1אמר החכם מי שאינו מתגאה בנפשו הגביהה. והמתגאה השפילה:622. THE sage was wont to observe, The diffident will be encouraged, the proud humbled. 2ואמר מי שבטח בעצתו תועה. ומי שסמך בשכלו נכשל. ומי שמתגאה על בני אדם שפל:623. He continued, He who relies on his own counsel will err, and he who trusts in his own discretion will stumble. 3ואמר תמה אני במי שעבר במעבר השתן והדם מאין לו גאוה?624. Alas! exclaimed the sage, that man, who must pass through the most loathsome passages, should ever be proud!4המתגאה בנפשו רואה בה מה שהוא גדול ממנה בקלות דעתו. ומראה שמחתו לזה. והוא והנקרא גאוה:625. The arrogant, in his conceit and self-gratulation, over-rates his own merits,—this constitutes pride.5ושאלו לחכם מהו הגאוה? אמר שטות שאין בעליה יכול להניחה:626. The sage was asked to define pride? It is, said he, a folly which its devotees cannot cast off.
