Selichot Nusach Lita Linear · Fourth Day, Chapter 4

‹›
  1. 1

This prayer was composed by Rabbi Gershom ben Yehudah (the Light of the Exile).

  2. 2

Our God and God of our fathers!

  3. 3

    Where are all Your wonders—

  4. 4

    the great and awesome [wonders]

  5. 5

of which our fathers told us,

  6. 6

    Adonoy of Hosts?

  7. 7

When Israel went down to Egypt

  8. 8

    to slavery and toil,

  9. 9

with cords of humanity, You drew them—1Jacob and his sons were drawn to Egypt to see Joseph.

  10. 10

    not with chains.

  11. 11

Even those who enslaved them with hard labor,

  12. 12

who decreed their males be cast in the river,

  13. 13

    דַּנְתָּם סְאָה בִסְאָה, מִדָּה בְמִדָּה.

    You judged them measure for measure;

  14. 14

You brought out the bannered hosts

  15. 15

with a wealth of all desired gifts.

  16. 16

    The sea and its waves

  17. 17

    were divided by Your strength,

  18. 18

    You dried up the Jordan

  19. 19

and they crossed it on foot,

  20. 20

You sustained them in the wilderness,

  21. 21

    וְדָבָר לֹא חָסָרוּ.

    and they lacked nothing;

  22. 22

    kingdoms and nations

  23. 23

    were put into their hands.

  24. 24

    They rejected the good ways

  25. 25

and they were pursued by their oppressors,

  26. 26

they cried to You and You heard them,

  27. 27

and You appointed deliverers for them.

  28. 28

When they lived in the land,

  29. 29

    they enjoyed all good things,

  30. 30

they sinned and were exiled [to Babylon],

  31. 31

You remembered to redeem after seventy years.

  32. 32

    They joined themselves to falsehood

  33. 33

and were left to be trampled,

  34. 34

    they were forced into exile

  35. 35

by men of violence [the Romans],

  36. 36

they were forced out of their land,

  37. 37

    וְקֵץ־חֲזָרָתם נִכְמָס.

    and the time of their return is concealed;

  38. 38

they live among the nations as bondsmen.

  39. 39

    Strengthen the remnant that escaped,

  40. 40

    she [Israel] is weakened

  41. 41

    מִכֹּבֶד רָעָה מַמְאֶרֶת.

    by the heavy and bitter catastrophe;

  42. 42

still feeling the pain of the first calamity2The destruction of the First Temple.

  43. 43

she was quickly struck a second below.3The destruction of the Second Temple.

  44. 44

From day to day my trouble increases,

  45. 45

each new day is worse than yesterday.

  46. 46

    I am weary of bearing

  47. 47

    the yoke of the oppressor

  48. 48

    who says:

  49. 49

“Count out and bring heavy taxes.”

  50. 50

    Your treasured people

  51. 51

are hard pressed by the cruel enemy,

  52. 52

    she [the enemy] anticipated

  53. 53

that they would exchange their faith in God

  54. 54

    for a faith in man.

  55. 55

    How long, Adonoy,

  56. 56

shall I call [upon You] in distress?

  57. 57

    Answer me with Divine enlargement,

  58. 58

for Your hand is not lacking.

  59. 59

If the gravity of our transgressions

  60. 60

have created a barrier between You and us,

  61. 61

    פַּרְגּוֹד אִם־נִנְעַל בִּפְנֵי הַתְּפִלָּה.

    if the curtain has shut out [our] prayer;

  62. 62

Mighty God, beneath Your throne of glory,

  63. 63

    hollow out a passage,

  64. 64

that our cry come before You,

  65. 65

that it be accepted before Your glory.

  66. 66

    Proclaim a year of favor

  67. 67

    to relieve me from grief,

  68. 68

gather my scattered ones, and go before me,

  69. 69

    defend me Adonoy

  70. 70

    רִיבֵי־נַפְשִׁי.

    against those that strive against my soul;

  71. 71

please save me, my holy God.

  72. 72

Break the teeth of the wicked with gravel,

  73. 73

may they be childless, their wives widows,

  74. 74

    destroy them; [and]

  75. 75

let their blood be spilled on the ground,

  76. 76

    לָרוֹס.

    let it be poured out;

  77. 77

release those who are prepared to die4For Your sake.

  78. 78

    and betroth them in faithfulness.

  79. 79

    Repair the breach

  80. 80

of the tabernacle of David which is fallen,

  81. 81

    raise up the city

  82. 82

which is lowered to the dust.

  83. 83

Comfort her in captivity with double measure,

  84. 84

brighten her light and lighten her darkness.

  85. 85

Build Your city as in the days of old,

  86. 86

restore Your Altar, Temple, and Entrance Hall,

  87. 87

then will Judah and Israel worship You there,

  88. 88

    —all of them,

  89. 89

and Your Name will be magnified forever.

  90. 90

    Almighty! King!

  91. 91

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

  92. 92

    governs with kindness

  93. 93

forgives the iniquities of His people.

  94. 94

He removes their sins one by one,

  95. 95

    increasing forgiveness to sinners,

  96. 96

    and pardon to transgressors.

  97. 97

    Acting righteously

  98. 98

    עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ.

    with all who are of flesh and spirit;

  99. 99

    not according to their wickedness

  100. 100

    does He repay them.

  101. 101

    Almighty!

  102. 102

    You instructed us to recite

  103. 103

    שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

    the thirteen Divine attributes;

  104. 104

    remember unto us this day

  105. 105

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

  106. 106

    as You made them known

  107. 107

to the humble Moses of old,

  108. 108

    as it is written,

  109. 109

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

  110. 110

    and stood with him there,

  111. 111

    and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

  112. 112

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  113. 113

    וַיַּֽעֲבֹר יְהֹוָה עַל פָּנָיו

    And Adonoy passed before him [Moses];

  114. 114

    and proclaimed:

  115. 115

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  116. 116

    Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  117. 117

    Slow to Anger,

  118. 118

and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.

  119. 119

    Keeper of kindness

  120. 120

    for thousands of generations,

  121. 121

    Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,

  122. 122

    וְחַטָּאָה

    and sin;

  123. 123

and Acquitter of those who repent.”

  124. 124

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  125. 125

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  126. 126

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

  127. 127

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  128. 128

    “For You, my Master,

  129. 129

    are good and forgiving,

  130. 130

    and abounding in kindness

  131. 131
