובה שאינו מרוצה אלא בסורה:
592. Every man may enjoy life to his heart's content, save the envious, who delights only in the misfortunes of others.

והיה המקנא אשם בעבור שהוא שונא מה שהבורא חפץ. והתקצף מיתרון רוע לבב על אשר נתן לזולתו ומנע ממנו:
593. The envious is sinful; for he hates that which God wills, and rebelliously grieves at that which the Creator bestows on others and denies to him.

ואמר כל שנאה יש תקוה לרפואתה חוץ משנאה ממי שישנאך מקנאה:
594. Every animosity may be healed, save that whose source is envy.

ואמר המקנא ימיו מעטים מפני שדואג למה שלא יזיקהו ולא יועילהו וימות ביגון:
595. The days of the envious man are few; for he grieves at that which injures and benefits not, and ultimately perishes by grief.

ואמר אדם לחברו אני אוהב אותך אמר לו ולמה לא תאהבני? ואין אתה מאנשי אמונתי ולא מקרובי ומשכני. ופרנסתי על ידי זולתך:
596. A man addressed his friend in these terms: I do indeed esteem thee. And why not, replied the other, since thou art not my rival, nor my relative or neighbour, and seeing that my livelihood depends on others?

ואמר אל תקנא באחיך על אשר לו. כי הוא ינעם בחייו ואתה תשבע דאגה ונדודים:
597. Envy not the possession of thy fellow-man; for thou wilt thus render his existence delightful, whilst thine will pass in sadness, grief, and restlessness.

ואמר דייך מן המקנא שיאבל לשמחתך ולטובתך:
598. We are amply avenged on the envious man, when we see him dejected at our joy and happiness.
אמר החכם מפחיתות הנפש שתקנא באוהב נח אל טובתו:
588. ENVY is a blemish of the mind.
ואמר הקנאה לבני אדם כחולי הגוף. והיא מביאה לידי השחפת:
589. Envy is to the mind, what that disease is to the body which engenders consumption.
ואמר החכם לבנו. בני השמר מן הקנאה כי היא נכרת בך ולא תהיה נכרת בשנאך.
590. The sage thus addressed his son: Beware of envy, for thy countenance will betray it, but not that of thine enemy.
ואמר לא ראיתי חומס נפשו כמקנא. אבלו מתמיד ונפשו דואבת. ושכלו חסר. ולבו הומה:
