Selichot Nusach Lita Linear · Fast of Gedaliah, Chapter 4

‹›
  1. 1

  2. 2

While Adonoy may be found,1Especially during the Ten Days of Penitence.

  3. 3

    לְדָרְשׁוֹ קִדַּמְתִּי.

    I rise early to seek Him;

  4. 4

to entreat Him to atone [my] iniquities,

  5. 5

for I am red [with sin] as scarlet.

  6. 6

My heart is confused and benumbed,

  7. 7

and as one asleep, I drowse.

  8. 8

I have become almost like Sodom,

  9. 9

and to Gomorrah am I likened.

  10. 10

    I resemble a faithless wife,

  11. 11

    מְנָאֶפֶת וַחֲלָלָה.

    and a shameless adultress;

  12. 12

I have become like a polluted garment,

  13. 13

    like a garment

  14. 14

    stained with blood.

  15. 15

    I lack a mediator,

  16. 16

and one that knows how to pray [for me].

  17. 17

    Look Adonoy! and see,

  18. 18

    for I have become repulsive.2Lamentations 1:11.

  19. 19

[Israel] the honored one has become repulsive

  20. 20

    בְּיַד־מְגָאֵל.

    in the hands of those who besmirch her;

  21. 21

she has been sold for naught forever,

  22. 22

and there is none to redeem her.

  23. 23

That which was firm and upraised3The Holy Temple. has sunken

  24. 24

    וְחָרֵב אֲרִיאֵל.

    and the Ariel [the Altar] has been destroyed;

  25. 25

cast down from heaven to the earth,

  26. 26

is the glory of Israel.4Lamentations 2:1.

  27. 27

Israel is a prey to robbers and vandals—

  28. 28

    how long will this continue?

  29. 29

Numerous as locusts are my pursuers

  30. 30

    וְעָצְמוּ מַצְמִיתַי.

    and mighty are my destroyers;

  31. 31

    when I take to heart,

  32. 32

my ruin, my destruction and my devastation,

  33. 33

my soul prefers [to die from] strangulation,

  34. 34

and death rather than to dwell in my bones.5My soul prefers death rather than dwell within me.

  35. 35

    Because my bones

  36. 36

    are crushed and pierced

  37. 37

by those who provoke and blaspheme You,

  38. 38

    I said,

  39. 39

“I cannot bear Your anger and Your wrath.”

  40. 40

May it be in Your heart

  41. 41

to redeem the life of Your beloved ones,

  42. 42

    for Your Name is called

  43. 43

on Your city and on Your people.

  44. 44

    Your people, scattered and dispersed

  45. 45

    among every nation,

  46. 46

    remember You in their adversity

  47. 47

and fear You in deed and thought.

  48. 48

    Drown their deliberate sins,

  49. 49

and forgive and heal their negligence.

  50. 50

    My Master, hear our voice,

  51. 51

let Your ears be attentive [to our prayer].

  52. 52

    Let Your ears be attentive

  53. 53

to the outpouring of our pleading,

  54. 54

let the praise of our lips be acceptable

  55. 55

as the sweet savor of our sacrifices.

  56. 56

    We seek You, our Shield,

  57. 57

and in You we place our trust,

  58. 58

for we are called by Your Name,

  59. 59

    do not abandon us.

  60. 60

You have abandoned us, O Master,

  61. 61

    these many years—why?

  62. 62

We have become as astonishment, an example,

  63. 63

    a byword, a scorn,

  64. 64

a shame and disgrace.6Among the nations of the world who persecute us.

  65. 65

    Speedily fulfill the promise

  66. 66

that You made to the desolate [land]:

  67. 67

    “I, Adonoy, build the ruins,

  68. 68

and plant that which was desolate.”7Ezekiel 36:36.

  69. 69

    The desolate land,

  70. 70

in Your great mercy, rebuild it,

  71. 71

    וּתְכוֹנְנָהּ.

    and establish it firmly;

  72. 72

    hear, O God, her supplication,

  73. 73

for the time to favor her is come.

