the Bride

בההוא זמנא
יתערון כל מיני נגונא.
הה״ד הללוהו בתקע שופר
הללוהו בנבל וכנור
הללוהו בתוף ומחול
הללוהו במינים ועוגב
הללוהו בצלצלי שמע
הללוהו בצלצלי תרועה.

At that time,
all types of music will be aroused,
it is this that is written: (Ps. 150:3–5) Halelu-hu^∞Praise-Him! with the shophar blast,
Halelu-hu with lyre and harp,
Halelu-hu with timbre and dance,
Halelu-hu with stringed instruments and flute.
Halelu-hu with cymbals,
Halelu-hu with resonant cymbals^∞te-ru’ah .

שופר איהי שכינת׳ עלאה.
תקע דילה. שכינתא תתאה.
דאתמר בה
ותקע כף ירך יעקב
בגלותא:

The shophar^∞ram’s horn is Higher Shekhinah
– its ‘blast’^∞teq’a is the Lower Shekhinah,
of which it is stated:
(Gen. 32:26) And the thigh socket of Jacob was dislocated^∞teiq’a
– in exile.

בההוא זמנא
סלקא מן גלותא בשופר גדול.
ואתקריאת תקע בשופר גדול לחרותנו.

At that time,
he goes up from exile with a great shophar sound,
and She is called: ‘Blast^∞te-q’a the great shophar for our freedom’.^lviLiturgical: Morning Service, The ‘Standing’ Prayer

בנב״ל ב״ן ל״ב.

With the NeVeL^∞lyre is the letters of ben lev^∞son of heart.

בההוא זמנא
ב״ן יעול להיכליה דאיהו ל״ב.
ואתמר ביה
וטוב לב משתה תמיד.

At that time,
ben^∞son will enter his chamber, which is the heart^∞lev,
and it is stated of it:
(Prov. 15:15) ... the cheerful of heart is always at feast.

ומה דאתמר בקדמיתא
ויתעצב אל *לבו
בגין חייביא.
מיד דאתאבידו אתקיים ביה
ובאבד רשעי׳ רנה.

And that which was stated at first:
(Gen. 6:6) ... and He became saddened in His heart,
– is because of the wicked.
As soon as they become destroyed, it became fulfilled of Him:
(Prov. 11:10) ... and in the destruction of the wicked there is joy.

קב״ה דאיהו יקו״ק
דאתמר ביה יי׳ אורי וישעי.
נהיר בנ״ר
דאיהו שכינתא מצוה דיליה
וחדי בה.

KiNOR^∞harp is composed of K-V^△26 and NeR^∞candle.
The blessed Holy One, Who is YQV”Q,
of whom it is stated: (Ps. 27:1) Y”Y is my light and my salvation,
shines through the candle^∞ner,
which is the Shekhinah, His ‘precept’^∞mitzvah,
and He rejoices through Her.

צלצלי שמע חסד גבורה.
צלצלי תרועה נצח והוד.
ובכלהו כל הנשמה תהלל יק
דאיהו חכמה ובינה.
די בהון יהא פורקנא ל״ו ול״ה
דאינון בן ובת.

The cymbals – are Ḥesed and Gevurah, (Ps. 150:5)
the resonant cymbals – are Netzaḥ and Hod.
And in all of them: (Ps. 150:6) Every soul shall praise YaQ
– which is Ḥokhmah and Binah,
through whom will be redemption ‘for him’^∞LO and ‘for her’^∞LaH,
who are Son and Daughter.

ובהון יתמחון עמלקים מעלמא
ודא איהו סו״ף פסו״ק.

And through them, the’Amaleqites will be wiped from the world
– and this is the cantillation note soph pasuq^❖ֽ^∞‘end of verse’.

ד״א
ועשה לי מטעמים כאשר אהבתי
מפקודין דעשה.
ולא כאשר שנאתי
מפקודין דלא תעשה.

Another word:
(Gen. 27:4) And make delicacies for me such as I have loved
– from the performance of positive precepts,
and not such as I hate,
from the transgression of negative precepts.

פקודין דלא תעשה תליין מדחילו דיראה
ואינון לרחקא השטן מנייהו.
דלא יתקריב לגבי כרסיא דאיהו לבא.
דתבעא דינין על אברין קדישין דאינון ישראל.
ולבא שכינתא בינייהו.

