אֵל רַחוּם שְׁמֶֽךָ.
Merciful Almighty is Your Name,
אֵל חַנּוּן שְׁמֶֽךָ.
Gracious Almighty is Your Name.
בָּֽנוּ נִקְרָא שְׁמֶֽךָ.
Upon us is Your Name called,
יְהֹוָה עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן שְׁמֶֽךָ:
Adonoy! act [now] for the sake of Your Name.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן אֲמִתָּךְ.
Act for the sake of Your truth.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן בְּרִיתָךְ.
Act for the sake of Your covenant.
עֲשֵׁה לְמַֽעַן גָּדְלָךְ וְתִפְאַרְתָּךְ.
Act for the sake of Your greatness and glory.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן דָּתָךְ.
Act for the sake of Your Law.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן הוֹדָךְ.
Act for the sake of Your glorious majesty.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן וִעוּדָךְ.
Act for the sake of Your congregation.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן זִכְרָךְ.
Act for the sake of Your memorial.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן חַסְדָּךְ.
Act for the sake of Your kindliness.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַעַן טוּבָךְ.
Act for the sake of Your goodness.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן יִחוּדָךְ.
Act for the sake of Your Unity.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן כְּבוֹדָךְ.
Act for the sake of Your honor.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן לִמּוּדָךְ.
Act for the sake of Your teaching.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן מַלְכוּתָךְ.
Act for the sake of Your kingship.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן נִצְחָךְ.
Act for the sake of Your eternity.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן סוֹדָךְ.
Act for the sake of Your counsel.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן עֻזָּךְ.
Act for the sake of Your strength.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן פְּאֵרָךְ.
Act for the sake of Your magnificence.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן צִדְקָתָךְ.
Act for the sake of Your righteousness.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן קְדֻשָּׁתָךְ.
Act for the sake of Your holiness.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן רַחֲמֶֽיךָ הָרַבִּים.
Act for the sake of Your abundant mercy.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן שְׁכִינָתָךְ.
Act for the sake of Your Divine Presence.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן תְּהִלָּתָךְ.
Act for the sake of Your praise.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן אוֹהֲבֶֽיךָ
Act for the sake of Your beloved ones,
שֹׁכְנֵי עָפָר.
who repose in the dust.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן אַבְרָהָם יִצְחָק
Act for the sake of Abraham, Isaac,
וְיַעֲקֹב.
and Jacob.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן משֶׁה וְאַהֲרֹן,
Act for the sake of Moses and Aaron.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן דָּוִד וּשְׁלֹמֹה.
Act for the sake of David and Solomon.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן יְרוּשָׁלַֽיִם
Act for the sake of Jerusalem,
עִיר קָדְשֶֽׁךָ.
city of Your holiness.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן צִיּוֹן
Act for the sake of Zion,
מִשְׁכַּן כְּבוֹדֶֽךָ.
Dwelling Place of Your honor.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן שִׁמְמוֹת
Act for the sake of the desolation
הֵיכָלֶֽךָ.
of Your Habitation.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן הֲרִיסוּת
Act for the sake of the destruction
מִזְבְּחֶֽךָ.
of Your Altar.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן דַּם
Act for the sake of the blood
עֲבָדֶיךָ הַשָּׁפוּךְ.
of Your servants that was spilled.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן הֲרוּגִים
Act for the sake of those who were slain
עַל שֵׁם קָדְשֶֽׁךָ.
to sanctify Your holy Name.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן טְבוּחִים
Act for the sake of those who were slaughtered
עַל יִחוּדֶֽךָ.
for [proclaiming] Your Oneness.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן
Act for the sake of those
בָּאֵי בָאֵשׁ וּבַמַּֽיִם
who went through fire and water
עַל קִדּוּשׁ שְׁמֶֽךָ.
to sanctify Your Name.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן יוֹנְקֵי שָׁדַֽיִם
Act for the sake of nursing-infants
שֶׁלֹּא חָטְאוּ.
who have never sinned.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַֽעַן גְּמוּלֵי חָלָב
Act for the sake of weaned-children
שֶׁלֹּא פָשְׁעוּ.
who have never transgressed.

עֲשֵׂה לְמַעַנְךָ אִם לֹא לְמַעֲנֵֽנוּ.
Act for Your sake and not ours.
עֲשֵׂה לְמַעַנְךָ וְהוֹשִׁיעֵֽנוּ:
Act for Your sake and deliver us.
עֲנֵנוּ יְהֹוָה עֲנֵנוּ.

Answer us, You Who answer in time of distress,

He Who is near to those who call upon Him,

He Who answered our father Abraham
בְּהַר הַמּוֹרִיָּה הוּא יַעֲנֵֽנוּ:
on Mount Moriah, He will answer us.
מִי שֶׁעָנָה לְיִצְחָק בְּנוֹ
He Who answered Isaac, his son,
כְּשֶׁנֶּעֱקַד עַל גַּבֵּי הַמִּזְבֵּֽחַ
when he was bound on the altar,
הוּא יַעֲנֵֽנוּ:
He will answer us.
מִי שֶׁעָנָה לְיַעֲקֹב בְּבֵית אֵל
He Who answered Jacob in Beth El,
הוּא יַעֲנֵנוּ:
He will answer us.

