Selichot Nusach Lita Linear · Fast of Gedaliah, Chapter 5

‹›
  1. 1

This prayer was composed by Rav Saadyah Gaon.

  2. 2

Our God and God of our fathers!

  3. 3

My soul mourns and my face is darkened,

  4. 4

[because] the House of my glory1The Holy Temple.

  5. 5

has been smashed by the lion;2Nevuchadnetsar.

  6. 6

    even my escaped ones

  7. 7

    that were left, my remnant,

  8. 8

were crushed on the third day of Tishri.

  9. 9

    The raging flames and flood

  10. 10

    שְׁטָפוּנוּ בְּדָלְקָם.

    overwhelmed us in their pursuit;

  11. 11

    they trod down the Temple

  12. 12

    וּבָזְזוּ חֶלְקָם.

    and divided the spoil;

  13. 13

    the elders of the remnant

  14. 14

who escaped the day of vengeance,

  15. 15

    were now destroyed

  16. 16

on the fast day of Gedaliah ben Achikam.

  17. 17

The poor among the people were torn apart,

  18. 18

that which was left by the caterpillar,3Nevuchadnetsar.

  19. 19

was quickly devoured by the locust;4Ishmael ben Netanya.

  20. 20

    the vine-keepers and farmers

  21. 21

that were left on the orders of Nevuchadnetsar,5Lit. “the earth shakers.” See Jeremiah 52:16.

  22. 22

    perished in the flames,

  23. 23

and there was none left to erect a fence

  24. 24

and to stand in the breach.

  25. 25

How can I narrate [the disaster]

  26. 26

when my groaning is so heavy?

  27. 27

    My soul is weary,

  28. 28

    and my congregations are grieved.

  29. 29

The few vines [Jews] that remained,

  30. 30

    from the fierce burning,

  31. 31

    even they could not remain,

  32. 32

    and were scattered in wrath.

  33. 33

How long will You hide your face from us?

  34. 34

    Hear our cry

  35. 35

    and loosen our bound ones,

  36. 36

    O Holy One, behold,

  37. 37

there is no one to plead in our behalf,

  38. 38

look on our misery [and redeem us],

  39. 39

and we will crown You with Your praise.

  40. 40

    We have been despoiled

  41. 41

    from generation to generation,

  42. 42

    and from age to age,

  43. 43

the fangs of the flying viper

  44. 44

    אוֹתָנוּ עוֹקֵץ.

    stings us;

  45. 45

    Mighty One,

  46. 46

be aroused and awake for our justification,

  47. 47

    Atone our iniquities,

  48. 48

and call an end [to our suffering].

  49. 49

    Almighty! King!

  50. 50

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

  51. 51

    governs with kindness

  52. 52

forgives the iniquities of His people.

  53. 53

He removes their sins one by one,

  54. 54

    increasing forgiveness to sinners,

  55. 55

    and pardon to transgressors.

  56. 56

    Acting righteously

  57. 57

    עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ.

    with all who are of flesh and spirit;

  58. 58

    not according to their wickedness

  59. 59

    does He repay them.

  60. 60

    Almighty!

  61. 61

    You instructed us to recite

  62. 62

    שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

    the thirteen Divine attributes;

  63. 63

    remember unto us this day

  64. 64

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

  65. 65

    as You made them known

  66. 66

to the humble Moses of old,

  67. 67

    as it is written,

  68. 68

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

  69. 69

    and stood with him there,

  70. 70

    and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

  71. 71

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  72. 72

And Adonoy passed before him [Moses],

  73. 73

    and proclaimed:

  74. 74

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  75. 75

    Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  76. 76

    Slow to Anger,

  77. 77

and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.

  78. 78

    Keeper of kindness

  79. 79

    for thousands of generations,

  80. 80

    Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,

  81. 81

    וְחַטָּאָה

    and sin;

  82. 82

and Acquitter of those who repent.

  83. 83

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  84. 84

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  85. 85

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

  86. 86

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  87. 87

    “For You, my Master,

  88. 88

    are good and forgiving,

  89. 89

    and abounding in kindness

  90. 90

to all who call upon You.”

  91. 91

Seek Adonoy while He may be found

  92. 92

call upon while He is near.

  93. 93

    Return, irreverent children,

  94. 94

    I will heal your irreverence.

  95. 95

    Behold we approach You

  96. 96

for You are Adonoy, our God.

  97. 97

Return, Israel to Adonoy, Your God,

  98. 98

for you have failed by your iniquity.

  99. 99

As a father has compassion on his children

  100. 100

so do You have compassion on us, Adonoy.

  101. 101

    לַיהֹוָה הַיְשׁוּעָה,

    Deliverance is Adonoy’s;

  102. 102

upon Your people is Your blessing. Selah!

  103. 103

Adonoy of Hosts is with us,

  104. 104

a stronghold for us is the God of Jacob. Selah!

  105. 105

    Adonoy of Hosts!

  106. 106

fortunate is the man who trusts in You.

  107. 107

    יְהֹוָה הוֹשִֽׁיעָה,

    Adonoy, deliver us;

  108. 108

the King will answer us on the day we call.

  109. 109

“Please pardon the sins of this nation

  110. 110

    in accordance with the greatness

  111. 111

    חַסְדֶּֽךָ.

    of Your lovingkindness;

  112. 112

and as You forgave this people

  113. 113

from when it left Egypt until now.”

  114. 114

    And there it is said:

  115. 115

    “And Adonoy said,

  116. 116

I have pardoned [them] as you have asked.”

  117. 117

Incline Your ear, my God, and hear,

  118. 118

open Your eyes and behold our desolate places,

  119. 119

    וְהָעִיר אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלֶֽיהָ

    and the city which is called by Your Name;

  120. 120

for it is not on account of our righteousness

  121. 121

that we let fall our supplication before You,

  122. 122

but because of Your great mercy.

  123. 123

My Master, hear! My Master, pardon!

  124. 124

My Master, listen and take action,

  125. 125

    do not delay!

  126. 126

    For Your sake, my God,

  127. 127

    because Your Name is proclaimed

  128. 128

over Your city and over Your people.