Negative precepts are derived from ‘the fear of awe’,
and they exist to distance the Satan from them,
so that he does not approach the throne – which is the heart,
for he prosecutes judgement over the holy limbs which are Israel,
and the heart – the Shekhinah – is among them.

השטן איהו סמא״ל
שלטנותא דיליה בכבד
דעליה אתמר עשו הוא אדום.
ערקין דכבדא חיילין ומשריין דיליה.
וכבד נטיל כל לכלוכין וחובין דערקין
הה״ד ונשא השעיר עליו
את כל עונותם אל ארץ גזרה.
עונות תם
דההו׳ איש תם.
אל ארץ גזרה
אתר דגזרת עירין.

The Satan is Samael,
his dominion is in the liver,
about which it is stated: (Gen. 36:1) ... Esau is Edom.
The veins of the liver are its hosts and camps,
and the liver takes all the defilements and sins of the veins.
It is this that is written: (Lev. 16:22) And the goat will carry upon it,
all ‘their sins’^∞’avonotam , to an uninhabited land...
‘their sins’ is composed of ’avonot tam^∞sins-of the-perfect-one,
of that: (Gen. 25:27) perfect^∞tam man Jacob
– to an uninhabited^∞ge-zeirah land (Lev. 16:22)
– that place of: (Dan. 4:14) the decree^∞ge-zeirah of the watchful-ones.

מרה. חרבא דיליה.
עלה אתמ׳ ועל חרבך תחיה.
ומ״ל
דמרה איהי חרבא דמלאך המות.
דכתיב ואחריתה מרה כלענה
חדה כחרב פיות.
איהי חיים לכבד
וסם המות ללבא.

The bile^∞marah is its sword,
about that it is stated: (Gen. 27:40) And by your sword you will live...
And from whence do we know
that bile is the sword of the Angel of Death?
For it is written: (Prov. 5:4) And her end is bitter^∞marah as wormwood,
sharp as a two-edged sword.
It is life for the liver,^lviiSee BT Ḥullin 46a
but poison of death for the heart.

מרה איהי גיהנם.
ואית לה תרי פיות דאמרין הב הב
הה״ד
לעלוקא שתי בנות הב הב.
שתי בנות דאמרין הב חייבין לגיהנם.

The gall bladder is hell^∞gehinom,
and it has two ‘piyot’^∞‘edges’^∞mouths which say: ‘give, give!’
It is this that is written:
(Prov. 30:15) The leech has two daughters: ‘give and give’...
– two daughters who say: ‘give over the wicked to gehinom^∞hell’.^lviiiMidrash Mishlei, Parashah 30

שבעין ערקין אינון בכבדא
לקבל שבעין ממנן.
כבד ויותרת ע״ב.
יותרת דיליה איהי נחש אשת זנונים.
בגין דשיורין דיליה (נ״א דילה)
נטלא טחול דאיהו חשך
ועלה אתמר ולחשך קרא לילה.
דשלטנותה בגלותא דאיהו לילה.

There are seventy veins in the liver,
corresponding to ‘the seventy appointed-ones’
– and the liver and the extra lobe of the liver, are 72.
Its extra lobe is the snake, ‘the wife of whoring’,
because its [Var. her] leftovers
are taken by the spleen which is darkness,
and upon it is stated: (Gen. 1:5) ... and the darkness He called ‘night’^∞laiylah ... ,
for her dominion is in exile – which is night.

ובגלות׳ שעתא קיימא ליה
דאיהי לילי״ת. אימא דערב רב.
ואיהי שחוק הכסיל (ס״א הטחול).
ובגינה אתמר כלה ענן וילך
כן יורד שאול לא יעלה
ודא איהו צדיק ממנו בולע.

And in exile, the hour stands for it,
for she is Lylyt – the mother of the mixed multitude,
and she is the ‘laughter of the fool’, [Var. the spleen]
and because of her it is stated: (Job 7:9) As the cloud has finished and gone,
so one who has descended to she-ol will not rise.
And this is: ‘the more righteous than he it swallows’.

