אמר [המחבר] החכם אין רש יותר ממי שאינו שמח בחלקו. ולא תשבע עינו:
562. THE sage observes: None is so poor, as he who is discontented with his lot.

אמר אין רש כמי שלבו דואג מן הרש:
563. None is more indigent than he who dreads poverty.

ואמר הקבר ולא הרש:
564. Better the grave than a fall to poverty.

ושאלו לחכם האיך ענינך? אמר מה יהיה ענין מי שאבד ממונו ונשאר מנהגו:
565. The sage having been asked how he fared in life, he replied, How can one fare, who has lost his wealth but retained his luxurious habits?

ואמר תן למי שתרצה תהיה נגידו. והתיאש ממי שתרצה תהיה כמוהו. וכבד מי שתרצה תהיה מכובד ממנו. ותצטרך למי שתרצה תהיה נקל בעיניו:
566. Liberality to another renders thee his superior; independence his equal; respect shown will be reciprocated, and favours solicited will cause thee to be slighted.

ואמר כשימעט הון האדם אין בניו רוצים את דעתו. ומשיבין על דבריו ועל מצותיו:
567. With the decrease of our wealth our opinions lose their weight, even with our children, who disobey our words and orders.