בְּבֵית הָאֲסוּרִים
in prison,
הוּא יַעֲנֵֽנוּ:

He Who answered our ancestors at
עַל יַם סוּף
the Reed Sea,

He Who answered Moses at Horeb,

in the lions’ den,

מִי שֶׁעָנָה לְמָרְדְּכַי וְאֶסְתֵּר
He Who answered Mordecai and Esther
בְּשׁוּשַׁן הַבִּירָה
in Shushan, the capital [city of Persia],
הוּא יַעֲנֵֽנוּ:
He will answer us.
מִי שֶׁעָנָה לְעֶזְרָא בַגּוֹלָה
He Who answered Ezra in captivity,
הוּא יַעֲנֵֽנוּ:

לְכָל הַצַדִּיקִים וְהַחֲסִידִים
all the righteous, the pious,
וְהַתְּמִימִים וְהַיְשָׁרִים
the perfect and the upright,
הוּא יַעֲנֵֽנוּ:
He will answer us.
רַחְמָנָא דְעָנֵי לַעֲנִיֵּי
May the Merciful One, Who answers the poor,
עֲנֵינָן.

דְעָנֵי לִתְבִירֵי לִבָּא
Who answers the broken-hearted,
עֲנֵינָן.

May the Merciful One
דְעָנֵי לְמַכִּיכֵי רוּחָא
Who answers the broken in spirit,
עֲנֵינָן.

Merciful One, answer us;
רַחֲמָנָא חוּס.
Merciful One, have pity;

Merciful One, have compassion on us,

now, speedily, and very soon.
וַיֹּֽאמֶר דָּוִד אֶל־גָּד
And David said to Gad (II Samuel 24:14),
צַר־לִי מְאֹד
“I am greatly distressed;
נִפְּלָה־נָּא בְיַד־יְהֹוָה
let us fall into the hand of Adonoy
כִּי־רַבִּים רַחֲמָיו
for His mercies are great,
וּבְיַד־אָדָם אַל־אֶפֹּֽלָה:
but into the hand of man let me not fall.
רַחוּם וְחַנּוּן
Merciful and gracious One
חָטָֽאתִי לְפָנֶֽיךָ
I have sinned before You;
יְהֹוָה מָלֵא רַחֲמִים
Adonoy, full of mercy,
רַחֵם עָלַי
have compassion upon me
וְקַבֵּל תַּחֲנוּנָי:
and accept my supplications.
יְהֹוָה אַל־בְּאַפְּךָ תוֹכִיחֵֽנִי
Adonoy, do not rebuke me with Your anger,
וְאַל־בַּחֲמָתְךָ תְיַסְּרֵֽנִי:
nor chastise me with Your rage.
חָנֵּֽנִי יְהֹוָה
Be gracious unto me, Adonoy,
כִּי אֻמְלַל אָֽנִי
for I am desolate,
רְפָאֵֽנִי יְהֹוָה כִּי נִבְהֲלוּ עֲצָמָי:
help me Adonoy, for my bones are terrified.
וְנַפְשִׁי נִבְהֲלָה מְאֹד
My soul, too, is utterly terrified,
וְאַתָּה יְהֹוָה עַד־מָתָי:
and You Adonoy, how long?
שׁוּבָה יְהֹוָה חַלְּצָה נַפְשִׁי
Return Adonoy, free my soul,
הוֹשִׁיעֵֽנִי לְמַֽעַן חַסְדֶּֽךָ:
deliver me for the sake of Your lovingkindness.
כִּי אֵין בַּמָּֽוֶת זִכְרֶךָ
For in death there is no mention of You;
בִּשְׁאוֹל מִי־יוֹדֶה לָּךְ:
in the lower world who will thank You.
יָגַֽעְתִּי־בְּאַנְחָתִי
I am worn out with my sighing,
אַשְׂחֶה בְכָל־לַֽיְלָה מִטָּתִי
every night I cause my bed to float;
בְּדִמְעָתִי עַרְשִׂי אַמְסֶה:
with my tears, I melt my couch.
עָשְׁשָׁה מִכַּֽעַס עֵינִי
My eye is dimmed from anger,
עָתְקָה בְּכָל־צוֹרְרָי:
it has aged because of my tormentors.
סֽוּרוּ מִמֶּֽנִּי כָּל־פֹּֽעֲלֵי אָוֶן
Depart from me, all you evildoers,
כִּי־שָׁמַע יְהֹוָה קוֹל בִּכְיִי:
for Adonoy has heard the voice of my weeping.
שָׁמַע יְהֹוָה תְּחִנָּתִי
Adonoy has heard my supplication,
יְהֹוָה תְּפִלָּתִי יִקָּח:
Adonoy will (also) accept my prayer.
יֵבֽשׁוּ וְיִבָּהֲלוּ מְאֹד
Ashamed and utterly terrified
כָּל־אֹיְבָי
will all my foes be,
יָשֻֽׁבוּ
they will return
יֵבֽשׁוּ רָֽגַע:
and be instantaneously ashamed.