דרשע ודאי דאיהו כסיל עליה אתמר
למה תביט בוגדים תחריש
בבלע רשע צדיק ממנו
ואוקמוהו מארי מתני׳
צדיק ממנו בולע
אבל צדיק גמור אינו בולע.
ובגיניה אתמ׳
מוריד שאול ויעל

For of a completely wicked person, who is a fool, it is stated:
(Ḥab. 1:13) Why do you look upon traitors, and are silent,
when the wicked-one swallows him who is more righteous than he?
And the Masters of the Mishnah have established:^lixBT Berakhot 7b
‘one who is relatively more righteous than him, he swallows,
but a completely righteous person he does not swallow’.
And because of him it is stated:
(1 Sam. 2:6) ... who takes down to she-ol and raises-up.

ווי לנשמתא כד בלע לה טחול.
ווי לישראל כד אתבלעו
בערב רב
דעלייהו אתמר
ולא נודע כי באו אל קרבנה
ומראיהן רע כאשר בתחלה.

Woe to the soul when the spleen swallows it!
Woe to Israel when they become swallowed-up
by the mixed multitude,
for about them it is stated:
(Gen. 41:21) ... and it was not known that they had entered them,
and their appearance was as bad as at first...

בזמנא דגלותא
על ממנן דאומין דעלמא
וערב רב
אתמר בהון
היו צריה לראש אויביה שלו
צריה ודאי אינון ערב רב
עלייהו אתמר שריך סוררים
וחברי גנבים כלו אוהב שחד וגו׳.
אויביה שלו אלין עשו וישמעאל
ושבעין ממנן.
דאינון כלהו בשלוה בעותרא
וישראל בדוחקא בעניותא.

At the time of exile,
about the appointed-ones of the nations of the world,
and of the ‘mixed multitude’^∞’eirev rav,,
it is stated of them:
(Lam. 1:5) Her adversaries were on top, her enemies were in comfort,
her adversaries – surely these are the mixed multitude,
about them it is stated: (Is. 1:23) Your princes are deviants,
and a company of thieves, all of them, loving bribery... etc.
... Her enemies were in comfort... – these are Esau and Yishmael, (Lam. 1:5)
and the seventy appointed-ones,
who are all in comfort, in wealth,
while Israel is oppressed in poverty.

ובג״ד ווי לעלמא
כד אתבלעו בערבוביא בישא
ומאן גרם
דאתבלעו במעייהו
ולא נודע כי באו אל קרבנה.
בגין דעובדיהון בישין בידיהון.
הה״ד
ויתערבו בגוים
וילמדו מעשיהם.

And because of this, woe to the world,
when they Israel are swallowed-up in the evil mixture.
And what caused it,
that they were swallowed-up in their bowels, such that:
(Gen. 41:21) and it was not known that they had come into them?
It is because of the evil deeds in their hands,
it is this that is written:
(Ps. 106:35) And they became mixed up among the nations,
and they learnt their deeds.

כגוונא דא
נשמתא איהי כנסת ישראל
כד

Similarly,
the soul is Ke-nesset Yisrael,
when

איהי שלימא בפקודין דעשה
אתמר בה כלך יפה רעיתי
ומום אין בך.

She is complete with positive precepts,
it is stated of Her: (Song. 4:7) All of you is beautiful, my beloved,
and there is no blemish in you.

בההוא זמנא
שריא שם יי׳ עלה
ואתמר בה וראו כל עמי הארץ
כי שם יי נקרא עליך
ויראו ממך

At that time,
the Name Y”Y resides upon Her,
and it is stated of Her: (Deut. 28:10) And all the peoples of the land will see,
that the Name of Y”Y is called upon you,
and they will fear you.

וממנן דכבד וערקין דיליה
וממנן דטחול וערבוביא בישא דיליה.
מתכפיין תחות לבא
דתמן נשמתא.

And the appointed-ones of the liver and its veins,
and the appointed-ones of the spleen and its evil mixture,
become subjugated beneath the heart,
for the soul^∞nishmata is there.