  74. 74

    Strengthen those who praise You,

  75. 75

shield them in the shadow of Your hand,

  76. 76

and may the redeemed ones of Adonoy, return

  77. 77

and come to Zion with singing.

  78. 78

    Almighty! King!

  79. 79

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

  80. 80

    governs with kindness

  81. 81

forgives the iniquities of His people.

  82. 82

He removes their sins one by one,

  83. 83

    increasing forgiveness to sinners,

  84. 84

    and pardon to transgressors.

  85. 85

    Acting righteously

  86. 86

    עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ.

    with all who are of flesh and spirit;

  87. 87

    not according to their wickedness

  88. 88

    does He repay them.

  89. 89

    Almighty!

  90. 90

    You instructed us to recite

  91. 91

    שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

    the thirteen Divine attributes;

  92. 92

    remember unto us this day

  93. 93

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

  94. 94

    as You made them known

  95. 95

to the humble Moses of old,

  96. 96

    as it is written,

  97. 97

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

  98. 98

    and stood with him there,

  99. 99

    and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

  100. 100

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  101. 101

And Adonoy passed before him [Moses],

  102. 102

    and proclaimed:

  103. 103

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  104. 104

    Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  105. 105

    Slow to Anger,

  106. 106

and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.

  107. 107

    Keeper of kindness

  108. 108

    for thousands of generations,

  109. 109

    Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,

  110. 110

    וְחַטָּאָה

    and sin;

  111. 111

and Acquitter of those who repent.

  112. 112

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  113. 113

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  114. 114

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

  115. 115

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  116. 116

    “For You, my Master,

  117. 117

    are good and forgiving,

  118. 118

    and abounding in kindness

  119. 119

to all who call upon You.”

  120. 120

    Seek Adonoy and His might,

  121. 121

    seek His Presence continually.

  122. 122

Seek Adonoy while He may be found

  123. 123

call upon Him while He is near.

  124. 124

Let the wicked one forsake his way,

  125. 125

    וְאִישׁ אָוֶן מַחְשְׁבֹתָיו

    and the man of deceit, his thoughts;

  126. 126

and let him return to Adonoy,

  127. 127

and He will have compassion for him,

  128. 128

    and to our God,

  129. 129

    for He will abundantly pardon.

  130. 130

    Return Israel unto God,

  131. 131

for you have failed by your iniquity.

  132. 132

As a father has compassion on his children

  133. 133

so do You have compassion on us, Adonoy.

  134. 134

    לַיהֹוָה הַיְשׁוּעָה,

    Deliverance is Adonoy’s;

  135. 135

upon Your people is Your blessing. Selah!

  136. 136

Adonoy of Hosts is with us,

  137. 137

a stronghold for us is the God of Jacob. Selah!

  138. 138

    Adonoy of Hosts!

  139. 139

fortunate is the man who trusts in You.

  140. 140

    יְהֹוָה הוֹשִֽׁיעָה,

    Adonoy, deliver us;

  141. 141

the King will answer us on the day we call.

  142. 142

“Please pardon the sins of this nation

  143. 143

    in accordance with the greatness

  144. 144

    חַסְדֶּֽךָ.

    of Your lovingkindness;

  145. 145

and as You forgave this people

  146. 146

from when it left Egypt until now.”

  147. 147

    And there it is said:

  148. 148

    “And Adonoy said,

  149. 149

I have pardoned [them] as you have asked.”

  150. 150

Incline Your ear, my God, and hear,

  151. 151

open Your eyes and behold our desolate places,

  152. 152

    וְהָעִיר אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלֶֽיהָ

    and the city which is called by Your Name;

  153. 153

for it is not on account of our righteousness

  154. 154

that we let fall our supplication before You,

  155. 155

but because of Your great mercy.

  156. 156

My Master, hear! My Master, pardon!

  157. 157

My Master, listen and take action,

  158. 158

    do not delay!

  159. 159

    For Your sake, my God,

  160. 160

    because Your Name is proclaimed

  161. 161

over Your city and over Your people.