ואם נשמתא איהי מתטנפא (ס״א פגימא) בחובין:
או גרע מינה אפילו פקודא חדא מאינון פקודין
כמה דאוקמוה מארי מתניתין
עבירה מכבה מצוה.
בההוא אתר (נ״א אבר) דשריא עבירה
ואסתלק מצוה מניה.
ההוא אבר איהו פגום.
ואיהו מום דנשמתא.
בגיניה
לא שריא קב״ה על נשמתא.
הה״ד
כל אשר בו מום לא יקרב.
נשמת׳ דאית בה מום בחד מרמ״ח פקודין דילה
לא אתקריבת בגיניה לגבי קב״ה.

And if the soul is defiled [Var. defected] by sins,
or is lacking even one precept of these precepts
– as the Masters of the Mishnah have established:^lxBT Sotah 21a
‘a transgression extinguishes a precept’ –
then in that place [Var. limb] where the transgression resides,
and the precept is withdrawn from it,
that limb is defective,
and it is a blemish of the soul,
– because of it,
the blessed Holy One does not reside upon the soul.
It is this that is written:
(Lev. 21:18) Anyone in whom there is a blemish shall not approach
– a soul which has a blemish in one of its 248 precepts,
does not approach the blessed Holy One because of it.

אבל נשמתא מסטרא דשכינתא לית בה מום
הה״ד כלך יפה רעיתי
ומום אין בך.
אם יצר הרע בעי לקרבא לההוא אתר
כיון דשכינתא שריא תמן דאיהי נשמתא
אתמר בה והזר הקרב יומת.

But a soul from the aspect of the Shekhinah has no blemish.
It is this that is written: (Song. 4:7) All of you is beautiful, my beloved,
and there is no blemish in you.
If the evil inclination wishes to approach that place,
then since the Shekhinah – which is the soul – resides there,
it is stated of Her: (Num. 1:51) ... and the stranger who approaches will die.

בגין דעלה אתמר אני יי׳ הוא שמי
וכבודי לאחר לא אתן
דהיינו אל אחר אל זר

Because of Her it is stated: (Is. 42:8) I am Y”Y, that is My Name,
and My glory I shall not give to another...
meaning ‘another god’, ‘a foreign god’.

דנשמתא איהי יקריה
ואיהי תושבחתי׳
דבה משבח בר נש לקב״ה
בצלותא בכל יומא
בכמה תושבחן והודאן.

For the soul is His glory,
and it is His praise,
with which a person praises the blessed Holy One
in prayer every day,
with many praises and thanksgivings.

ובגין דא אני יי׳ הוא שמי
וכבודי לאחר לא אתן
ותהלתי לפסילים
אלין שבעין ממנן
דלא יהיב לון קב״ה
רשו לשלטאה עלה
דאינון ערקין דכבד.
דאיהו אל אחר.

And because of this: I am Y”Y, that is My Name,
and My glory I will not give to another,
nor My praise to idols
– these are the seventy appointed-ones,
to whom the blessed Holy One does not give
permission to have dominion over Her,
those which are the veins of the liver,
which is ‘another god’.

טחול נחש.
יותרת הכבד אשת זנונים.
בתר דעבידת זיופא (ס״א נאופא)
עם אלקים אחרים
ופליגת דמא דילה דאיהי תמצית דילה
לכל ערקין.
שיורא קריבת לגבי טחול דאיהו בעלה כסיל.
דלא נטיל טחול אלא תמצית (נ״א שמרים) דדמא.
ולא יהיב ליה מדמא אחרא.
ובגין דא אתקריאת יותרת הכבד
בגין דלא יהיב ליה אלא שיורין.

The spleen is ‘snake’,
the extra lobe of the liver is ‘the whoring wife’,
after she has acted dishonestly [Var. immorally ]
with ‘other gods’,
and has distributed her blood, which is her concentrate,
to all the veins,
she offers the leftover to the spleen who is her husband, the fool.
For the spleen takes only the concentrate [Var. dregs] of blood,
but she does not give him of any other blood,
and because of this she is called ‘the extra lobe of the liver’,
because she gives him only the leftover.

וכבד איהו קטרוגא דריאה.
דסליק לגבי לבא. נורא מניה.
ואי לאו דנשיב ביה כנפי ריאה
הוה אוקיד ללבא.
(ס״א והוה אוקיד כל גופא נורא דלבא):

And the liver is the antagonist of the lung,
for it raises up a fire from it towards the heart,
and were it not that the wings of the lung blow upon it,
it would burn up the heart,
[Var. and the fire of the heart would burn up the whole body].

הדרא דכנתא לויתן
לקבל חלב טמא
ועליה *אתמ׳
אפילו נחש כרוך על עקבו
לא יפסיק
אבל עקרב פוסק.

The ‘entrails’^lxiSee BT Ḥullin 13a is livyatan^∞Leviathan,
corresponding to the impure fat,
and upon it is stated:^lxiiBT Berakhot 33a
‘Even if a snake is wound around his ankle,
he should not interrupt his prayer,
but for a scorpion, he interrupts’.

שרף איהו מרה קטרוגא דריאה.
בגין דמרה איהי שריפת כל גופא.

A serpent^∞saraph is the gall bladder – the denouncer of the lung,
because the bile is the burning^∞se-reiphah of the whole body.

בגין דא.
תקיעה שברים ותרועה
אינון תבירו דלהון.
ועלייהו אתמר אשרי העם
יודעי תרועה יי׳
באור פניך יהלכון.
מאי פניך
אלין תקיעה שברים ותרועה. דאינון
תקיעה חוורו דאנפין
שברים סומקו דאנפין.
תרועה ירוקא דאנפין.
ובה נפקין ישראל מן גלותא
בזמנא דמתהפכין אנפין דישראל לירוקא
כאתתא עוברא.

Because of this,
the horn-blasts te-qi’ah, she-varim, and te-ru’ah
are the means of their smashing,
and of them it is stated: (Ps. 89:16) Happy is the nation,
those who know the te-ru’ah, Y”Y,
they shall walk in the light of Your face.
What is ... Your face?
These are te-qi’ah, she-varim, te-ru’ah, which are:
te-qi’ah – the white of the face,
she-varim – the red of the face,
te-ru’ah – the green of the face.
And through it te-ru’ah Israel emerges from exile,
when the faces of Israel are transformed to green,
like a pregnant woman.^lxiiiSee BT Sanhedrin 98b

ובאלין תלת גוונין נהרא שרגא
דאיהי נר יי׳ נשמת אדם.
מאי אדם יו״ד ק״א וא״ו ק״א.

And with these three colours does a candle shine,
which is: (Prov. 20:27) A candle of Y”Y is the soul of adam^∞human^△45.
What is ‘adam’? YOD QE VAV QE^△45.

תלת גוונין דשרגא
ותלת גוונין אילין אינון לבושין לתלת אבהן:
דאינון חוור סומק ירוק.
גוון אוכמא איהי קדרותא דלהון
ועלה אתמר אלביש שמים קדרות.
ובהון מתלבשין הו״ה
תכלת לבושא דאת י׳
דאיהו תכלית דכלא.

There are three colours of a candle,
and these three colours are the garments of the three Patriarchs,
which are white, red and green,
the colour black is their ‘darkening’,
and of it is stated: (Is. 50:3) I shall dress the heavens with darkness,
and in them are enclothed H-V-H.
Blue^∞te-khelet is the garment of the letter Yod^❖י,
which is the essential point^∞takhlit of everything.

נר איהו י׳:
שלהובא דסליק מניה ו׳
ונענועא דיליה הכא והכא
דא ה״ה.

The candle is Yod^❖י,
the flame that ascends from it is Vav^❖ו,
and its flickering movement – here and here –
is Hei-Hei^❖ה־ה.

ולסטרא אחרא
אית נר חשוכא דגיהנם.
ואית ליה תלת גוונין.
גוון סומק דא כבד עשו הוא אדום.
מרה גוון ירוק
טחול גוון שחור.
ועליה אתמר ותכהין עיניו מראות.

And of ‘the other side’,
there is a candle of darkness of hell^∞gehinom,
and it has three colours.
The colour red is the liver: (Gen. 36:1) ... Esau is Edom.
The gall bladder is green,
the spleen is the colour black,
and of it is stated: (Gen. 27:1) ... and his eyes were dimmed from seeing...

וסימניך באלין גוונין.
שקערורות ירקרקות או אדמדמות:
ומראיהן שפל מן הקיר
שפל הוא גוון אוכם

And your sign for these colours:
(Lev. 14:37) ... greenish or reddish stains,
and their appearance is lower^∞shaphal than the wall.
Shaphal^∞low is the colour black,
